Orienteering 1:28:39 [5] 10.5 mi (8:27 / mi)

Great race today; terrain was hilly,
technical and fast. Map was a spot on and the course was well planned. Unfortunately my orienteering did not quite befit the challenge that was laid out for me. A couple of biggish mistakes and lot of hesitations and fine route choice errors. Was not happy when I finished and my result flattered my performance (3rd) - but had loads of fun and got my first world ranking points for about 2 years! Clare was 4th today.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [1] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

2 PM

Running 22:00 [3] 2.2 mi (10:00 / mi)

Went for a little leg loosener whilst we sneaked on to the neighbouring campsite to do some much needed laundry. Also took a (very) quick dip in the river which was refreshing to say the least.

Running 45:00 [1] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Warm up and down. Nice and slow.

Running 31:00 [5] 3.2 mi (9:41 / mi)

I am a muppet who never learns. Orienteering is simple in that you follow the red line from one control to the next. This proved too difficult for me and I missed out a control right at the end of the course. Frustrating as I was having a good race (for me). Nice mix of technical and open fast running. Oh well - roll on the long race.
4 PM

Running 29:11 [1] 3.81 mi (7:40 / mi)

Easy run from the campsite up the deserted main road.

8 AM

Running 47:00 [1] 6.0 mi (7:50 / mi)

Run from the campsite exploring some trails along the river. Had to back track a few times but it was enjoyable all the same.
2 PM

Orienteering 31:00 [4] 3.5 mi (8:51 / mi)

Thomass mass start race. Too complicated to explain when updating my log by phone but a good fun event around the Nordic centre in Kimberly. Enjoyable stuff and raced a guy from Halden for mist of it but managed pip him in the end.

Running 40:00 [1] 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Easy warm up and down.

Note

Wildlife watch: some elk and quite a few lost looking orienteers!
7 AM

Running 2:00:00 [2] 14.2 mi (8:27 / mi)

Early morning run from Redstreak campsite out to radium hot springs (which were hot - checked them out the day before). Soaked up the views and the mountain air. Felt slow and tired but reapply enjoyed the run.
5 PM

Orienteering 40:00 [1] 2.5 mi (16:00 / mi)

Slow explore of the model area with Clare. Nice and tricky - lots of open rock and good running. Going to be fun!

Note

Wildlife watch: a couple of deer and a moose.
7 AM

Running 40:00 [1] 4.8 mi (8:20 / mi)

Run around part of 2 Jacks lake from the campsite. Water was still and a crystal clear mirror reflecting the rocky (literally) peaks. Warm sun recharged my batteries and the mountain air cleansed my lungs. Simply fantastic. No one was around and felt like I had the lake all to myself.
2 PM

Running (Foxdahl) 1:15:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (45:00 @4) 8.8 mi (8:31 / mi)

Run from Lake Louise up to lake Agnes. Did foxdahls along the way dodging the tourists. Reminded me of the runs Ant and I did when travelling in Oz - rock up and run along the most fun looking trails. Touched some snow at the top of the hill. Oh and Lake Louise was breathtaking.

Note

Wildlife watch: a wolf, a confused goat (at the gondola station) and lots of squirrels.
5 PM

Running 1:00:00 [0] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

A day spent travelling up to Banf and generally puttering. Clare and I walked up to the top of the gondola for some breathtaking views (going to have to learn some more superlatives for this trip).
6 PM

Running 20:00 [2] 3.2 mi (6:15 / mi)

In a top gearesque challenge I raced Clare down the hill (she took the gondola). She beat me down but I got to the car first - a draw. Tried to let gravity do all the work in the way down but legs took a bit of a battering.

Running warm up/down 28:00 [1] 3.7 mi (7:34 / mi)

Got to Calgary at 3 pm after a hot and sticky flight. After vetting to the hotel Clare and I went for a very slow run. Really hot out - 25". Felt (very) marginally les tired after than before. Looking forward to getting into the mountains tomorrow.
