Volunteering at adventure camp. Helped "lead" a group during the morning practice course on the north side of Palisades. Since we had several groups who were comfortable going off on their own and plenty of volunteers, I ended up with a group of one, who's already an experienced adventure racer. So we had a nice job hiking around the park and doing an "I Spy" version of orienteering since we had no passport to punch. We were only about 4 controls short of clearing the course and got in no hurry whatsoever.
After the practice session ended, Chuck and I divided the 20 points and each cleared half of the course. I only made one error, where I drastically misidentified the reentrant I was looking for (way undershot it, probably partly because I tried running on the trail and can't yet navigate above a slow walk). Even that ended up ok, because as I emerged at the bottom to reattack I happened to look up and spot the next control I had to find.
I typically look for ease of travel routes, but about halfway through clearing I got tired and just took the redline from point to point. The climbing wasn't as bad as I typically expect (and thus avoid) it would be, so that was a good lesson.
Really comfortable with the map. I'm sure it helps that I've probably spent more time orienteering in Palisades than anywhere else, and between the dramatic topography and the winter clear it's pretty easy to find your way.
