Hiking 3:30:00 [4] 10.0 km (21:00 / km) +722m 15:26 / km

Cascade - Porter from Rte 73 Trailhead

Another clear, sunny morning. Started at the Cascade/Porter trailhead at 0630, took the trail up the moderate climb to the trail junction, then Cascade summit at 0800. After a second breakfast, coffee and sightseeing on the bare rock - and finding 2 summit markers no less - headed back down to the trail junction to Porter. Got to the Porter summit at 0845 - the real summit, not the big boulder at the north end of the summit ridge.

Hung out at the Porter summit for a while, then headed back down. Was at the car and heading home by 1030. According to the trail register, I was the first one done for the day, but passed a regular stream of hikers and a Summit Steward heading up.

For a pretty easy and widely-regarded "starter" 46er, I was very impressed with Cascade. Moderate trail in good condition, enough climb to make you realize its a 4000 footer, and great views at the top. Porter was nice too but more subdued with a forested summit. No marker on Porter.

Algonquin - Iroquois - Wright from Adirondack Loj

Sunny and mid 70's again. This turned out to be the big climb of the weekend

Left HPIC at 0710 heading toward Marcy Dam, took the Macintyre Range trail towards Wright, past the Whale Tail Trail and Macintyre Falls, climbing pretty consistently. About a half-mile after Whale Tail the climb started getting steep, and by the time I passed the Macintyre creek cliffs it was pretty much rock scrambling the rest of the way. Took the Wright Peak trail and climbed mostly bare rock to the summit at 0950. After breakfast and a bunch of picture-taking around the summit and B-47 crash debris, headed back down the rock slides to the trail, took a left and headed to the even-steeper Algonquin trail. Hit the Algonquin summit at 1120. Spent a half-hour drinking coffee, chit-chatting with the Summit Steward (Kayla), and having a light snack before heading down to the Boundary/Iroquois herd path.

Iroquois is another "trail less" peak, but the herd path is not only unmistakable, but once you're on it it's so narrow it would be almost impossible to get off of it even if you wanted to walk around the Alpine Bog. Went over Boundary Peak and hit the Iroquois summit at 1230

Had the Iroquois summit to myself for a while, but couldn't locate the summit marker. Dave said there was a USGS marker but didn't see it. The one on Algonquin was pretty easy but eroded. Headed back to Algonquin then retraced the main trail back to HPIC at 1635

Phelps-Tabletop from Adirondack Loj

Warm & Sunny, mid 70's
Left HPIC at 0720, took the Van H trail to Marcy Dam, then up to the Phelps trail junction. After a moderately steep mile climb, hit the Phelps summit at 0950, and then spent a good half-hour wandering around the summit trying to find some summit marker or tree sign. Couldn't find one, so had second breakfast on the big rock ledge facing Colden, where I noticed what looked like the old Colvin bolt hole drilled in the rock. Dave at the Hostel later verified that there is no summit marker on Phelps.

Came back down to the main trail to Marcy and followed the VH trail to the Table Top herd path. As a side note, TT is a "trail less" high peak, but there's a clear sign pointing you to the herd path and the herd path is pretty much unmistakable. So much for bushwhacking. Followed the herd path to Table Top summit at 1300.

Came back down to VH trail and headed towards Indian Falls, then took 63/73 to the Avalanche Lean-To, back to Marcy Dam. Back to Adk Loj at 1645

MTB-O Advanced course at Dryer Rd

Riding was fun but navigation was garbage. Lost around 20 minutes

Inadvertently cheated on #1 by crossing a couple trails to get to the flag. Gary M explained that we needed to stay on the trails - so now I knew. That threw the strategy off a bit, but I'm not sure that it would have made much difference.

Couldn't find #2 for the longest time, since I had convinced myself it was on Epping, and in fact it wasn't anywhere near Epping. Finally bailed to the big field and started from there, found it in a few minutes. Pulled the same with #5, sure it was on the wrong trail, so bailed again to the big field and realized it was on the bottom of Juicy Bacon. And sure enough it was.

After #6 I settled down and started getting reasonable leg times. Not sure I really like the MTBO discipline, but on the bright side I didn't have to run anywhere.
