It's official, I'm getting pinned... Surgery next week. Apparently that little bone and fingernail area is quite tricky.

Broken fingers aren't trivial. I broke the ring finger of my right hand when I fell while running off road in the winter about 20 years ago, and the treatment (getting it aligned right) and recovery were tougher than when I had previously broken a bone in my forearm near my wrist.

It wasn't like it was a terrible ordeal, so I don't want to scare you! Just that a lot of people when they hear "broken finger" think must be pretty minor and insignificant, but it isn't.

Who knew?-)

It's the very end of my right pinky, so nothing "depends" on it. On the other hand, apparently tendons get anchored there, so without the bone pushing them out, they want to contract and pull in the end of the finger. I believe that's what the pin is there for - to hold it out while the bone heals.

(though my line remains - if you had to pick any bone in the body to break, it's got to be one of the least significant...)

Good luck. One of my colleagues who is always flipping over his handlebars and breaking something, liked to show off the pin coming out of the end of his finger. He actually thought it was pretty cool.
