Thursday Feb 29 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [1] 8.5 mi (7:04 / mi)

Terrible ice rink weston with a ton of people from super slow to sprint pace. At least got another day to rest the calf.

Tuesday Feb 27 #

XC Skiing 35:00 [1] 4.0 mi (8:45 / mi)

Warmup testing klisters and slow cooldown

XC Skiing 26:11 [3] 4.1 mi (6:23 / mi)

Tuesday night classic
Tired out from life, tough day at work, and having to deal with klister did not go well for me. Tested 2 types of klister on old atomics and found one that was slightly better. Put that on the race skis and no grip. I've been having a lot of trouble with the classic race skis and maybe the pocket is too different from all the rest of my skis or something. So the decision was between no glide wax slow old skis or also no glide wax skin skis, and I think I broke down a little standing there and went for the skins. Had amazing kick up mt weston and around the rest of the course, but really slow glide compared to the people around me. 23% back and a bit disappointing to see everyone take off like that. Whatever, it was a decent workout and I was able to race a couple of girls and a guy also on waxless. A little sad that this could be the last weston event.

Monday Feb 26 #

Running 41:49 [1] 3.85 mi (10:52 / mi)

First fells run of the year. Surprisingly dry. Feeling a bit wrecked from everything in the last week or so, and calf still hurting.

Sunday Feb 25 #

XC Skiing 5:00 [1]

Weston ski with Andy. Some crying to start when she realized I was sneakily putting on her skate skis. And some grumping around on the admittedly hard pack trails. But once we started doing tag and throw daddy's glove at each other then she didn't want to stop. Lots of falling and she wouldn't listen to me on how to get up the easy way.

Saturday Feb 24 #

Running 2:46:00 [1] 19.0 mi (8:44 / mi)

Shamrocks wanted to run 12 miles on a mix of trails and road, so I planned to add on some extra. Ended up with 19 total, which felt fine until the last mile. Different parts really started to hurt then with the worst one being my calf. Aerobically totally fine, but rough on the body.

Downhill skiing 15:00 [1]

Night ski at wachusett. Grim conditions - dust on ice with the occasional death cookies thrown in. Had 3 little kids in our group and it was a bit much for them. I was annoyed at all the older kids/teens that were skiing crazy fast right near the little kids on what is considered a family zone trail. Bleh, not doing that again.

Friday Feb 23 #

Running 1:07:00 [3] 8.36 mi (8:01 / mi)

Morning track workout 6x1000. Really feeling tired and unfocused. Times were all over the place and generally slow: 4:07, 4:16, 4:16, 4:14, 4:25, 4:09. Probably should have been closer to 4:04 for all of these. Almost pooped on by a flying V of Canada geese, but I saw the little projectile and got out of the way.

Thursday Feb 22 #

Downhill skiing 30:00 [1]

Full day at Pat's Peak. Conditions were pretty decent but woods were rough. Good family skiing from almost opening until the lights were just starting to come on for night skiing. A couple of breaks and a very tired kid at the end of the day.

Wednesday Feb 21 #

Running 32:49 [1] 3.5 mi (9:23 / mi)

Feeling tired after the race but sneaking in an easy pond run in the dark.

Tuesday Feb 20 #

XC Skiing 49:47 [1] 7.52 mi (6:37 / mi)

Pre-race easy ski

XC Skiing race 25:33 [4] 5.59 mi (4:34 / mi)

Tuesday Night Race
It seems like the trick is to line up before the joke telling session. Got a good spot, but not a wonderful double pole start. At any rate, wasn't really in the scrum this time so worked my way fairly easily around a few people in front. Got up to Ari and then around him after a turn or two and also the guy in front of him. Unfortunately there was a gap up to the lead pack, but I remember thinking wow this is closest to the lead pack I've been this year. Passed a girl with a really fast start and I remember thinking on no she's hung on to my tail. It was hard to see who was behind me, but soon realized it was Ari. It looked like he was going to pass going up the hill, but I got the lead again on the little flats section. I figured he was bushed from the weekend so tried to keep the pressure hard and do my usual no man's land ski. A couple of guys popped off the lead pack and I managed to reel one in, but the other was putting distance on me. Pretty tired by the end.

XC Skiing 25:15 [1] 3.95 mi (6:24 / mi)

Cooldown with Ari. Talking about how I need work on my jump double pole for those starts!

Monday Feb 19 #

XC Skiing 15:00 [1]

Gnome roam at rangeley ski trails with the family. Out for 2 hrs 12 min according to garmin, but only 1:36 of moving time according to strava. Lots of chocolate breaks and looking at the gnome houses.

Sunday Feb 18 #

Downhill skiing 30:00 [1]

All day downhill with the fam. Cold but some nice skiing. Andy was having a blast and made it up to the top of the mountain a few times. She's parallel turning more and took some turns at speed that made me scared.

Running 1:23:00 [1] 9.23 mi (9:00 / mi)

Run down and back up saddleback access road. Very snowy hard running with too many cars going too fast at the end of the ski day. Also I hate the gross cat calls.

Saturday Feb 17 #

Downhill skiing 15:00 [1]

Downhill morning with the fam at Saddleback. Lovely to be in a condo on the mountainside. Andy was having a great time in the easy area. I showed her a cut-through in the woods and then she was hooked on doing all the easy glades.

AT Skiing 1:33:00 [2] 5.37 mi (17:19 / mi)

Saddleback uphill trail with some fun blue downhills. Generally good conditions but some icy steeps on the uphill trail. I twisted out of my bindings 5 times on one ski whenever it got a little sketchy - guess I need to change uphill din setting or something (if that's even a thing). Saw a bird party on some trees with berries. And apparently got 2nd on the strava segment even though I took some time getting pictures and talking to the fam on the walkie talkies.

Thursday Feb 15 #

XC Skiing 1:02:00 [1] 9.74 mi (6:22 / mi)

Feeling burnt out from work, skiing, and the kid that cried for an hour about her inability to use scissors well between work and skiing. Mostly easy ski with Ari until snow and wind started. Not feeling like much more than an hour.

Wednesday Feb 14 #

Running 56:45 [1] 5.96 mi (9:31 / mi)

Very ploddy slow run on icy reformatory branch and marsh. So cold and I didn't bring enough clothes for the wind.

Tuesday Feb 13 #

XC Skiing 41:11 [1] 6.67 mi (6:10 / mi)

warmup

XC Skiing race 25:44 [4] 5.76 mi (4:28 / mi)

Tuesday Night Race
Started back in 4th row (dammit) and got stuck in the pack. Took almost an entire lap to break through, and took some sketchy lines to get around folks. By the time I popped off the front, there was already a huge gap to Ari's group. I put in the power and pulled them in a bit, but then I was just holding them constant for the rest of the race. Sad no man's land for me while I saw them trading off leads. At least I continued to widen the gap with the pack behind me. The start seems to have made a bit of difference between this race and last. I just feel bad about calling out people who line up in front of me - hard to say dude I'm faster than you and push my way in.

XC Skiing 16:20 [1] 2.56 mi (6:23 / mi)

Shuffly cooldown trying to figure out how my jacket zipper broke

Monday Feb 12 #

Running 1:30:00 [1] 10.7 mi (8:25 / mi)

Longish run since the weekend was so busy. Mystic lake route in the morning.

Sunday Feb 11 #

Downhill skiing 30:00 [1]

2nd day downhill at Waterville. Icy in the morning but warmed up well. Lots of fast skiing by the little kid (almost too fast).

Saturday Feb 10 #

Downhill skiing 30:00 [1]

Waterville valley in the hot sun and slush with the family.

XC Skiing 2:54:00 [1] 23.9 mi (7:17 / mi)

Apres ski nordic ski around northern trails at waterville. A little suctiony and not very fast. I was having a great time until a storm opened up going up tripoli. And even worse were the icy daggers in my eyes and ice cream headache on the way down. Since I was only 2 hrs in at that point, I kept going up snows mountain and as much of the cascade brook that was groomed. On the way back down into town my hands froze so bad after being soaked in light gloves. Spent 15 min warming them back up in the hotel trying not to cry/pass out.

Friday Feb 9 #

Running 1:01:00 [1] 7.89 mi (7:44 / mi)

Up late last night to see Annie musical (very nice), and had a hard time getting out of bed for a track workout. Got into the groove reasonably well and did 6x1200s at a comfortably hard pace: 5:05, 5:12, 5:12, 4:52, 5:12, 5:11. Maybe should have gone a little harder, but tired + mornings + not wanting to kill my legs after having mostly been skiing.

Wednesday Feb 7 #

XC Skiing 1:21:00 [1] 13.97 mi (5:48 / mi)

Conversational distance ski with Ari at Weston. Fast hardpacked conditions.

Tuesday Feb 6 #

XC Skiing 43:33 [1] 6.56 mi (6:38 / mi)

Pre-race laps on slow skis.

XC Skiing 25:00 [4] 5.33 mi (4:41 / mi)

Tuesday night race
Started out in 2nd row (thank you older guy for switching spots with me). Unfortunately slower than most of the guys with the double pole start, but got a decent place once the skating started. Side by side w/ Ari for a bit, then skied ahead to stop a gap from forming. Hannah had recovered from a lost pole and zoomed by the group I was following. Managed a pass on the group then promptly stuck in no man's land for rest of race. Couldn't quite bridge up to the next guy and kept it somewhat consistent. But then he saw me around a 180 turn and put on some gas. Lost more distance on the last lap but mercifully didn't get caught by the guys behind me. Not a bad race and pretty good place. Need to work on the turbo push to close gaps and not just hang at the same distance forever.

XC Skiing 16:00 [1] 2.2 mi (7:16 / mi)

Cool down w/ Ari during 2nd race.

Monday Feb 5 #

Running 46:45 [1] 5.49 mi (8:31 / mi)

Morning jog before work. Made some questionable route choices down busy roads. Bleh.

Sunday Feb 4 #

Downhill skiing 30:00 [1]

Crotched Mountain with Andy's friend's family. Had a nice day but not my favorite mountain. Stupid slow lifts in the easy area and main fast lift funneled everyone down the same intermediate trails. The kids skied the hard stuff well, but one of them got hit by a snowboarder and it was just chaos in some places. Got to do some fast trails with the other mom while the guys watched the kids butt-slide on a hill.

Saturday Feb 3 #

Running 2:20:00 [1] 15.5 mi (9:02 / mi)

Loopy run around Woburn. First out the ripper to get some hills and distance. Then found the Shamrocks at the pond. They were running shorter because of a Sunday race. Then back on my own on the tri-city greenway. Watch died near the top of garfield hill about a mile from home.

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [0] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Very sad start to a weston ski with Andy. Wind was too windy and her cheeks were cold. Legs were tired and couldn't get up the hill. This went on for 30 min. I ran down the the car and got goldfish and not sure if it was me swapping with Graham or her getting food, but then everything was fine. Skied around happily for a bit longer. Wish I could predict the moods or problem solve the bad days better.

Friday Feb 2 #

Running 40:44 [1] 4.47 mi (9:07 / mi)

Freedom at last. Or at least enough time to go for a short morning run while Graham does breakfast and school prep. Horn pond trails. Scared up a bunch of ducks and saw a group of 10 super active squirrels doing squirrel things.
