Orienteering race 1:15:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) + (45:00 @4) + (5:00 @5) ***
18c shoes: Inov8 OROC

1- Wow! Long route choice on first leg! While a lot of trail running, I did not read ahead, since I try hard to not goof the first control or it sets a bad race tone. Although Heather booked it and got over a minute and a half on me.

2- Bang! 1st place split

3- Darn! Tried to run into the 'tip' of a trail which looked distinct on the map, but wasn't IRL. Both Patrick and I got sucked too far to one side, running through slow crap, then had to backtrack on trail when we popped out. A bit sad to have an early mistake, but still determined. Heather's route to a perpendicular trail was safer.

4, 5, 6- pretty smooth

7- I was trailing Patrick which was both helping and hurting me. Then I saw Kate. So then I was thinking about both Patrick and Kate, which was enough to bobble me through the intersection and run down the wrong trail, do a 180, and sprint back (HR spike!). Dove in too early (as many did) and looked for a knoll (it was actually a depression) and everything looked pretty damn flat (not a fan of the 2m contours with 1m form lines). Thinking about a knoll, I was thinking that it would appear as easily as 4, 5, and 6 had. Wandered around. My adrenaline shut off and I stood, trying to figure it out, while Peteris ping ponged around me (he runs through the woods fast!). I ended up at the other trail, found a control on a knoll (ha!) and took a bearing again from there. Then I went back to the intersection for good measure, to make sure, you know, that I was looking in the right section of woods! This time, went 10 or 20 paces farther, and found the elephant trail that led right into a… PIT. Should have been mapped as a pit.

Well, that sank my race.

8- Surprised I was willing to shoot a bearing into this one! 3rd place split. My bearing veered a little right (do I always veer right?)

9- I aimed off to be safe, but aimed perhaps TOO far off- slow split.

10- Just a little slow, I guess.

11- Route was too zig-zaggy

12- Straightforward from this side (but not for the poor P5'ers coming from the other side!)

13- Same route as Heather and only 7 seconds behind!

14- This showed up as an 'error', but really, I was just exceedingly cautious and walked, stopped some to look around- and saw it over my L shoulder. (again, bearing is veering right).

15- A little hesitation through the weird intersections, and my compass saved me from making a terrible mistake down the wrong trail! Ran confidently down the hill toward the solid catching feature.

16- Ran out to the trail, down the trail, looked around for a knoll- saw it- ran behind it- was happy for actually recognizing a 1m form line hill.

17- Bearing looks good on the gps track!

18- Oh, is this race almost over?

F- 196 max HR! That is way over 220 - my age (29) ..which is 191. Maybe that's a monitor glitch. My max has consistently been 191 or 192.

Ok, bad things:

-HR was climbing to the mid-180's prior to 7 and I was ignoring it, refusing to slow down. The social distraction. Then small intersection mistake. Then a sprint (HR spike) of frustration… and that's the set-up for a BIG mistake!

Good things:

-My bearings aren't that bad. I still don't trust them, and would like one-on-one instruction in lumpy forest to practice it. Seems like I veer right. But ya know, it got me to where I needed to go!

Concrete adjustments:

-Don't start race within 2 minutes of people I know
-Obey HR monitor
-Practice bearings…
-Disassociate myself more with the importance of the race. I put too much pressure on myself to perform well.

shoes: Inov8 Trailroc 235

Warm up, including striders/accelerations. Then mile repeats, with a few minutes rest (jogging) in-between. The mile pace had something to do with half marathon goals, but I just took note of my heart rate. I wanted it near the edge of my anaerobic zone (currently 166), but looking at my Garmin download, it looks like I was mostly at 176, and gradually climbing to low 180s by the 4th lap. Typical. I seem to run in the 170s a lot. My OLD AeT was 171.... but it's not anymore...

working on it!

Only did 3 repeat miles (the Rx was for 4 to 7!)- though I'm glad I did, because it's an 'off' week and I want to take care of my hip.
