Telemark skiing 30:00 [2]

Morning at the resort. Felt tired. Some fresh snow but it seemed like it had all blown off by the high winds.

Swim 45:00 [3] 2.0 km (22:30 / km)

500 pull/500 kick/500 warm up and down, and some hypoxia lengths. Back felt sore after - not sure why.

Tuesday Dec 30, 2008 #

Classic ski 59:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:55 / km) +210m 4:31 / km

Lunch time ski at MacPherson. Mickey Olson/Jackrabbit/Little Dippet/Roadway Ramble in both directions.

Monday Dec 29, 2008 #

Run 28:00 [2] 4.5 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Asics gt 2110 #2

Around the high school at an easy pace.

Classic ski 38:00 [4] 8.5 km (4:28 / km) +210m 3:59 / km

SKied at MecPherson over lunchtime. Lower Main Loop/Log Roller/Novice Glide/BCIT. Those were the only groomed trails but great conditions.

Sunday Dec 28, 2008 #

Telemark skiing 45:00 [3]

Morning at the resort again with Mike, VJ and Kevin. Some fresh snow but not as much as yesterday. Very crowded today but still had some great turns. The hard stuff underneath is getting buried. Impaled my thigh with my pole on one crash - luckily my leg took a glanciing blow but my shell pants didn't fare as well.

Saturday Dec 27, 2008 #

Run 25:00 [2] 4.5 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Asics gt 2110 #2

Around the neighborhood with Logan. Tried to follow where the snow plow had been.

Telemark skiing 1:00:00 [3] +130m

At the resort with Mike and VJ until 1. Finally some new snow so conditions were nice. Boot top powder in the morning although you could feel the hard stuff underneath. Felt a bit off on my last few runs - maybe a bit tired from being up most of the night at work. One hike up to the summit.

Friday Dec 26, 2008 #

Classic ski 1:00:00 [2] 9.0 km (6:40 / km) +230m 5:55 / km

With Courtney, Sara and Kevin at MacPherson. Relaxed loop up Beaver Lake and back on Log Roller and Main loop. Back is still feeling it a bit when double poling.

Thursday Dec 25, 2008 #

Run 28:00 [2] 4.5 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Asics gt 2110 #2

Xmas morning run. Hard to run fast while trying to sing xmas carols (not that I ever remember the words). Not quite the same when it is just me and Courtney. We haven't had family around for xmas for three years for various reasons.

Wednesday Dec 24, 2008 #

Run 20:00 [2] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Asics gt 2110 #2

Out on the greenbelt again but this time with Courtney.

Swim 35:00 [3] 1.5 km (23:20 / km)

Short session at the pool. Didn't realize that the pool didn't open until 8 am today so had limited time. 500m time trail in 9:07.

Classic ski 45:00 [3] 8.5 km (5:18 / km) +220m 4:41 / km

Afternoon ski at MacPherson. BCIT, Novice Glide, Cedar Ramble, then lower part of Main loop. A bit of fresh snow so slower conditions. Forgot my clear lenses too so couldn't see going downhill.

Tuesday Dec 23, 2008 #

Run 20:00 [2] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Asics gt 2110 #2

Just testing the back out. Felt pretty mechanical out there but no pain.

Sunday Dec 21, 2008 #

XC touring 30:00 [1] 3.5 km (8:34 / km)

Short xc ski with Courtney and the dog along the river flats. Unfortunately our dog seems to have developed a hind leg injury. He's fine during the activity but then favours the leg later after he's been laying around for a bit. Forced rest hasn't seemed to have cured it as it happened again this evening.

Backcountry skiing 3:00:00 [2] +900m

Much colder today (-24) so the decision to climb into the sunnier slopes around Jasmin was a good one. Being in the sun made a huge difference. Found a nice slope to lap. very slow snow but fun turns.

Friday Dec 19, 2008 #

Backcountry skiing 3:00:00 [2] +900m

Climbed up into Ruby Basin and did a couple different runs in the basin. The alpine had been wind hammered but the snow was better in sheltered areas. Very cold as we spent most of the day in the shade.

Thursday Dec 18, 2008 #

Backcountry skiing 1:30:00 [2] +450m

Start of a short backcountry ski trip to Valhalla Mountain Touring near Nakusp. I invited alot of people who'd never been backcountry skiing before to try and introduce them to joys of touring for turns. Unfortunately the weather was frigid and the terrain was a bit disapointing (short runs). In the end though everyone had a great time, no one got frostbite, and some powder turns were enjoyed by all.

Today we went for a short shakedown tour up into the Emerald Forest.

Note

Threw my back out bending over. One moment I am fine and the next moment I couldn't get up off the floor. I hate injuring myself like that. Seems to have settled pretty quickly as i write this a few days later but still not 100%. My treatment regime involved daily ski therapy:)

Tuesday Dec 16, 2008 #

Swim 45:00 [3] 2.0 km (22:30 / km)

Master's swim. L should started bothering me again about 2/3rds in so I didn't finish the whole workout.

Monday Dec 15, 2008 #

Strength 25:00 [3]

Strendurance B. Felt really hard this morning. Maybe it was because I hadn't eaten breakfast. L shoulder still feels a bit sore.

Classic ski 48:00 [3] 9.5 km (5:03 / km)

A loop on BCIT and Easy Al's (24:30), then on Mickey Olson. Conditions were faster than I expected considering how cold it was. The biggest thing slowing me down was the needles on the trail from the wind. It seemed like I'd forgotten how to ski at first but things seemed to improve pretty quickly.

Sunday Dec 14, 2008 #

Run 27:00 [3] 5.5 km (4:55 / km)
shoes: Asics gt 2110 #2

Out and about in town. Frigid wind.

Saturday Dec 13, 2008 #

Downhill Skiing 45:00 [1] +130m

Made it to the hill early enough to have a couple runs with fresh tracks and then kept running into people I knew which slowed things down a bit. Frigid wind up top - very Alberta like. One hike up to the summit. Stayed until lunchtime.

Friday Dec 12, 2008 #

Telemark skiing 45:00 [2] +130m

A good part of the day at the hill with Courtney, Tara and Kevin. Hiked up once to the summit and dropped into South Bowl. A bit of fresh snow overnight and a little wind freshened up the conditions. Tele legs are getting into shape.

XC touring 30:00 [2] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

Out to the greenbelt and the flats with the dog. Snow was sticking to my skis today so stuck to the beaten down path.

Thursday Dec 11, 2008 #

Swim 45:00 [4] 1.8 km (25:00 / km)

Masters swim. Lots of IM intervals at high intensity. Left shoulder is a bit sore. Had some fun practising dives afterwards.

Wednesday Dec 10, 2008 #

Telemark skiing 1:00:00 [3] +300m

Was not that motivated after being woken up a couple times in the middle of the night on call. Glad I got out though as I had a couple nice runs down south bowl. Powder up top and then tracked powder lower down. A couple bootpacks up to critical summit and a skate across the mountain to get back to the quad to get the heart going .

Tuesday Dec 9, 2008 #

Strength 25:00 [3]

Strendurance B. Faster paced than A which was nice.

Monday Dec 8, 2008 #

Backcountry skiing 3:30:00 [3] +1600m

McGill shoulder with Jordy and Brendan. Conditions were deep - too deep really. 65 cm of new snow over the weekend and 40-50cm of foot penetrations while trail breaking. Luckily others had broken trail the day before. Up the ridge then an extra lap. Fun day.

Sunday Dec 7, 2008 #

Telemark skiing 20:00 [1]

Morning at the hill with Courtney. Winter finally arrived and we got a nice dump of snow over the weekend. Decent tracked powder conditions.

XC touring 40:00 [2]

At MacPherson on the metal edged touring skis. Climbed up the old skid road towards the fingers. Turns out the club groomed today for the first time - we could have brought our regular skis.

Friday Dec 5, 2008 #

Swim 45:00 [3] 2.0 km (22:30 / km)

AM swim with Courtney. 4 x 500 of combo kick/pull/swim.

Thursday Dec 4, 2008 #

Strength 25:00 [2]

Strendurance A.

Wednesday Dec 3, 2008 #

Bike 45:00 [3] +240m

Cold and clear day. The ground was quite frozen but only had to deal with snow on the doubletrack up to the ski jump parking lot. Rode the highway singletrack and then the CPR trails.

Tuesday Dec 2, 2008 #

Bike (Road) 1:05:00 [3] 32.0 km (29.5 kph)

Out and back on Airport Way. Sunny day and I managed to stay pretty warm. Nice headwind on the ay back but disapointingly it didn't seem to help me much on the way out.

Strength 25:00 [2]

Strendurance A. Pushups are easier already.

Monday Dec 1, 2008 #

Hike 50:00 [2] +315m

Hike up to the 1st road crossing on the Summit trail with Courtney. Some snow on the trail, especially in the open spots.

Basketball 1:00:00 [3]

Not the most competitive game but decent. Good to get out and play again.
