miscellaneous 20:00 [2]

Planting a tree. Passed Farbach-Werner Preserve while doing errands (including the horrible task of looking at refrigerators, selecting one, and arranging delivery), and I could not resist the leftovers from the native tree sale. Ran out of daylight. 3 more to put in the ground tomorrow.

About 2.5 miles with Jennifer, then I made my way through Craig's maze (a bunch of winding little grouse hunting trails, aka "twisty little passages all alike") toward Papoose Lake.

Monday Sep 17, 2018 #

trail running 1:38:47 [3] 8.56 mi (11:32 / mi)

about 2 miles of it with Jennifer. Time includes a minute or so getting started, and another minute or two of walking after Jennifer had a mild ankle roll on a rock.

Found wolf scat on one of the trails. Possibly coyote, but they were quite large and almost all deer fur.

5 Sandhill cranes.

Near the end of the run, I came out of the woods onto the gravel road by the airstrip. As I rounded a bend, Tyler and Laura came into view, coming toward me on mountain bikes, with 4 rescue dogs from Laura's shelter running alongside. Well, Tyler and Laura jumped off the bikes and hurried to corral the dogs before they got too excited and decided to follow me instead. At this point, I was about 20 yards away, and the two larger dogs were halfway on their way to see me... And at that moment, two huge corn-fed deer burst from the cornfield, passed in front of me, and just in front of the two startled dogs, and bolted for the woods. Chaos ensued, as the two larger dogs took off after the deer. One quickly realized he was outmatched and decided to come see me, and I quickly got him by the collar. The other finally gave up the chase and returned to Laura. Enough excitement for one run.

trail running 1:01:36 [3] 5.28 mi (11:40 / mi)
shoes: AW white

Saw at least 6 sandhill cranes at the airstrip. Could have been more hiding amongst the flocks of geese.

walking 12:00 [1] 0.6 mi (20:00 / mi)

Late night walk - there had been forecast of likely aurora borealis, but nothing during the 45 minutes or so that I stayed out. Apparently a few people who stayed out later got a good show. :-(
