Leadership Trail and back on lunch break.

Sunday Apr 26, 2009 #

orienteering race 2:54:38 [4] 9.8 km (17:49 / km)

Blue course at Pine Hill. Pleased to have stayed under three hours. (barely). A few stupid errors, heat, very tough to read map and a couple of nasty falls really slowed me down. Saw and got ripped up by tons of green barbed wire.

Saturday Apr 25, 2009 #

orienteering race 59:20 [4] 4.3 km (13:48 / km)

First Blue course at Pine Hill. Found the trail network impossible to understand in places.

orienteering race 1:28:55 [4] 5.8 km (15:20 / km)

Blue final. Chase start. Heat got to me mentally and physically. Only part I enjoyed was the sprint in the chute with PG.

Thursday Apr 23, 2009 #

hiking 58:30 [2]

To the end of Hannah Lane and back with side trip to check out marsh marigolds in the swamp near Broadway.

Wednesday Apr 22, 2009 #

hiking 32:00 [2]

Cricket field and back on lunch break.

Monday Apr 20, 2009 #

hiking 40:00 [2]

To Leadership Trail and back on lunch break.

Sunday Apr 19, 2009 #

orienteering race 2:33:02 [4] *** 10.4 km (14:43 / km)

Blue course on the new Lake Popolopen map at West Point. Goal was to finish in less than 3 hours. Accurate but slow for the most part. Ran right by 13 to beyond 14 and then back tracked to find 14 first. Enjoyed seeing several other much faster and younger runners make errors. Even saw one run right off the map. Of course, they can make mistakes, relocate and still beat me to the control. Liberal dosage of ibuprofen made the glute pain bearable and even allowed me to run some. Plenty stiff this morning.

Thursday Apr 16, 2009 #

hiking 32:00 [1]

Walk to Wilson's and back on lunch break.

road run 30:40 [3]

Feeble attempt. Glute very bad the whole way.

Wednesday Apr 15, 2009 #

hiking 31:00 [2]

Soldier's Field and back on lunch break.

Monday Apr 13, 2009 #

hiking 39:00 [2]

To Leadership Trail and short hike to vernal pool on lunch break. Brought at least one tiny tick back to the office with me where he/she perished.

Sunday Apr 12, 2009 #

hiking 1:21:14 [2]

To end of Hannah Lane then into the Liberty Croft open space to check some boundary markers and take a few photos of springs beginnings.

Saturday Apr 11, 2009 #

orienteering 3:04:35 [3] 13.4 km (13:46 / km)

Score O at Tarrywile in the rain. Glute held up pretty well. Had a couple of very sharp pains when I slipped on wet rocks and fell, but it passed quickly. Started off with Rick but we parted ways when I made a bad route choice - then leap frogged a few controls with Adam. Got really tired on the uphills on the west side of the course and wasn't moving fast enough to stay warm.

Friday Apr 10, 2009 #

hiking 1:59:11 [2] 5.6 mi (21:17 / mi)

At Nathan Hale SF mostly on trails but some rock hopping in terrain testing the glute. Painful but bearable.

Thursday Apr 9, 2009 #

hiking 52:30 [2]

To the end of Hannah Lane and back. Muscle pull still very sore. Tried a short jog and found it more comfortable than walking.

Sunday Apr 5, 2009 #

Note
(injured)

Glute pull seems to be much worse than I had hoped. I knew getting out of bed that the trail run was out of the question, but thought I could go to Paugusset for a walk in the woods. I drove about 5 miles before the pain of sitting became intolerable. Could barely walk when I got back home. Spent the day reading while flat on my back or standing to do some easy chores. Took one brief walk on uneven ground and had to be really careful not to put the very irritated muscle into spasm. Ice and ibuprophen and rest and hope for the best.

Saturday Apr 4, 2009 #

hiking 1:59:00 [2] 5.8 mi (20:31 / mi)

Hockanum Linear Trail from Golf Land in Vernon south to North Main St. in Manchester and back. Several paddlers practicing for tomorrow's race. Canoes having a lot of trouble with the rapids under the Oakland St. bridge. Every year I think about doing this race and then go orienteering instead. Hope to run the Bimbler's Bash 10k trail race tomorrow morning in Guilford and then drive up to Paugussett for Peter's meet. Had a little accident while chasing a rolling soda can in the parking lot at BigY and pulled a muscle. Really sore now. Will see if rest and Ibuprophen do the job overnight.

Registered for Blue at West Point on Sunday. 11+k and 23 controls. Should be a challenge to finish under 3 hours.
