Mt Toby 50k in Sunderland, Mass. I chose this race back in December as a fun early season challenge, and then doubled down on doing it after I tore my calf the first weekend in February. Initially Brent and I were going to do it together, but he's been dealing with some injuries, and then a friend who was also going to take part dropped down to the 24k and then also pulled the plug for injuries. They were smarter than I was.
It was a beautiful area - lots of elevation and almost all technical trail. I felt strong for the first 10 miles, and then started to falter after the second (of three) trip up and over Mt. Toby. The last 21(.69) was mostly a battle of wills and quads. There was a fair bit more route finding than I was anticipating, and I got turned around or lost the flagging more than a handful of times. Something I didn't know about ultrarunning!
Brent and the kids surprised me at an aid station at mile 19 with treats and hugs, and then at each subsequent spot they could access - definitely a boost. Z ran with me for a couple short stretches in and out of the aid stations and then for the last half mile to the finish. A sweet pacer.
As I said to Jen after the race, just convince me that this was a product of the torn calf and low grade stomach bug the last two weeks, and not a reflection of how the rest of the season will go, and let’s move on? :)
