Orienteering race 1:52:45 [3] 6.3 km (17:54 / km)
slept:7.5 weight:160.2lbs shoes: 2012 MT101 Black

Red course at Huntington. Alas, left the garmin at home, so no track. It might have been instructive. A few real clunkers, including circling #2 for quite a while before finding it tucked in a bit. Somehow managed to drop over 10 minutes there. 3-6 were ok, then was too far right and passed by he area of 7 and 8, passing 8 first, should be easy from there, but 7 was a lot further down than I had expected, so 5 or 6 lost there. Fumbled in the circle at 10, thinking it was going to be on a wall. 11-12 ok. 13, got distracted on the way and fumbled around a bit, then eventually got to the right place, walked right by it, wondering how it could not be in that reentrant. Obviously too far, so turned back and there it was. Got right in a parallel error on the way to 14. 15 was fine, a little fumble toward the end of 16. And then ok. But gee, probably half an hour total of poor navigation. Such a nice forest, excellent course from Rick and Susie. Nice to see friends after a long winter.

Map. Alas, no track to reveal my wandering, because I forgot the watch this morning.

Gym 1:00 [3]

I'd been thinking about Dennis and his trial of pullups, chinups and dips, and thought I might be ready to start up. So 4 chinups, 4 pullups, and a paltry 3 ring dips. A start.

Rowing Machine 8:12 [3] 2.0 km (4:06 / km)

Not feeling up to a long piece, but once I got on the machine thought I could at least push a bit.

2 dog loops, with my faithful companion, Miss Sassy. She was being a bit of a pill, weaving in front and stopping, that sort of thing. Cool, but most of the snow and ice gone. Only a couple of places where the icebugs were advisable, but I had them, so absolutely fine.

Hike 30:00 [3] 1.3 mi (23:05 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:160.6lbs

Dog loop, with Sassy. Snow and ice mostly gone, except for a few north facing slopes. Not feeling lively today, stopped for 4 pullups at the rings. Enough for now.
5 PM

Rowing Machine 9:38 [3] 2.0 km (4:49 / km)

Thought I would do 5, but it wasn't feeling right, so just cut it short and slow

Rowing Machine 22:53 [3] 5.0 km (4:35 / km)
slept:4.5 weight:161.2lbs

Same time, but very different from yesterday. Yesterday I was rowing quite a bit faster and smoother, but lost what now looks like 50 seconds to see what Sassy was up to. Today, tired, and just a struggle, pace fluctuating quite a bit, depending on how much I was paying attention. Couple of nagging spots along the right leg. Not a good sleeping night, woke up at 2, finally got up about 2:50. On the plus side, forearm is feeling a bit better, maybe turning Phil's famous philosophical corner.
1 PM

Gym 15 [3]

Decided the forearm felt good enough to try a few pullups, first time in quite a while. I did 4 on the rings before it seemed like I might hurt something. So enough for a day or so. Felt a little strain in the lats, and a little in the forearm, so no need to push it.

This was hard to squeeze in. Cleaning lady was here today, so I waited until she left. Then interrupted three times in the middle. First Sassy went off, so I got up to see what was going on (just a propane delivery), then the phone rang, which I did my best to ignore, then Jen Conlin came by to use the hot tub, but I was close enough to the end that I just kept going. Probably lost a minute when I got up, was close to a 22 min pace.

Settling in a bit, not as jet-lagged. Hadn't weighed myself in a while, and of course, was curious. The result was quite favorable. So maybe walking briskly two+ hours a day, running more or less every other day, was a more important influence than having pasta two times a day, or maybe pasta itself is the secret. Then there was the not inconsiderable mental energy consumed by talking Italian all day, striving to comprehend.

Note

Maps from the Mediterranean Open Champs, two weeks ago in Tuscany.

Day 1, Montecatini Terme. Sprint in the Montecatini Terme park, where they opened the amazing Terme Tettuci building and grounds for us, normally closed out of season.

Day 2, Pineta di Cecina. A long bus ride from Montecatini, down to the shore near Livorno. This was middle distance, in scrubby pine forest.

Day 3, Parco delle Cascine. Long narrow park, and so a long narrow map. This is the west part of the map, first half of the course.

Day 3, Parco delle Cascine Pt 2. East half of the park, the second half of the course. Not really all that interesting navigationally, more of a track meet, but fun, anyway.
6 AM

Rowing Machine 21:22 [3] 5.0 km (4:16 / km)

A nice effort for the first time back after injury and vacation. Started too slow to make a run at a ranked effort for the season, but paying close attention to the forearm, which is still weak and sore. I could feel it, and was prepared to back off or stop if it got worse, but it just stayed about the same. Also had a nagging little pain at the top of the R quad, but that got a little better as I went along, and it really didn't bother me. But nicely negative, as they say, and worked up a bit of a sweat on a good morning to be indoors. Sleet outside right now, not all that inviting.

From Pleasant Valley. Rhonda was walking, since her heel is still bugging her. The plan was 25 min out and 25 back, but I figured the way back would be a little faster with the tailwind and slight downhill character. Pretty hard.

A new best time over the last few years, first time under 50 in quite a while, I think.
