Mission Artscape 10km with Presto! Another super fun trivia-O by Rex with questions about the murals around the Mission in San Francisco. My legs were a bit tired, I think just from a stressful week, but otherwise things felt pretty good. Presto was super excited, as always, by the mass start. We had one kind of terrifying moment when my map blew out of my hand and into the street underneath a car. I was sort of like, um, what do I do now?!?!? Do I even know how to get back to the finish???? Luckily it finally stopped blowing around near the edge of a parked car, so I slipped out into the street and snatched my map back. Phew! Crisis averted! Other than that, it was just a fantastic day to be out for a run :-). Fun, fun!

Running 30:00 [3] 3.1 mi (9:41 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 15

Running with Sam and Presto after lab! I'm really ready for this review to be finished. Alas, it is not. Anyway, it was good to not be staring at a computer screen, and Presto was extremely relieved to get a chance to get outside!

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Too late for strength stuff tonight, so just some stretching.

Running with Sam and Presto after lab! Running felt really good tonight aside from some strange cramping in my right arch (new shoes?), and Presto was quite happy to get out, so it was a good night all around.

Strength 14:00 [3]

Normal abs and glutes.

Running 1:13:46 [3] 6.5 mi (11:21 / mi) +460m 9:18 / mi
shoes: Brooks Running 14

Running with Sam and Presto up Oat Hill Mine Trail in Napa Valley! We did a small chunk of this trail as my shakeout run for the marathon last year, and between the months and months of injury and the plethora of other trails to try, haven't had a good chance to check out more of it since then. This weekend seemed like a good one for a low-key adventure, so we headed out.

It was gorgeous with green grass and colorful flowers and vineyards!

The trail went pretty much unceasingly up for 3 and a bit miles before making it to Bald Hill. We considered going further, but my left hip flexor was just starting to make itself felt, so we decided discretion was the better part of valor and just poked around Bald Hill for a while before zooming on back down the hill. Ah, downhills!

There was a restaurant right across the street from the trailhead that allows dogs on the patio, so we headed over there for lunch before driving back to Berkeley. Awesome day!

If you're interested, Sam started a blog with lots of fun pictures on our dog-friendly outdoor adventures!

Stretching 15:00 [3]

Normal stretching back at home and then another round of more intense rolling with some stretching before bed because my left ITB was feeling a bit tight.

Running 59:22 [3] 6.5 mi (9:08 / mi)
shoes: Sacony Xodus

Running with Sam and Presto up to Lake Anza and back! Easy access to Tilden really is one of the best parts about living in Berkeley. It was a gorgeous day for a run, the trails were a delightful mix of mud and dirt, and the greeness of the grass is still holding out. Presto was thrilled to be out for a run, especially one where he got to be off-leash for part of it. It is clear that he didn't get enough exercise last week!

Running 31:08 [3] 3.1 mi (10:03 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 14

Running with Sam and Presto! My legs are surprisingly tired from a day spent mainly sitting and writing my NIH progress report with a couple hour break to try (and clearly fail) to convince middle schoolers that science is fun. Presto, however, was not tired and seems entirely recovered from his injury. Woohoo!

Running 45:45 [3] 5.0 mi (9:09 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 14

Running with Sam after lab! Presto's nearly better, but I figured a few more days rest was probably best for him. To attempt to prove to me that really it would be better for everyone if he went for a run, Presto spent the entire time we were out attempting to get at the cookie in my backpack. While he does zippers quite well, apparently having zippers that go in different directions on the backpack is extremely confusing for him. I came back to discover all the zippers except the one guarding the cookie (which is perpendicular to the other zippers) unzipped. He'd clearly spent quite some time attempting to open the one with the cookie because that section of the backpack was sadly covered in dog saliva. Ah dogs...

Orienteering 56:59 [3] *** 6.5 km (8:46 / km)
23c shoes: Brooks Running 14

Long orange at Point Pinole! Presto is WAY better today, but still limping ever so slightly, so it seemed like it would be smarter for him to just come to the park to hang out but not run. He was a bit upset when I ran off but apparently settled down once I was gone. I was feeling pretty slow and tired out there, but I had a great time. Point Pinole in the spring is always quite pleasant :-). I had two kind of stupid navigational mistakes that cost me probably a minute or two each, but otherwise, it was just a happy run from control to control. Fun, fun!

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching after a side trip to Ranch 99 to acquire mochi on the way home from Point Pinole. Ranch 99 was less full of mochi than I was hoping (although we did manage to find some), but we did end up with a large assortment of exciting noodles and frozen dumplings and things. Yum!

Biking 20:00 [3] 4.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Specialized Hardrock

Sadly, this might be the last mountain biking excursion for quite some time. Sam, Presto, and I headed out to Wildcat Canyon for a nice Saturday afternoon mountain bike ride. Presto was thrilled as usual, and was happily jogging along next to us. Unfortunately, on one of the fast downhills Presto was flying along, and then suddenly pulled up in the front of me. I frantically braked to avoid running into him, but then he was limping pretty badly. I think he sprained his foot or something. This happened back in the fall as well. Presto's still in good running shape, but I'm kind of afraid that he can put more power through his legs than his tendons and ligaments can handle with the hard, dry trails around here (or actually now that I'm thinking about it, maybe the booties also have something to do with it? Back east the trails were soft enough that he didn't need booties for every moment of every mountain bike ride.). Luckily my running speed is so absurdly slow for Presto that I imagine we'll still have many more years of trail runs together.

Presto seemed surprisingly unconcerned about his injury and spent the slow, limping walk back to the parking lot happily sniffing all of the fun smells, so at least he had a good time :-).

Running 30:58 [3] 3.1 mi (9:59 / mi)

Running with Sam and Presto! I managed to get out of lab early enough to get a quick run in before rehearsal tonight. I definitely needed this!

Running 41:19 [3] 4.6 mi (8:59 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 14

Running with Sam and Presto around the Marina! Presto needed more food, so since we had to drive down towards the Marina anyway, we figured we'd just go for a run there tonight. We just missed sunset, but there was still some nice color in the sky over Mt. Tam anyway, and it was perfect running weather. Presto was super excited and bouncing all over the place tonight. I think the pungent smell of fish spurred him on to greater speed!

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Oof! Tight tonight. This felt quite nice.

ARDF (80m) 1:17:44 [3] *** 12.0 km (6:29 / km)
4c shoes: Brooks Running 14

ARDF 80m Classic at Parrie Haynes Park! This went brilliantly for the first 3 transmitters and then kind of miserably for the last one. I did the first two transmitters perfectly, getting to 1 just as it came on for the 3rd time and then to 3 a cycle and a half later. The organizers had made a big deal about only crossing fences at gates, so I ran way around to get to transmitter 4. Apparently, the gate was just missing from the map, and everyone else just assumed they'd be able to get through (which, since there was in fact a gate, was true), so I probably lost a cycle here doing a good deal of extra running, but since we were told no crossing the fence except at gates, I feel ok about this.

The big problem came at transmitter 2, which was my last one. I just kept overrunning it in just about every possible direction because it always sounded like I was quite far away from it. I found out after the fact that the antenna was about 3 feet shorter than all the rest, which explains things. I eventually found it just because I'd taken bearings from every possible direction and knew exactly where it must be.

My hip flexor started hurting a bit on the run back to the finish, so apparently it isn't up to 4 days of hard running in a row, but I'm really pleased that all my body parts held up as well as they did. Super fun weekend!

ARDF (2m) 1:42:54 [3] *** 15.0 km (6:52 / km)
4c shoes: Brooks Running 14

ARDF 2m Classic at Parrie Haynes Park! Oof! Why is it always pouring rain for 2m? I was very happy that I went to the trouble of putting the rain cover on my receiver. A few people had their receivers die out there.

I think I ran about 50% more than I needed to today even though I took the transmitters in the best order. I definitely did not lack in the overrunning department. After I finished, one of the Russians(?)/Ukrainians(?) told me that I have "too much health", which I guess is a nicer way of saying "too little brains". I did a lot of running back into the transmitters as he ran towards them. Sigh.

I don't know if it was my receiver or the rain or the transmitters or just me but the controls just never sounded very close even when I was right on top of them. I did eventually find them all, but there was much running WAY past the transmitter, realizing I'd run past it and then running past it in the opposite direction, and so on. I did still have a lot of fun out there, and with all the hill training I've been doing, I definitely felt nice and strong out there, which was nice :-).

To make the day more Texasly, I nearly got run over by 3 stampeding horses *and* I got to see a jackrabbit *and* in the evening there was someone playing slide guitar! Fun, fun!

Dynamic stretching before the race and then static stretching before and after dinner.

ARDF (80m) 31:57 [3] *** 5.0 km (6:23 / km)
9c shoes: Brooks Running 14

ARDF 80m Sprint at Parrie Haynes Park! SUPER FUN!!! After my disaster with the vegetation yesterday, I gave myself a firm rule of only running on trails today, which made for a much more fun experience. I definitely lost some time at one point when I wasn't sure whether something was a trail or just a seductive break in the trees and ended up going much further around than I needed to, but I was totally ok with that considering that people without my firm no-vegetation rule ended up doing a disturbing amount of crawling today. I also took the controls in the best order, which was nice :-).

The only thing I really could have improved (aside from just running faster) was a cycle or two lost on 5 Fast when I kept thinking I was closer to it than I really was. Apparently this was a common problem, though, so maybe the transmitter was just a bit stronger than the others or maybe I need to get back into the habit of overrunning? Anyway, super pleased with this!

ARDF (Fox-Oring) 1:15:41 [3] *** 7.5 km (10:05 / km)
9c shoes: Brooks Running 14

Fox-Oring at Dana Peak Park in TX! Another new state! This went pretty well for the first half (by which I mean the first 8 controls) and then kind of miserably for the second half (by which I mean the last control)...

The big take away from this is that white and green here is basically filled with these tree/bush things that like to keep hold of their branches even after they're done using them for useful things like leaves. This can either lead to unpleasant, pokey running or unpleasant, pokey realizing that the sunk cost fallacy really is indeed a fallacy and it is now time to turn around. To make things additionally confusing the bush/tree things leave open these inviting spaces between them that sort of look like trails but are not, in fact, trails.

Anyway, it was still quite fun, and I'm going to treat "shortcuts" through the forest here with a lot more caution for the rest of the races!

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching. The calf is feeling pretty good!

Running 25:00 [3] 2.6 mi (9:37 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Trail

Running with Presto at Morgan Territory while Sam set transmitters! Easy-peasy trail run just to get out and enjoy the day while waiting for Sam to put out ARDF transmitters for me. I love CA when it's all green and gorgeous!

ARDF (80m) 1:45:00 [3] *** 10.0 km (10:30 / km)
5c shoes: Saucony Trail

ARDF training at Morgan Territory with Presto! This was WAYYYY better than last week, which isn't saying much, but is good news :-). Morgan Territory is still really steep, but it's doesn't have anything on Briones. Anyway, things got of to a bit of an ignominious start. The map I was using didn't have the parking lot on it, so I was just generally running towards the edge of the map, and took a wrong turn, which I didn't really realize until I had actually made it onto the map about 200m below and a kilometer away from where I had intended to get onto the map. Sigh. We turned around and climbed and eventually got to the point we had intended to go to, and then things went pretty well. We had one minor issue with a control being too close to a fence, so the signal was all wacky once we were close, so we lost a few cycles there, and just general issues with getting into the vicinity and then losing a cycle while we aimlessly wandered knowing we were within 100m-200m at just about every control, but it was still super fun.

The only issue was that my left calf has decided that wearing trail shoes is all very well when the ground is soft and muddy, but now that it is returning to its more normal hard-as-a-rock state, road shoes would probably be a better choice. I was pretty uncomfortable on the second half of this.

Stretching 20:00 [3]

Stretching back at home with lots of extra calf stretching and some calf massage. I seem to have a disturbingly painful knot about 2/3rds of the way up my calf on the inside. Hopefully it will be a passing phenomenon. I decided to wear Das Boot for sleeping.

Running 56:37 [3] 5.8 mi (9:46 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 14

Running with Presto up to Tilden! After a long week that culminated with an 8 hour lab Saturday spent cloning and working on a review I'm writing with Jason and another postdoc, I was pretty exhausted and kind of grumpy, so I figured I'd better scoot out the door before I just sat down and failed to move for the rest of the night. The run up to Tilden was slow and tiring and I almost just did the normal 3-mile evening loop, but the sun was still up and the lure of trails was so close, so Presto and I continued on to Tilden - definitely the right move! Presto got to be off-leash, so he was flitting back and forth looking quite thrilled with the situation. I was also quite thrilled and the trip back down the hill was fantastic and full of fantastic smelling flowers. To top it off, Sam was just pulling chocolate chocolate chip cookies out of the oven when I returned. Perfect!

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Stretching while watching the figure skating championships, which NPR had alerted me to earlier in the day. The day may not have started well, but it sure was a great evening :-).
