Rogaining race (Spring 12 Hr) 11:45:31 [5] 50.54 km (13:58 / km) +891m 12:50 / km
shoes: Salomons XR Mission

12 hr Spring with Polly. (her 1st rogaine ever)

In planning she made the comment of why dont be clear the map - and once I showed a very rough distance realism prevailed.

We planned to attack the hard ground in the SE earlier in the race whilst we were fresh and it was light leaving nave by road in the top half for night time. plotted 61km which was a stretch but achievable.

Out to 84 we got sucked a little left following people but correctly quickly and got to the point same time as most the masses.

We went back to 35 whilst the masses went toward 107. 35 was easy enough but we realised already down on time schedule. Jogged sections to 65.

65 was a nice find after some initial debate on its exact position. Tacking still slightly behind we jogged onward (downhills and flats) to 106.

Just before 106 we were 5 mins behind schedule - fine in my book but polly discovered she had dropped the punch card and ran back to find it - Probably an unrealistic goal as we didn't know where we dropped it. after 10 mins faffing we got done to 106 and resumed. 15 minutes behind and also abit blue on losing 170 points.

Had to talk Polly back into the game because she was a bit crushed from losing it - but at least early in the piece.

Made good time to 85. Then things went silly. went straight at 64 rather than going back to a track or east to track. The leg should have taken maybe 10 minutes took like 30-45.. We hit the point flush but the route was horrible and was probably the lowest point for us in the day. it was humid and hard going and the bush was horrible. Being a full hr behind schedule now we dropped 96 and went straight for 97.

Made good time down to the area of 97 but cut in early lost 10-15 on first search went back to track and realised issue went along and reentered at the right point. As we discussed our approach to the point a father and son came from our right and ass they passed said it is up there up and over. We turned and went the direction - contrary to our thoughts. I slipped here and broke my compass :(. Got to the top of the hill and found other teams hunting... felt very similar to where we had hunted before - after another 10 mins Polly convinced me we where right before and the father/son sold us a bum steer... seems they did those rotten bastards!

Found the point on the opposite hill very close to where we planned to attack. however had lost a good 25-30 mins dicking around. Pressure was on now and we did a good run down to 109 - nearly killed me but Polly just powered through.

86 went via bush might have been a bit slower than using the track in hindsight but we hit it well. then 75 beautifully navigated by both of us - abit slow but hit it nicely. We started to regain some comfort and confidence after the terrible start. up to 108 was perfect - was painful getting up there 1 from steepness and 2 the bushes around it!

Across to 95 - had to dig around a bit up the river to find it but did within a reasonable time frame. We had now dropped to about 2 hrs behind - I knew the bottom section was going to lose us about 45-1hr because of the terrain and hopped we could have gone hard along the roads later to catch up - but 2 hours down was a bit much! we still thought we could do alright though.

62 very much straight forward as was 104. We then went up to 87 missed a little to left but used ground well and found pretty quickly. Back to road and now it was catchup time.

I knew I was always going to be the weak link here but which I could jog without killing myself I did. Usually in short stints - sure it was frustrating for Polly but not much I could do about it. 38 and 25 nice and easy and quickly.

Jogged up to 105.might have gone in a bit early - the undergrowth was HORRIBLE! it was slow and painful and we missed the point to the right - Polly suggested it was left which I didn't feel was correct but went over and found edge of swap and as soon as we did could see the point.

Along road and grabbed 24 met a few guys on the way going another direction and had a quick chat. We decided to drop 94 - as getting up there was going to take too long and we both needed water. Proceeded directly to 73. By this stage we had completely stopped focusing on our intended course and started mentally chopping the top to bits to ensure we got home in time.

At 73 the night gear got put on and by the time we hit 40 it was pretty much needed. On 40 we again went in slightly early and way too far - silly mistake. We went back to road and thought lets drop it after wasting a good 10-15 only to see the point 10 m further up the road 10 m from the edge... annoying. made out way around to 61 which was easy.

Dropped 103/time not our friend. Grabbed 52 and this is where the big drops began. We had planned:
52 > 92 > 81 > 100 > 22 > 91 > 82 >102 > 51 > 71 > 80 > 50 > 101 > 70 > 90 > 78 > 99 > 43 > 77 > HH - now looking at that course there was lots of cuts we had pre thought of in planning 92 > 82, 101 > 90, 78 > 28 > HH we had lots of options if we hadn't been as far behind as we were.

We dropped the entire top half. 52 >53 along the road at a good pace and found the point after a little confusion in the circle. 53 > 23 same as before a bit of faf in the circle but got it. 23 > 51 - thought about trying for 10 2but I said too hard potentially not enough time - not worth the risk or pain. 51 we again faffed on the point but got it soon enough.

Time was tight - had we needed to walk from here it would have been tight to make it. We had jogged/shuffled (very intermittently most of the roads). But we needed to go faster - so we set off at a pace along the northern oob boundary. Grabbed 30 and kept going. We found a team in front of us who we had been chasing the tail of for a while at the corner of oob area. They where going into 83 and we where considering it too. They had wanted to go from the corner and I said our plan is to go down to broad watercourse and head in from there - should be easier to get in and out.

They followed along. Polly had sinking feeling this was a bad idea and she was by now in a lot of pain as her hip was giving her some serious grief. However we found 83 flushly and motored off back to the fence. We wanted to get in and get in quick. Also Polly found it more comfortable jogging. We had to share turns of who got the pain because jogging was pretty much killing me at this point. Had been close to sick since 52 when I had managed to get a vanilla slice off the patrol car :P

Down to 66 was nice and easy and pretty quick and home to the HH was the same - happy to be home and out of that bloody rain.

Someone had found our punch card WOOHOO! still dont get the points for it RIPPED OFF!!!

Had some dinner and opted to drive home pre presentations and get dry and warm.

Highlights:
Nailed some nav and Polly did fantastically for her first time.
Getting in on time when we had been so far behind schedule - was a good turn around.
Almost doing same distance as when Paul flogged me - without Paul being there!!!

Low Lights:
- Punch card
- Horrible SE Start
- Legs feeling like death
- Persistent Rain
- Having opted to not bring water proof and consequently freezing my tits off most of the evening
- Taking the vanilla slice and then having to run which was nauseating for the next x hours. (Polly inhaled hers I honestly don't think I have seen anyone eat one so fast!)

Post Mortem
even though there is more lows than highs - I enjoyed it alot more than I didnt as you would with any rogaine you remember the worst bits far more. Course was good and well set I think, difficult but fair. We got unlucky with some of the things that happened but so be it. Havent seen score board yet expecting midfield but hard to tell - others might have had same outcomes as us! Feeling sore today - but alright considering.

Total score 1690 unofficially 1860

- I could write more but I know Ricky doesnt have time for the rest of it.
