The website and registration for the Birkhead Wilderness Classic Orienteering Championship is now up and running. The link to the website is http://backwoodsok.org/classic2012. There is a link to the registration on the website.

We have a new map in the beautiful Birkhead Wilderness which is part of the Uwharrie Forest. The Birkhead Wilderness Area is rolling ridge and valley with a mature deciduous forest. The maximum rise is 75m. The woods are mostly open and runnable with small rock features throughout the map. There are small streams and very few trails. We will flag temporary trails for White and Yellow.

Early registration ends January 15, 2012. We hope to see you all in North Carolina in March.

I notice transportation planning is often an issue for the APers trying to decided whether to attend an event or not. This area near Asheboro (not Asheville) NC is ideally situated for fly-in fly-out at what seem to be great prices. Greensboro NC is the closest airport and it has frequent flights connecting through Atlanta GA and Charlotte NC. However you can probably find direct flights to Charlotte or Raleigh NC from your area. Each are a little over an hour drive from Asheboro.
Cheap? I will be in SW Florida at the time and Expedia tells me I can get a return flight through Atlanta from Sarasota to Greensboro for around $250, including fees. In that period I would probably spend more than that in green fees on the Florida golf courses if I didn't go to the Birkhead meet.

and the Birkhead meet is so close to Pinehurst and many other great courses! So you can get your golf fix too.

Ironically, my wife and I did spend the last two months of March (2010, 2011) in Pinehurst. We did play a lot of golf and I also did a bit of orienteering at BOK and COC events. Particularly on my way to events in the Charlotte area I would drive by the tip of Uhwarie National Forest. I'd always salivate at how nice the forest and terrain looked for orienteeering. So it comes to be that we have taken our holiday to a different location and a national championship comes to what would have been our back yard.
Thankfully it seems the competition to serve this market between US Airways, Delta, United and American is making flights to NC very reasonably priced - at least on one reseller's website.

Is anyone driving from Charlotte? There are a couple of people flying in from the west coast who are looking for a ride. Please contact me by email since I don't get on AP often. Ruth at treklite.com

Caroline and Kent Ringo have moved to near New Bern, NC and are looking for help getting to the meet, if possible. They are beyond competing but would like to see old O friends. Again, please let me know via email. Ruth at treklite.com
