Running race 7:35:00 intensity: (3:14:12 @1) + (3:29:52 @2) + (49:53 @3) + (1:03 @4) * 40.0 mi (5.3 mph) +2046m

Might Contain Nuts 40 Ultra Marathon
Talybont on Usk
Brecon Beacons

I came 7th in a field of 165!

The course was very boggy and the wind was strong on the summits and ridges. It was pretty tough. I fell over 6 times in the mud. I fell face first into a big puddle at about 17 miles, got wet and cold (windchill) but soon warmed up.

I had a 'dark patch' from Garwnant to the Gyrn (20 miles to 27 miles approx) but pulled through (just). I managed to pick off a few people too. One guy was hobbling with sciatica, another slowed down & took a wrong turning. Some (at least one) of the other racing snakes must have made some route mistakes too because they passed me but came in behind me! ;-)

Breakfast: Porridge with chia seeds & goji berries + banana
Just before start - 1 gel
During race - 9 gels. One every hour on the hour but I used the extras up in the final 2 legs as a preventative measure to avoid bonking. I also had one of Dawn's fruit cake slices which seemed to help me come out of the 'dark patch'

Clothing
Sealskin socks
Thin running tights (Salomon)
Cycling wind gilet
A little too hot in the valleys (so pulled up sleeves & opened gilet) but perfect on the summits.

Katie got 2nd female in her first ever Ultra - very impressive!
Alan Stone got 21st overall!
Keri pulled his hamstring after slipping at mile 10, hobbled to 20 miles and then managed to get a lift home. :-(. This meant that we didn't have a 'team' result because 3 of the team had to finish. Only 3 started. :-(

I fuc*ed up several times as follows:
- My stopwatch didn't start at the mass start and I didn't realise approx 8 min in (which I didn't know at the time)
- got disorientated immediately after the start and lost a minute trying to figure out which road I was on!
- ran too far out
- there wasn't a route through where I needed one at the southern end of the map which forced me to go even further away from the finish even though I had to make a beeline there
- a few cul-de-sacs caught me out!
- got back 8 mins late!

Ride home. I got soaked because I had no mudguards on the bike so I put them on when I got home. When I finished it was too late to go down to the track.
