So how about a scan of the course, I have to see this map everyones talking down. How does it compare to, say, Bluff River?

Watch out for the cows! Reminds me of Wild Dog Creek...

Yea the cows totally ruined my route choice! I had to take a serious detour, because I am too scared to run through them ever since I heard Grace Elson's school champ story.

But were you wearing a red T-Shirt?

no... but they were looking at me funny!

haha yeh it was a pretty big pack of cows... I reckon from my gps trace u'll be able to see where they were!
Tough competition with Bluff River... similar to Wild Dog... is a bit better... nicer area and runnability... but when the main features on the map are 'distintive trees', root mounds and clearings, u know somethings wrong...

Thanks Pooks, it's not as bad as I thought. I actually don't have a problem with 95% of Wild Dog Creek.
My main problem with maps like that is course setter, unless they're geniuses, have to put in long boring legs just to get the longer courses long enough - one of the main reasons I shunned elites for so long (one of the reasons)

I agree Patrick, however we are lucky to have variety in our Tas Maps and the more areas mapped the better. Trust me, a bit of dolerite and sandstone looks good after staring at these granite maps we have up here after a while!

I think that orienteering has its fair share of geniuses?

Miles, you are so spoilt! I reckon any Hobart or Launnie based O-er would gladly swap dolerite for Granite!
I do agree the more maps the better - Im pretty impressed they keep finding spots down there with decent runnability

'down there'.. pfft you talk like you're not a Tasmanian anymore Patty! Yeh I'd gladly take plenty of new maps of that standard if they are good runability!
I'm already sick to death of Littlechilds with how much they have been flogging it over the past year or two... cant start to understand how sick of it you must be Miles!
Can't believe it's being used AGAIN for the NOL races down in Tassie next year... mainlanders will start thinking its the only map we have...

I'll always be tasmanian Pookie, although I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world at the moment ;)

I'm gonna take a stand and say I like Littlechilds Ck, but don't understand why they didn't redo Livelys at the same time - I really enjoyed running there at the last camp I went to.

Littlechild and Livelys in their 1988 incarnation would comfortably rank in my worldwide top 10 favourite areas to orienteer in. Not sure I'm quite so enthusiastic about them in 2007.

In 1988 the areas had burnt quite recently - not sure exactly when but I'd guess 2-3 years earlier. The creeks had narrow bands of dark green like they do now, but there was very little other green on the map, including in the marshes - most of them were yellow - and not much fallen timber. Large parts of the area had nothing on the ground at all. It had already thickened up a fair bit by 1992 - I ran 40 seconds/km slower there in 1992 than I did in 1988 when I'd probably improved at least 30 seconds/km over those 4 years (from age 16 to 20) - and it certainly wasn't any easier in 2005.

Blair, the Livelys Bog map had a fire through it in late 2004, and another small one in late 2006. It's my favourite map and there are now lovely open araes covered in blankets of orchids to trample over. So we intend to remap it for the NOL event after Easter 2009 to give you mainlainders another crack. When linked with Littlechils and Mt Pearson provides an unparalleled Tassie O experience. There is also MORE granite to the northeast near Doctors Peak that could join onto this map and a further area even more north up near Gladtone that contains lots of granite AND tin mining detail that was extensively burnt in 2006.

Yes Patty I am spoilt up here, just that as one of the 3 orienteers living in St Helens I get to course set on it much more than run on it.

Is that Gladstone area near Mt Cameron? I remember driving through there last year and saw lots of granite and mining poking out - looked awesome.
I'll defo have to back be back Easter 09 if Livelys is in the mix - the event there in March was tops
