Orienteering race (Harvester A course leg 6) 54:11 [5] ***
shoes: Inov 8s - Oroc 280s

Great race, Whitesheep brought us in in 1st place and this was held by IanW, Paulc had a strong run and brought us in 2nd to FVO 9running against Duncan Coombes), Bendover held this and austrianmike was narrowly pipped on the run-in by lakeside, but their handover was poor and gave me a 30 second lead. Just enough time to get out into the forest in front of them.

As I scarpered all i had ringing in my head were the words of the rest of the club, make it simple and don't f@~k it up, we can afford slow but we can't afford to have one of my 10 minute 'specials'.

Was pleased with routes 1 through 2, picked up the wrong path to 3 and as was playign it safe, just hammered it along to the end, relocated and came back in and hit it clean.

Then the 'special' happened, thought the path network was looking a bit complexand so planned on if I lost touch to continue in a southerly direction and relocate off fence and come back in from there. Picked up what i thought was the right path and dropepd in to find 132 in a depression (turns out this was 5m from the control and was why i found this control a further 4 times!), didn't pick up on the fact that this would be an obvious feature and take a breath ad figure out exactly where it was, so dropped off and relocate doff fence and tried to come back in, this went on for a further 10 MINUTES!!!! with me covering every possible attackpoitn in the area and still not getting it - bugger.

After that was fairly clean throughout, although a little speed lost later on due to a slight groin pull, but took the fastest time for the leg on my gaffle and only a minute down on FVO runner, unfortunately lost 3 min to Lakeside, putting us heavily into 3rd place and out of the small teams trophy.

Slightly emotional at the end as knew I'd screwed it up for us, as potentially with a cleaner run we'd have had Jev runnign down FVO for 3 minutes instead of Lakeside runner Todd Oates whom he took apart. But hey ho, happy to ahve teken 2nd and if you'd asked us att he start of the day if we'd have settled for that, we'd have taken it in a blink - much better than last years 10th and the highest position for the club for a good few years.

Well done boys
