Shadowing Riesa on the White Course at Powder Mills

Orienteering race 1:02:59 [4] 5.0 km (12:36 / km) +225m 10:17 / km

Green course at Powder Mills. Solid race, a lot of climbing (some gratuitous) but no real difficulty, even with some very low-hung control flags.

50F, sunny, very nice.

Hiking 2:00:00 [3]

Red Rocks again - Calico Tanks trail, very nice.

Hiked the main trail up to the tinaja near the top, then did some rock climbing along the cliffs past that. Came back along the ridges rather than directly down the wash.

60F, very windy with gusts around 50 Mph, almost dangerous on the steeper cliffs, but a very nice view of Vegas.

Hiking 50:00 [2]

Easier hike on trail off Canyon Run, paved

Tuesday Oct 25, 2011 #

Hiking 3:10:00 [4] 10.0 km (19:00 / km)

Red Rock Conservation Area, Dale's trail, then up Icebox Canyon to the waterfall - really only a trickle this time of year.

80F, slight breeze, but canyon was in shade the whole way and quite cool. The last km or so was some boulder-hopping and some class 3 rock-climbing up to the last ledge under the waterfall. Police rescue helicopter was hovering near the entrance to the Canyon, but couldn't tell if they actually rescued anyone.

Hiking 1:50:00 [3]

Las Vegas - Red Rock NCA, Pine Creek Canyon loop.

85F, sunny, but a very cool section in the shade of the canyon helped

45F & rainy

Orienteering race 44:22 [4] 2.7 km (16:26 / km)

L2 at Irondequoit Bay Park West. Basically a disaster. Started off toward 10, had to backtrack all the way back to 1. Got turned around on a 180 error on the way to 5. On the way to 6 lost footing on a side slope and tweaked R knee. Hobbled the remainder of the course, but navigation wasn't too bad. Seemed like the loop went on forever.

50F, windy, but rain basically held off.

Orienteering race 30:27 [4] 2.1 km (14:30 / km)

L3 at IBPW. Hobbled from loop 2 but no complete-turn-around errors.

Orienteering 20:00 [3]

Warmup while Riesa was running the white course

Orienteering race 1:01:21 [4] 5.2 km (11:48 / km) +175m 10:06 / km

Green course at Mendon Ponds. Not very impressed with course layout, even the flags that were placed correctly.

Start to C1 fine, C2 ended too far E at the fence, had to relocate, probably lost a minute or so on that one. Vegetation is a bit heavier than mapped which was confusing. C3 was a straight in-and-out dogleg, not particularly interesting. C4 and C5 were Ok but very close to the trails and not difficult. C6 was easy with swamp as a catching feature, C7 was an interesting run following contours. Went to C8 around the edge of the swamp, but it may have been a bit quicker to go back to the trail on the W, although the climb would have offset the effort. I think either way was about the same. C9 was a pretty clean follow the contour run.

C10 was a badly misplaced control, cost me about 7 minutes (based on the splits), and threw me off the rhythm. Didn't find what should have been an easy and obvious placement, so I relocated twice and (incorrectly) guessed the placement was somewhere along the open area as mapped. The flag was actually 50 yards into the woods at the bottom of a valley, not even close to the mapped location. I finally did a circle around where the flag should have been, fought through some dark green and stumbled on the flag. [Pete D. ended up beating me by 5 minutes, he guessed correctly and checked the woods first.] C11 had a pretty obvious attackpoint, C12 was a little more challenging but not difficult.

I saw little point in C13 and C14 - no challenge in C13, with an obvious attackpoint from the top trail junction, C14 served only to add distance.

Yeah, no course is perfect, I know how these things work. I've been ripped publicly over flag placements, and it's not much fun to hear, but boy it takes a lot of air out of the balloon.
