orienteering 1:10:00 [2] *** 5.71 km (12:16 / km)

I ran part of the course from the last PTOC event at Kill Creek, but I ran in reverse order and didn't do the south section.

Cold but just a light wind. Still plenty of snow on the ground. Which makes the running slow, tough, and fun.

I learned a few lessons that will be useful for tomorrow's PTOC event at SMP (if they don't call it off).

Here's another phone video to give some sense of the terrain (seems like I had trouble keeping the phone pointed right, so the video isn't much to see):

Mary, Eelgrassman, Fritz and I ran at Clinton Overlook. Mary went off and did a bit of the course, the rest of us ran together. We'd start a bit apart and meet up at each 3rd control. Fritz and I alternated starting first, with the first starter running on memory.

Conditions were ok - quite cold (2F when I left the house) and there was a bit of snow in the terrain. But, the wind was light and many of the trails were in good shape.

Here is a phone video of one leg:

The forest really looks pretty nice in the video.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Just a bit of time on the landboat. The 31-day challenge begins tomorrow.

running 50:00 [2] 2.87 mi (17:26 / mi)

Ran at Clinton Overlook. Snow on the ground and snow falling. The running wasn't as tough as two nights ago, but it was still a bit tough. Really nice night to be out.

The Trailhawks usually run out there on Wednesday nights, but I didn't see any of them.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Just enough time on the landboat to break a decent sweat.

17 min/km! Deeper snow and hillier than my run.
6 PM

running 45:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (5:00 @4) 3.64 km (12:22 / km)

"Snoepulsning." I ran with the headlamp and a map in my hand at the overlook. I ran in the snow and it was tough. In a few places it wasn't tough. It seems ridiculous to take 45 minutes to cover 3.637 km....but there you go.

At one point I came across two fish sitting on top of the snow, dead - frozen solid. No animal tracks leading to the fish. They were about 25 meters from the edge of the lake. I guess they must have gotten there via bald eagle, but I can't imagine why a bald eagle would drop the fish instead of eating them.

Note

More shoveling today. I managed to clear the drive enough that we could get Mary's car up the drive and into the garage. Felt satisfying.

I spent a chunk of time today learning more about Openstreetmap, including learning a lot more about JOSM and reading about Como http://como.oxtract.se/
5 PM

running 25:00 [2] 1.62 mi (15:28 / mi)

Easy jog in the snow on West Campus. The footing varied from bare pavement to packed snow to calf deep snow. Short run felt like enough. Fun.
