US Masters champs, Day 2, Hueston Woods East, OCIN

Ready to try to be steady and consistent for another day. It was weird going out in first place but I did a good job of forgetting about the time and concentrating on being clean.

Right away I had some minor issues, when I got within 10m of C1 and couldn't see the marker. Thought it was on the bridge, instead of a reentrant. Doh! This happened again on C5, when I thought the marker would be in the deeper part of the reentrant, and I walked right past the marker.

Most of the course was straight forward and I did OK with the navigation, a few minor bobbles with quick corrections. I just couldn't push the pace as fast as Saturday and I was slowing down as the race progressed. I need to increase fitness to be able to handle two races in a row.

Had a hard time deciding on the route from 10-11. Considered going back through the start, but glad I didn't. For the finish: I had scoped out the finish chute before I started, and decided to give it my all. It was nice to get some cheers from my friends as I sprinted to the finish.

I had a late start, so I was able to compare times with others as soon as I finished and figure out that I had held onto the win. Gold in F60 was an incredible surprise! I had trained to be able to have two clean races, so I was really pleased with that result. I had no expectation of a medal.

Nice job by OCIN, as usual. Enjoyed the finish location and being able to hang out and chat with everyone. Boris and Inara joined us in our Airbnb. Went for lunch with Peggy, Nadim and Samantha. Then good Mexican food delivered in fir dinner. Relaxing and getting ready for eclipse day tomorrow.

US Masters champs, Day 1, Hueston Woods North, OCIN
consecutive champs #34

I felt prepared and excited for today's run. I was not thrilled that Peggy was starting only 2 minutes behind me but I figured she'd pass me pretty quickly and be gone.

I was happy when I turned over the map and saw the relatively long 1st leg. Cool! We don't get those very often. I decided to take the trails in the beginning, but then run through the woods and ignore the trails at the end of the leg. I figured I just had to get to the stream. Peggy passed me, as I expected. She was running smoothly through the woods while I was walking and being careful. I got near the stream and saw an earth bank, so I started looking around. But I hadn't gone far enough and was 90 degrees off. People who stayed on the trails had a nice attackpoint. Lost 1.5 minutes here.

Clean to 2, where I was surprised to see Peggy leaving as I was approaching. I saw which direction she left and automatically went the same way. Took me far too long to figure out which trail I was on (I thought I was on the western trail but I was on the eastern.) Lost about 30 seconds here.

Rest of the course was pretty clean, only minor bobbles and hesitations. I think I had an advantage bobbing through the thick vegetation, both because I'm short, and this is the same stuff we have at home. In fact, I was thinking how grateful I was that we had two races at Cedar Niles park this winter, since it also has a maze of bike trails and thick vegetation. Turned out to be perfect practice!

I felt that I had done OK physically, was happy with the navigation. Was quite surprised to see that my time held up and I'm currently 1st in F60. That was unexpected!

Nice time hanging out and talking with everyone. Then dinner at our Airbnb with Tom C and Jason Plunkett (PTOCer who lives in IA).

Lots of playing time today. I usually stay at least an hour, but only log 30 minutes because there is often down time. Not today. Plus one game was a back-and-forth seesaw that took forever to end.
