Enjoy! I know that feeling of that kind of acquisition and relish it, but its even better over time, that is actually using the bike, over and over again! ps hope yer rib feels bettter soon
Several reasons. Primarily maintenance. When you ride in, it's not easy to clean the bike up. With a single speed, you really don't have to. Just wipe the chain off and everything else can wait. Disc brakes are nice for the same reason: they clean themselves (when was the last time you wiped off the rotors on your car?)
Secondary benefits are that with the derailluers and shifters gone, the bike is lighter, cheaper, and it forces you to ride at many different cadences, which is better training provided the gear is low enough that you're never grinding too much. Of course, this last benefit can be had on any bike simply by not touching the shift levers. Any time you see "in the 60" in my log, it means I did the whole ride in the 60" gear.
.....Plus they look way cool....something about the purity in simplicity.
And it arrived today! I'm picking it up tomorrow.
