running 20:00 [2]

Jogged around a bit on West Campus. Kind of muggy. Kind of slow.

MTB cycling 1:50:00 [1]

MTB on the bike paths, roads and gravel. I stopped at Burcham to see the river level and it seems to be a good bit lower than a couple of days ago. Lots of mud on the paved trail (which I didn't try to follow).

Felt mostly good, but it was also getting hot and the sun was a bit draining. I got a little bit of a bike glove tan on my hands.

MTB cycling 1:20:00 [1]

Easy MTB ride on the paved trails with Mary. I could tell she was tired from her sprints yesterday. Fun. Mary set a new PR for longest bike ride (21.5 km).

Jogging on West Campus.

orienteering 10:00 [2] ***

A very short orienteering course on a brand new map!

While I was watching the Royals game (another fun game with a come from behind win) I created a little map. 2015 lidar, some 2010 air photos, and quick drafting with the latest version of OOM (0.6.2). While I jogged the course, I made note of a few needed changes to the map. When I got home, I made the changes.

The map is the area around Pioneer Cemetery. If I measure correctly, the entire map is 0.06 square kilometers. I like tiny maps. I've had this idea that I should make a tiny map each month this summer. I guess this was May's tiny map. What should I map for June? I'm thinking of Watson Park (formerly known as Central Park).

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

I was watching the Royals game and with the score 7-1 after 7 innings I decided it was time to go for a ride.

I was on my MTB on pavement, out to Clinton and then back via the Arboretum. I stopped at the Arbo and did a little field checking - mainly checking if single trees in the lidar data are still there.

When I got home, I checked the Royals score. Wow, they scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th and won the game.

running 30:00 [2]

Short jog on West Campus.

Rain began to fall late in the day and that meant I couldn't mow the lawn. It has been a long time since things have been dry enough to mow after work.

running 20:00 [2]

Jogged around Austin with an Oobrien orienteering map. Fun but miserable TJOC-like humidity.

Note

Thought about a short jog post-conference. But Texas is hot and humid and miserable. Instead of a jog I sat in the hotel bar with Corrie, Bill, Amanda and Edmonds. Then I walked to Quickie Pickie (recommended by Corrie) for a couple of tacos. Might try jogging tomorrow morning before it is too miserable.

Ft Leavenworth Adventures BingO event. You got a random bingo card at the start and had options to make an x on the card, fill three sides (a U), or fill the card. I decided to fill the card. There were around 30 controls out, but a filled card had just 23, so there was some random luck in which controls you had. I think the planned it to make filling any card take a similar distance.

We used the Adventure Race map, which is ok, but needs a few tweaks. I should make some changes and create a new map for the next season (which starts in August, I think).

I had to bash around in some poison ivy on one control and on a couple of the trail runs.

It felt ok running, but the temp was climbing and there was some sun. I got a bit dehydrated by the end and it took most of the day to start feeling rehydrated.

After the orienteering, we went to visit Aunt Kathleen at the Benedictine Convent in Clyde. It was a good visit.

MTB cycling 1:05:00 [1]

MTB on the roads/bike paths with a little bit of exploring at the Arbo.

I saw Mary twice. First, when she was at the track getting ready to do some sprint training. Second, when I was near home and she was driving. She said she was on the way to buy some DVDs for the nuns.

cycling 25:00 [1]

To work but not home. I left my bike at Sunflower for a tune-up. They're busy and don't think it'll be ready till May 31 (which seems kind of disappointing...oh well).

Met Mary at Sunflower and we had dinner at Limestone Pizza (a place on Mass that Mary hadn't been to before). Dinner was good.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Pleasant weather.

Mississippi Street is closed just south of 11th St. That's a bit inconvenient.

running 20:00 [2]

Grocery store run. I saw the Mayor and his wife at the store. I bought some cookies.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Light rain in the morning was pleasant. Lawrence is feeling quiet with the university students gone.

rowing 20:00 [1]

When I got home I was a bit annoyed with some stuff from work. That's unusual for me. But, it also left me feeling unmotivated.

I watched some Bo Jackson highlight videos on youtube. That motivated me a bit and I went to the basement to row, row.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Easy trail run with a map at the Perry bike trails. The map was 2006 lidar run through KP + OSM paths. I added the paths using Strava heat map data.

It was interesting to see how well the trails fit. They fit pretty well. There were a couple of places where a bit more detail (bends in trails) would be good. And trail junctions weren't as clear in the heat map data as in the terrain. But overall the trails from Strava heat map data were pretty good.

Went to Perry with Mary and Sandy. They ran together about half the time. Sandy hadn't been there before and liked the area.

MTB cycling 1:10:00 [1]

MTB on the roads to/from Clinton with two stops for short runs.

Temp was 50 and there was a steady north wind so it felt good.

running 35:00 [2]

Two short runs with basemaps in hand - first at Clinton State Park and then at the Arbo.

Fun.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I got soaked on the ride home from the office.

KU's commencement is Sunday. That means plenty of crazy drivers in town.

running 20:00 [2]

Grocery shopping trip. The rain had stopped by the time I was running. Felt ok, but took it very slow and easy.

Thursday May 12, 2016 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I was being a bit lazy and didn't jog or mow the lawn. On the other hand, I did some work on getting lidar data for a sprint map of Park College that Reta is going to work on. No word yet on whether we will be able to use the underground areas. If we could, that'd be very cool.

Note

All day at the 21st Biennial Audit Forum in KC. It's the first time the Biennial had ever been in KC and the first time I'd ever attended a Biennial. I'm only doing one of the two days.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. On the way to work I tried to count the number of drivers on Clinton Parkway looking at their phones instead of the road. It was scary.

running 20:00 [2]

A short jog when I got home. It felt blah for the first few minutes, then felt ok but slow.

running 1:30:00 intensity: (1:20:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

Trail run at Clinton, starting from the parking lot by the beach. The trails were in good shape with just a few muddy spots that were easily avoided. The rain that began falling near the end (and hasn't stopped in the 4+ hours since then) will make the trails muddy again.

I finished up with 10 minutes at an honest effort. The effort was honest, but I'm pretty sure the pace wasn't special. It felt good to work a bit harder and running felt better than it has in a while. The temp was reasonable at around 68F by the finish. That helped.

My right ankle is a bit swollen but I ran without thinking about it at all.

I ran without a map. That felt a bit odd. There's not so much to do, just run and look around and think about anything.

MTB cycling 1:20:00 [1]

MTB on the roads in the morning. I went out to Clinton to catch a bit of the Skyline Shuffle 5K. I saw Matt Q looking strong (I think he finished 2nd). I thought Gene was running, but didn't see him go by me. I was spectating at the gravel road just before the final climb. But, Gene was at the finish and we chatted a bit. He'd planned to run but had some hamstring issues and was being smart about not racing.

running 50:00 [2]

After resting while watching a bit of TV (Orphan Black and then Boundless), I headed out to Clinton for a bit of a jog on the trails. It was mid afternoon and hot. The temp was in the mid-80s. The trail was shady, so that helped.

I felt ok, took it easy and looked at the map I was carrying occiassionaly.

Afterwards I felt sleepy.

Work commute. It got hot today, temp in the 80s. Yuck.

I breathed some junk in when I was mowing and was sort of coughing a bit all evening. Yuck.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Nice day out and quiet commute because today was stop day at KU (I think).

running 30:00 [2]

Easy jog on West Campus. I felt ok, but it also started feeling warmer than I like (which means it must have been about 70).

cycling 50:00 [1]

Work commute with a quick errand (stopping at the grocery store for garbanzo beans and mint cookies).

After reading cedarcreek's AP thread on Strava heat maps and QGIS, I discovered that Strave heat map data can be used for OSM editing. I did some OSM editing at Cliff Cave and at the Perry bike trails. Cliff Cave had most of the trails in place, but the heat map data showed some newer (or maybe just unmapped) trails. OSM didn't have any of the Perry bike trails. It has some of them now. I'll add more later.

I like OSM for a couple of reasons. First, I like the idea of open mapping. Second, I have this idea that with a little bit of training on map making, I might be able to get some of the local adventure race organizers to use OSM and lidar to create maps that are better than the crummy USGS maps that they currently use.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 30:00 [2]

I thought about doing nothing because my right leg felt strange. But I started to jog and it felt fine, so I did an easy 30 minutes on West Campus. The cottonwood trees have started "snowing."

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 20:00 [2]

A short and slow jog on West Campus. The main reason to run (and to go so short) was to see how my ankle would feel. The good news is it was sore but not unstable. It doesn't seem like running made anything worse. A bit of discomfort isn't troubling as long as the ankle is stable.

cycling 1:40:00 [1]

Mary and I biked for about 75 minutes, starting at the overlook and heading north on the bike path then east and returning via 6th Street and the bike path. Then Mary loaded her bike up in the car and drove home while I biked home (and pushed the pace a bit).

Sandy dropped by soon after and showed us the maps and some stories from the Adventure Race at Clinton that we missed. It'd have been fun to do (but not more fun than visiting New Zealand).
