Barebones classic at dormain vert- 6km

This is by far the best I’ve felt all week. The easier terrain and navigation I’m sure helped and was a confidence boost that I can indeed still orienteer. Lots of trail options that I tried to optimize without going out of my way, and not be scared of approaches through the woods (and swamps). Most of the flags were visible from quite a distance. Chased down a few others over the last couple controls which was some added fun. Phew, I can still enjoy this sport.
Probably one of my fastest courses ever.

1 hr score-o at Lac Jerome

Only 1 minutes to “plan”!! That’s a twist. Felt very hectic and it took me a few controls to settle in and feel comfortable. It was obvious early on that clearing wasn’t going to happen, so my approach was basically head towards the next closest control and make sure I turn around at about the 30 minute mark. Got a little frantic at the end when I made some blunders that added up and face planted in a swamp. ended up skipping what would have been a few pretty easy grabs and came in 23 seconds late.
Super fun course and terrain. Not having any handicap felt kind of unfair (2 more years until I’m no longer M21!!).

Knockout sprint -Q3 - downtown Ottawa

Super fun sprint course, and surprisingly tricky. Course setter made really good use of terrain. In discussion, I possibly went over one Rock wall I wasn’t supposed, need to read up on sprint symbols again.

Edit: looked at symbols, pretty sure it was allowed to be crossed (but they took our maps).

8th in my heat, top 12 move on

QF knockout sprint -U Ottawa campus

Came in 3rd in my heat (due to a mp ahead of me), so unexpectedly moving on to the semis. Super fun format, especially when you are running mid pack and see the people ahead and behind you. Made a mistake on 7 because I got confused by what the other people were doing (due to the mis punch ahead of me).

Had fun and get to run again!

Wow!- 7:30 pace. That is a speed I don’t train at. Surprising my brain wasn’t totally fried

Orienteering 9:55 intensity: (2:27 @2) + (7:28 @3) *** 1.2 mi (8:16 / mi)

Semifinals- university of Ottawa campus

A bit overmatched, but I came in 4/6 (again due to a mispunch). This course had butterfly loops so the primary chance to see people was at the common center control. Came into it the last control mere seconds ahead of the last guy, so motivation to sprint the finish chute. Definitely not reading the map as well, I think I was physically and mentally tired.

This is a cool format. Hope it happens more often.

The ark- long- 9.9km, 580m of climb.

I knew going into this that I had probably signed up for the wrong course, but figured I’d give it a go. Only got to control 11 out of 21, and that took over 2 hours. Also almost hit the climb total despite only doing half the course. Not sure what I was doing wrong, it felt like each control was on its own mountain with no flatter options available.. nav actually went quite well, just didn’t have the oomph to keep going.

Blue- 4.7km, 19c, 290m climb

We arranged our start times so I was the very first start and Syd was the last start in hopes I could be back on time to swap G. Yea that didn’t work.

I had a disaster run. Ran to the right spot on 1 but somehow failed to see the flag and wasted several minutes circling back to where I started and finding the flag. Nav was very inefficient and unfocused after that. Went to 10 instead of 8. Started getting worried about the time pressure of getting back on time for Syd to start and then making even more mistakes. Ended up calling it at 15 and getting back to the finish as quick as I could, which still wasnt fast enough. Luckily Syd had found a friendly volunteer to watch G, and G is relatively easy to take off (at least when he’s outside). Ended up only being a few minutes, but not enough time to cross paths with Syd so she knew we were good.

Weve learned this lesson before, but it reiterates that Syd should go first if there’s any timing question, and/or I should run down a few courses (or not run), or pre-run. So many options and we failed at all of them.
