XC skiing (classic) 1:00:00 [2]

Demo'ing a couple of pairs of skis in our search for waxless skis to buy.

Fischer Superlight Crown. Rated for about 60-75 kg. insane grip, you could walk up hills with no technicque (these skis may even cause you to lose your technique if you skied them too often), but the glide was slow, so much so that they weren't enjoyable. I wonder what an even stiffer pair might be like? But I think these turned me off of crown skis.

Salomon Equipe RC Skin (196 cm, rated 60-75 kg, MF 38, ??W 1.49, FBW 0.27). Really nice glide, they feel more like a wax ski, but the grip would let go on the steeper stuff, even just trying to climb the first hill out of the stadium. It would be interesting to try a softer pair and see how much glide they give up. Unfortunately they don't have a demo in this size.
Definitely interested in exploring the skin skis more to see if there is one that has enough grip for the climbs.

XC skiing (skate) 30:00 [2] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

Headed out for a quick bit of exercise after feeling like the ski testing wasn't really a workout. Met up with our friend Maz and headed out with her. Tried towing her Chariot up one hill. Didn't enjoy how it pushes at its own rhythm. Caught up with our friend Roy and visited a little. Then tried skiing on my own a little in order to set a better pace.

Nice sun, beautiful mountain views up at the meadow.

XC skiing (skate) 1:15:00 [2] 8.0 km (9:23 / km)

To the Nordic Centre with Carbon, Violet, Slice, Emily and Ruchel. Three new skate skiers that picked it up well and were cruising in no time. Slice was a champ, hanging back with one girl who needed more coaching. I couldn't help much because I know just enough to do it, but not enough to teach it. I dropped back several times to keep them company. Not a big workout today but still nice to be out. Conditions were great.

Running (Hill repeats) 1:04:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (24:00 @4) 10.0 km (6:24 / km)
shoes: IceBug

Hill repeats on Spray Lakes Road (most of the trails are buried in deep snow right now :))

10+ min warm up running from CNC parking lot to the gate on Spray Lakes Road

8 x (3min up, hard; 2 min down, recovery)

10 min run back to the cars.

Then had to jam right after to get to our jam session. We added our two guitars to the mix of guitars, ukelele, banjo, stand-up bass, mandolin and a huge keyboard that didn't get used. Several really good songs.

Strength (ski conditioning and core) 45:00 [3]

Much like the first ski conditioning class a couple of years ago (lunges, squats, deadlifts, hopping on and off bosu, butt raises, planks) plus the cat vomits.

(butt has been sore for days afterward, as is usually the case after a couple of these exercises. I'll take that as a good sign of he workout.)

Biking (spin class) 2:00:00 [3] 45.24 km (2:39 / km)

warm up

10 x 30s MAP, 30s easy
no rest after the last MAP, straight into the next set
4 x [ 4 min E3, 1 min MAP ]

5 min easy

4 x [ 4 min E3, 1 min MAP ]

5 min easy

10 min E3-E4 cusp, adding or subtracting a gear each minute to vary the cadence
2 x [ 4 min E3-E4 cusp, 1 min MAP ]

5 min easy

5 min E4

6 min cool down spin

Did most of this in a heavier gear than usual, lower cadence, trying to work more on leg strength.

Average watts 147W

Was feeling some flu-like symptoms before the class because of getting my flu shot today. When a guy in the locker room asked how I was doing, I explained that I wasn't feeling too great. When I asked how he was doing, he replied in a thick Latin American accent: "Our lives are so good, we are so lucky, that every morning when I wake up I think it is the best day and I live it for the best because you never know. You'll probably feel better after ten minutes of exercise, that's how these things usually go."
He was right,... on a lot of things.
Had a good workout, felt like I could have gone harder even though I was holding good watts. I need to do a test to get my zones dialed in so that I can push with confidence that I am pushing the right level.
