Orienteering race (Brown-X) 46:48 [4] 4.1 km (11:25 / km)

Letchworth Falls Classic. Super excited about results. Almost beat Steve Tarry! Had a pretty good run except for #10 when I got sloppy, did not look at my compass nor think about my departure direction and ended up on trail by #11. Oops. Lost about 2 min. Otherwise, a fairly clean run. Used lots of trails which was a nice option after all the tripping I did yesterday.
My run to the last control was too fast--I was thinking the flags were the finish. Oopsie. Had been passed by a strong looking guy enroute and I ran hard down the last trail to the controls at 12. As I approached, I realized that I still needed to run to the finish line! The guy was a few paces ahead of me and I decided to pour it on and try to catch him. I beat him! With the fatigue from yesterday, the heat (75 degrees?) and high humidity, it took me forever to get my respiratory rate back to normal.
Fun race, though it was pretty easy.
Love Letchworth Falls and gorge. Such a dramatic geologic feature. Thanks to ROC for a great event.

Walking 40:00 [2] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Stopped at the new Erie Canal Rest Stop on I-90 East near Port Byron. It just opened last fall at the site where the original canal remnant visible from the interstate has intrigued me for years. Well worth stopping. Even the old buildings, including the old tavern adjacent to the canal, have been restored. The visitor's center has an original model of these locks that was displayed at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Very friendly and knowledgable docents.

Next, we drove to the Erie Canal Park in Camillus. I remembered it being a particularly charming and interesting museum and canal stop on my Erie Canal bike trip in 2014. You can take a boat ride down to the restored aqueduct, or walk a mile along the towpath to see it. They also have an original wooden lock gate on display.
Carl enjoyed seeing both places. It added 2 hours to our trip, but it was worth it.
