QOC Patapsco CCBC (Mid-Atlantic Championships) - Green

A pretty nice day for December and beautiful woods with the occasional somewhat thorny patch. I found most of the course to be fairly easy with lots of trail routes and controls not far from the trail.

Two mistakes - at 7 the trail I picked up after the stream may not have been the one I thought. I actually saw the control but it seemed way too low and I climbed the hill before seeing some other rocks and realizing that might have been mine after all. I went back down and it was. Then I had to climb the hill again to leave.

8 to 9 I should have just gone to the trail, instead I decided to cut down the middle and got pulled off line by downfall. I hit what I thought was a trail, turned right, and ended up by a junction and then a stream crossing which was wrong. Then I thought maybe that trail was a ride and I had somehow gotten past the control. Finally I realized it was the dried intermittent stream bed and I was on the smaller trail north of the control. Stupid error on what should have been an easy beginner level control.

QOC Patapsco CCBC (Mid-Atlantic Championships) - Relay Leg 1

Little campus sprint relay which was so fun. Not enough SVO people to make a team, I ended up on a mixed team with Patty C and Kathy M (who had arrived late and was still in the woods on her first course when the relay started.)

Somehow I got the shortest leg which was actually ok because I was pretty dead from the first race. We were a 9 point team so started first. I was keeping ahead of a decent number of people until I made an error at 5, same as a lot of people. I was about to go into the patio thing, then saw outside corner on the description and thought aha, a trick. Unfortunately, the first part of the description was paved area and not wall, and the control actually WAS inside the patio area. I got stuck outside the wall and could see it, but had to go back around to get in. (Apparently, from what I heard, a lot of people broke sprint rules and climbed over the wall on later legs.)

That error allowed Janet T to get ahead of me and I spent the rest of the time trying to reel her in. I lost a tiny amount of time at 6 by going on the upper level and slightly past the stairs instead of just around the side of the building. The rest of it was fine and I finally started catching her in the open and powered by on the last hill before the finish.

After all of that I rode the Metro into DC and walked around until my feet were ready to fall off. Archives station to the National Tree, down to the mall, up to F St to District Taco because I was starving (ok but nothing special, not better than Qdoba). Down to the Capitol to that tree, then back to the Metro.
