Is the deal that it stops displaying after the first return to the hash house/finish? That's unfortunate. I was looking forward to witnessing Max (multiple U.S. trailrunning champion in marathon and similar) and Paddy crush the field, but they like half the teams chose to visit the HH, which is entirely sensible on this course.
Jul 30, 2023 6:38 PM #
sherpes:
is that why I saw so many teams "finish" after just 12 hours?
Jul 30, 2023 10:26 PM #

Awards were scheduled for 1 pm at the event site so I guess the winners are known. Are there official SI results somewhere?
Jul 30, 2023 11:15 PM #

Not that I am aware of! I didn’t stay for awards, but let me ask Jens.

Hope you had a great time, W4J! The scenery looked amazing.

It was gorgeous; from the model course since I forgot to get some sort of point and shoot.

There were multiple issues with the results. Nothing as bad as South Dakota 2014, but to quote a classic, we never had this happen yet here it comes again.

Fortunately this time there were backups on top of backups, so the winners and medalists in all categories were announced, although not posted, and only about one hour later than the schedule. One checkpoint was taken by a human, apparently a short time before the event, and one was eaten, apparently by a bear. The eaten one still had a working SPORTident. The other one was gone completely. There was some procedure announced before the winners were announced for claiming the 80-point credit for the CP that was missing. Written statements were collected from those who were claiming credit or so I heard.

The results set from which we announced the top 3 teams obviously didn't include the 80 points, but in almost all cases (but not all) more than 80 points separated the place-getters. I have most of them in my memory, but sadly my phone overheated during the ceremony and I couldn't take a photo of the handwritten pages from which we announced the winners. Short summary: The Estonians did really, really, really well, although there was a notable shortage of both oxygen and swamps.

Nobody came close to clearing.

Thanks - and wow! A bunch of people were curious about our Dontgetlost teams - Wilderness Traverse and GHOing Steady - but it sounds like we'll need to wait a bit. From the tracker, it looks like GHOing Steady may have won the silver medal in Mixed Ultra Veteran. Wilderness Traverse's tracker wasn't added to the map but based on their points, they might have the bronze in Mixed Veteran. They left before the awards so they hadn't heard anything when I texted with them.
Jul 31, 2023 4:23 AM #
Tundra/Desert:
Yes, GHOing Steady got 2nd MUV. Third in XV was SASS with about 2730 points. There were a number of teams misclassified in either the GPS tracking listing, the epunch printouts, or both. We went with the best available information during the awards.
Jul 31, 2023 4:32 AM #
Bash:
Hmm, Wilderness Traverse had 3170 pts. I think XV is 40-54? They are both in their 40s. Their tracker didn't appear on the map so there may have been some issue with registering the day before the event.
Jul 31, 2023 4:33 AM #
Bash:
Thanks for the update on GHOing Steady!

Wait, there was some procedure announced at the awards for getting credit for the missing control? We reported it at the finish (where they were not noting which teams visited it) and were told they were going to check the trackers for everyone.
Jul 31, 2023 5:13 AM #
origamiguy:
They asked people to report which control they had visited prior to the missing one to help figure out where to insert it in the sequence.
Jul 31, 2023 12:29 PM #
Work4justice:
WT got 40xx points. Also, I was confused about the rule for not using certain bike trails during the day? Said it on the map, and saw quite a few folks using them. Wondered if I missed an announcement or something.
Jul 31, 2023 1:32 PM #
Bash:
Bob said 3170 pts for WT but they have no idea of their ranking. How was your race?
Jul 31, 2023 1:37 PM #
arthurd:
origamiguy - So was that just something to help with doing awards in a timely manner, and they’ll still check trackers for everyone for the final results? We didn’t stay for awards (definitely not in contention!) but still want credit for that one!
Jul 31, 2023 1:56 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
My best guess is that the team in question was not input in its proper age/gender category during the late registration, so it didn't appear in this proper category in the results set based on which awards were given. Other mistakes are also possible. This is just a guess and my suggestion is to contact the organizers.

Thanks, T/D.

The rule about the downhill bike trails being off-limits when they are open to the downhill MTB crowd was in place two years ago. I remember hustling down one with my partner to get clear before the deadline (although I think the deadline was when the lift opened to bring the bikes up the mountain, so we probably had some breathing room).

I've gotta say, I'm a decent mountain biker, but riding down those trails is way beyond what I'd want to try doing.
Jul 31, 2023 4:13 PM #
tRicky:
Cross country and downhill mountain biking are two sports that are completely unrelated to each other.
Jul 31, 2023 5:40 PM #
jjcote:
Yeah, that's totally true (although the equipment looks superficially similar). My statement above is kind of like saying that although I'm a decent hang glider pilot, when it comes to wingsuit base jumping...
Jul 31, 2023 5:55 PM #
sherpes:
were some of the slopes going downhill off-limit at some time during the 24 hour rgaine?
Jul 31, 2023 7:04 PM #
allstar:
The map said they were forbidden, but the meet notes said for the mtb trails:
“They are represented on the map with purple dashed lines (normal footpath symbol with purple color). It is strictly forbidden to follow these trails from 10:00am to 5:00pm, as high-speed downhill mountain bikes are descending, and competitors could cause and be involved in serious accidents. You may cross these trails at any time but do exercise extreme caution while doing so.”

I found these results but seems like not all teams are listed? Link here: https://cal-o-fest.com/results?stage=10&displa...
Jul 31, 2023 9:21 PM #
Bash:
Oh! I saw those results this afternoon and noticed that WT is in the wrong category (XO instead of XV) but I didn't notice missing teams. I can't imagine how complicated this is for the volunteers!
Jul 31, 2023 10:20 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
"The wrong category" may not be. There's a nuance with 40-year-olds and others on the edge of age-category eligibility, e.g. 55--year-olds.

1. Some time in the recent past the IRF changed its rules to match those of the IOF, that is, the age that matters is the age on 31 December of the competition year, not the age on the day of the event.

2. The effective date of this change occurred after the originally scheduled date of these World Rogaining Championships in 2020.

3. These Championships were grandfathered in to use the age-cutoff system in effect in 2020, so as to not cause more problems with the entry and results systems than there already were. Some folks, including myself, entered this event in 2019.

4. The age listed in the linked-above results is the orienteering age (on 31 December), not the event-day age. The scoring software was (auto?)updated to its latest version, and it ran past the rules in effect.

5. The member of the team in question listed as a 40-year-old may well still be 39 as of Saturday 29 July 2023. In this case the team is correctly listed in XO.

I cannot find our team "We tried" in results (should be Open women)? We did finish.
Jul 31, 2023 10:38 PM #

Interesting about the rule change! As someone whose birthday falls in the summer, that has sometimes made a difference for me, so I'm glad to hear it.

In this case though, both members of Team WT were 40+ on the day of the event. They have written the registration email ID to get their category fixed. They weren't sure if there might be a more appropriate contact.
Jul 31, 2023 10:38 PM #
edwarddes:
What eventreg shows for category is probably correct.

Part of the work I did for NAOC/WRC before OUSA fired me was to implement a rogaine classe type with the different age cutoff for class calculations.
If IRF now matches IOF for the date of age calculation, that change should probably be reverted, but that most likely never will get done now.
Jul 31, 2023 10:41 PM #
Bash:
I'm guessing that people who registered onsite the day before the rogaine didn't go through Eventreg but that's good to know.
Aug 1, 2023 12:15 AM #
zsibthorp:
Re wrong category: as someone present at the award ceremony, something I learned is that in rogaining you are in every category that you are eligible to be in. Thus, if someone is eligible in an older veteran category, they are also in all of the ones below their age, such as the open category. Additionally, some people and teams were misrepresented due to various complications of inputting teams that only got figured out just before the race - looks like some or all of this has been corrected. Some corrections have only just been implemented, so perhaps check in now. Another note is that a control that did +80 was missing and had to be added in manually afterwards, based on report by the competitors themselves (reliable because you could easily be caught with GPS for lying, and also not a difficult control navigation-wise) - looks like that has been added in too! Quick work by the organizers <3 Apologies if any of this is a repeat of information!

Regarding the non-disappeared, but bear-mauled checkpoint that still had a function SI-punch ... has this ever happened before at an event, that an animal destroyed a control site?
Aug 1, 2023 3:42 AM #
mikeminium:
@ backstreet: We had a control that had the control flag attacked and shredded by a coyote, but the stand was still upright and the epunch unaffected. There had been a light snowfall, and the coyote’s tracks were quite evident. At another event, a stand was knocked over by a deer (again plenty of tracks for evidence), but a vetter discovered that one and righted it before any competitors arrived.

Most bizarre control vandalism by unknown perpetrator...

Flag with its wire frame completely removed, but otherwise not damaged.
Aug 1, 2023 4:16 AM #
arthurd:
In addition to the missing control and the missing-flag control, we also found a shredded flag on the ground near one control (which had a flag, epunch, and reflector).

There are still teams missing from the posted results.

Hi All
I am the President of the IRF. I have requested all relevant data (tundra you may not be aware of that yet) and the IRF will be auditing and finalizing the results.

Tundra - may I politely ask you not to respond to queries here while we resolve the issues

If anyone has queries please send to me directly. I think my email is visible. If not, ask.

1991, Townsend State Forest, one control was very shredded by some animal, but we weren't able to figure out what. Bear? Dog? Fisher? Porcupine?

2019, Gunstock, one backup pin punch was thoroughly chewed on, presumably by a porcupine. Another location had the control stand smashed, and the only animal in that area that we could think of that would have been capable of doing that was a black bear. (Maybe a moose? But the circumstances didn't seem right for that.)

(Those were all caught by vetters the morning of the event.)
Aug 1, 2023 9:38 AM #

That's dedication, going out to catch a black bear so it didn't further interfere with the event.

Thanks Tundra
Having no luck getting data sent to me/irf for review audit and finalizing.

My apologies to all participants. We genuinly wish to have the data so that we/irf can award and recognize everyone. I made a comment at closing that I was pleased to see such great results from US teams. Bend Racing in particular but also the to the men's youth team. While they were the only entries, they entered, they raced and they will now always be a world champion. And no one can take that away.

4 years ago I stood by the importance of North American Rogaining to the IRF and I stand by that now.

@HidingControls, will there be an overall rank list also? Sorry you all are having trouble!
Aug 2, 2023 1:51 PM #
HidingControls:
Yes there will be an overall. There should have been an overall announced at the prize giving. This year that was the same podium as the Men's Open but that is not always the case and mixed teams have finished in the top three. At regional and national championship women's teams have finished in the top 3 as well.

Timmo Tammamae and Sander Linus (spelling sorry) from Estonia were overall winners and I privately handed them their trophy and apologized.

A note on age groups and rules from above.

Age and definition of grades change at the beginning of 2024 they were never considered for this event as entries were already open.

Age is now defined as the age at the end of the year the same as orienteering. The reasoning for that so that you compete in the same grade all year rather than depend on when the event is.

Youth has been adjusted to 23 and under
Reasoning to grow the size of the field a little bit and in recognition that the sport requires experience and strength that comes with age.

Vets has been raised to 45
Again recognition the competitive end of the field does not tailmoff in performance until much later.

A question was asked about a 75+ category. That would need to have evidence of depth of competition

All these are only for national regional and world championship. And what best suits a local and community event should be adopted to make people feel welcome.

@GuyO - and the problem of the assigned bibs not matching the courses assigned in the computer for many of the Open teams (resulting in all three members being recorded as MP) also still has not been fixed. Last I heard they hoped to have the relay results resolved by Aug 6, but clearly not. Would be nice to know if they are still working on it...

most important question - will there be a 2024 WRC?
Aug 16, 2023 10:05 PM #
HidingControls:
No - WRCs are scheduled to be biannual, due to the thing that happened, lots of juggling has taken place since 2020.

WRC 2025 is in Spain (july/august) and bids will be asked for 2027 at the start of next year with hopefully a strong Southern Hempisphere one

That could be anywhere in Canada. But in my years of orienteering I iave only 'navigated' my way into signs of two grow ops, one fairly deep in a national park that apparently had been cultivated by the son in a former orienteering family.
