Terrain (Grass) 10:00 [2] *
shoes: Oroc 280

Looked liked this one might require some fast running, so I did a short warmup.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:02:00 [4] ***
34c shoes: Oroc 280

SLOC 1Hr@Brormmelsiek(1:5). Did run pretty hard, but what really would have carried the day was more speed through the trashy stuff. I'm just really out of practice with that. Anyway, Yvonne set a good course and the length was exactly what she was shooting for: 1 sweep in just under an hour. Only other sweep was me but, as you can see from the time, I didn't get in. Fun stuff.

Map is odd, to say the least. 1m LIDAR contours that haven't been smoothed. No problem to read them, just weird. Vegetation wasn't mapped very well, but I don't think that was a problem. Visibility was good enough that you could see the nasty stuff from a ways off and decide whether to go around. In general, it was faster to just suck it up and push through.

Big apology to Yvonne. I was sure during the meet that 14 was misplaced and told her so at the finish. Afterwards, I checked and it was, in fact, in the right spot. I still think the smaller ditches would be better represented with the ditch symbol, but the bag was in the right little squiggle. Glad I didn't pitch a fit about it.

FatTire (Gravel) 2:05:00 [2] ***
shoes: Bike: Raleigh RXS (SS/CX)

Had planned on a longer loop, but my legs were pretty soft after the meet and I didn't want to finish the ride with a dead legs grind back on Callaway Fork. Even with the distance reduced, keeping the 57 turning on that grade was pretty much all I had. The climb up from Matson, on the other hand, well, it wasn't pretty, but I did ride the whole thing. Might need to knock the gear down further if I'm really going to make the RXS my only bike. (Gasp! Did he just say only bike?).

Note

I'm going to bring my gravel bike to the O meet tomorrow, since it's in prime gravel country. I don't know the roads out there particularly well, so if someone with more knowledge wants to join me after the meet for a ride, I'd love to have a guide.

Was in the area anyway, getting some replacement tubes for Yaya's amp, so I got in 2 sets, heavy, upper only at UMSL.

Running (Road) 35:00 [2]

In to work. I think these shoes are pretty close to dead and I only have one other pair for roads. Most of my trail shoes are dead, too. Might be making a pretty significant "Christmas gift to myself" purchase to get things replenished.

In other news, I'm still getting something in exchange for nuking my running.

Pere Marquette race report is here.

Terrain (Trail) 1:30:00 [2] ***
shoes: Rocklite 315

More than called for given that I'm coming back from an off-week. But, with my favorite winter trail-running conditions (clear, still, frigid, and a dusting of fresh snow) prevailing, I had to get out and run the Lone Elk side of the Chubb, plus a bit in the meadows and around the Bird Sanctuary. Very easy pace.

Last run for the Rocklites. One of the grommets gave up. Pretty amazing that I got around 1200 miles of pretty rugged trail out of them. It's really too bad there isn't a comparable model with a decent rock plate. They are super durable and light. A good rock plate would make them the ultimate severe trail shoe.

Terrain (Grass) 45:00 [2] **

Well, I suppose I should start running again sometime. Feels like I need a longer break but, when I tried a longer break three years ago, I started feeling worse during week 2.

Powerline out & back since every paved surface was covered in ice and I didn't feel like bustin' something on my first run back.

On an up note: I have secured lodging just outside Leadville for the 100 next summer. The hostess told me I was right to book now as she expects every thing to fill immediately after the lottery next month (if not sooner). Bill, if you want your own bed, let me know ASAP; she has another room, but it seemed like an unnecessary expense. I'll only be using the bed for a few hours Friday night (need to be up at 2:30AM for the start) and a bit Sunday morning (expect to finish around 4AM and we'll want to leave not long after noon to catch the eclipse the next day), so we could make do with one.

Two sets, moderate heavy, upper only.

Then alternated between hot tub and pool for about 40 minutes. Seemed to help a bit, though the legs are making it clear that Saturday's result wasn't lack of effort on their part.

Warmup.

Terrain race (Trail) 1:01:47 [5] *** 7.5 mi (8:14 / mi)
shoes: Oroc 280

PMETR #16 for me. Way off, as expected, though I did take home hardware, so it has to be listed as a race. 24th overall, 3rdM50. Not nearly so bummed over the result this year; probably because it comes as less of a shock.

No watch, so no splits. Conditions were good, but apparently not as fast as I thought they would be. Only 12 people under an hour, which is actually less than normal and the winning time was 52 minutes, well off the record. The names in the top 10 are the regular heavy hitters, so I don't think field strength was the issue.

Full report.

Running (Road) 35:00 [2]
shoes: J33 2

In to work. Pere Marquette seeds have been published. #14 would normally be about right for me. I doubt it is right this year but, it looks like the trail will be frozen solid so I'm holding out a slight hope of being under an hour.
5 PM

Gym (Weights) 20:00 [5]

Two sets, moderately heavy, upper only.

Running (Treadmill) 30:00 [3]
shoes: J33 2

4x2:00T 2:00R. With no watch, my only means of a proper dial-in was the mill. Tempo appears to be off by about 15 seconds/mile. That's around 2 minutes in the context of PM. PR is 58:17. If I break an hour, it won't be by much. Events, not races, right?

Tuesday Dec 6, 2016 #
