Ski (classic) 1:45:00 [2]

GH training with Brian, Rick and Corey. Nice day.

Ski (classic) 45:00 [3]

Another loop+ after the others left. Snow was getting pretty mushy.

WE NEED SNOW!

Ski (classic) 1:12:00 [3]

At Sunfish. Some the hills are getting a bit dangerous. I took a knee on one over in the northwest corner. The bend at the bottom was so sharp, you'd need the equipment and the skills of a Vancouverite to manage it - and I have neither, even though I was edging my lead ski the whole way down.

Unfortunately, getting off the skis didn't seem to slow me down. I flew into the snowbank at the outside of the turn, bounced off like a rubber ball, and took the runout before standing back up. Fun times.

There were no signs that I could find with park hours listed on them.

Running (road) 40:37 [3] 4.72 mi (8:36 / mi) +100m 8:04 / mi

Local street/trail run in Mahtomedi with Ian. A bit cold out with clear skies, so we kept a brisk pace.

Ski (classic) 1:20:00 [3]

Explored a bunch of the trails near the chalet at Wirth, which I've never skied before. Also did the front 9 down to Hwy 55, but turned around because tracks were so icy.

Running (trail) (snow) 40:00 [3] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Met Ian and Val for snowy trail running on the north and south MTB loops.

Running (trail) 10:00 [1] 0.8 mi (12:30 / mi)

Warmup/cooldown to and from the chalet.

Ski (classic) 1:50:00 [2] 10.3 mi (10:41 / mi)

At WRSP. Stopped several times for photos. Also checked out the skating loop in the SW side with the big hills - the trail was hard and somewhat icy. Conversely, the river trails were just about perfect.

Ski (classic) 1:57:00 [3]

Long loop at Lebanon Hills, both sides of Pilot Knob. Nice that the days are getting longer, since I managed to start a half hour before sunset and ski through until after full dark. Warm, no wind, with glide improving after the sun went down.

Running (trail) (snow) 24:47 [4] 2.74 mi (9:03 / mi)

Snowshoe trail run at Wirth.

Running (trail) warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Orienteering race 1:26:00 [4] ***
spiked:22/23c

Score-O in deep snow at Tamarack, with a map exchange. I misread map B and missed a few relatively easy ones around the outside of the park.

Ski (classic) 3:10:00 [2] 16.8 mi (11:19 / mi)

Long slow ski at WRSP. Worked on pacing myself. Great day to be out.

Ski (skate) 1:25:00 [2]

Elm Creek. Took rests in between laps, and did some no-poles drills. Watched other skiers as well. It seems I have been too worried about my skis hitting each other and thus going with a too-wide stance. That not only forced me to lunge from side to side, but also caused my skis to slip sideways a lot. About halfway through I managed to bring my feet closer to the center, slow down the tempo, and indeed the gliding became easier. Finished up by going around the Northern Lights loop, where I took the opportunity to remember V2 in a couple sections.

Because of the particular things I was doing and the frequent rests, it was a very moderate workout. I had on my Icebreaker cap the whole time and it didn't even get damp.

Running (trail) warm up/down 17:00 [2] 2.0 km (8:30 / km) +20m 8:06 / km

Around Richfield Lake.

Running (trail) 39:00 [3] 6.2 km (6:17 / km) +90m 5:52 / km

"Cover the park" at Wood Lake nature trails. Our job was to cover every inch of the foot trails (but not the ski trails) - some packed, some full of fresh snow. Lots of three-way junctions forced us to run multiple times on some sections of trail. I believe I managed the minimum number of such legs, and close to the minimum distance, but the going was very hard due to the uneven snow surface.

And a (claimed) 110m climb. Pete W's Garmin recorded 349 ft, though, so perhaps I just didn't notice it.

Ski (classic) 1:10:00 [3]

Outer circuit at Lebanon Hills, finished just as it got dark. A bit windy, and some light snow foreshadowing the Big Storm tomorrow.

Hiking 20:00 [1]

Taking photos at the Loppet. Parked near 394 and Wirth and walked the edge of the trail past the aid station and over by the Quaking Bog. I'm counting a little bit of effort due to running back and forth in the snow.

Ran into these colorful characters along the way, and also saw Richard Chin (although he was too quick and I missed getting a picture of him).

Ski (skate) 1:40:00 [2]

Rented at Hyland and did a few laps around the lake, a couple around the hill, and one back to the NE in the dark on a slow, mushy surface. As the instructor predicted last night, I've already forgotten how to V2.

There were a few sections where I felt like I knew what was going on: speeding downhill, step round a corner, switch rhythm onto a slight uphill, then switch back as I reached the top. But I also seemed to tire out and get sloppy halfway around the lake, and don't want to assume it's trail conditions. Looks like I may spend time at Elm Creek - it's good for doing some short laps that allow me to rest in between. That loop also has a variety of hills and corners, not to mention excellent grooming.

Ski (skate) 1:00:00 [2]

OMG FUN! (as they say). Quite a good class this evening at Elm Creek. Learned the basics, now it's just a lot of practice, and presumably some new gear.

You wanna know what's hilarious? My "V1" up the steep hill at the end of the lighted loop.

Note

'Nuf talk. I am taking a skate ski class at Elm Creek tomorrow evening. Should I bring the (newly repaired) helmet cam, perhaps?

Ski (classic) 45:00 [3]

Parked at Jensen at did Lebanon Hills west side. Groomed today, hills were smooth and fun but I had no kick. After six years the fish scales are wearing a bit thin - it might even be time for new a pair of classic.
