2 AM

Paddling race (2p Canoe) 24:01 [4] 1.3 mi (3.2 mph)

Paddle in the dark down the creek and back across the river. Happy to not have to paddle upriver to the dam.

Almost no navigation necessary.
3 AM

Orienteering race 2:30:58 [4] 7.7 mi (19:36 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SuperCross Black

This ended up being the trickiest leg. I think we were starting to get a bit tired. I made a small mistake early on not accounting for an extra intersection. Costing us about 5 min.

The next few points were fine with one we kind of stumbled upon.

As we made our way back East the trouble began. I cut over to the trail we needed to take but then another trail diverged and I chose the wrong one. It took us in the same general direction but spat us out onto the road about 300m from where we wanted to be. It took us about 10 minutes to find where we were on the map and then get the control.

This is when it started to rain and pretty heavily. I got a bit confused on the park roads as the map was old but they tried to update them. So I just followed the terrain instead which was a tad slower but got us to the last couple controls.

I missed another turn on the park roads on our way to the last control but we were going the same direction so we just had to cut back over to the other road on trails. Not really any time lost.

Finished in the rain.

Adventure Racing 14:35:34 [0] 52.67 mi (16:37 / mi) +5783ft 15:03 / mi

Uwharrie 18Hr AR w/Mark/Susan/Michelle

First AR of the year. This was a nice easy wakeup. The weather was decent. Some heavy rain towards the end but the temperature was just right.

The race only contained 2:20 and 16 miles of biking. We moved well on the bikes and wish we had more of that.

One thing we really like about the race was the opportunity to really get whatever you wanted in whatever order. We changed our plan around a couple times but I think what we landed on worked out real well. We were primarily trying to avoid any potential issue with cutoffs but we would have been fine not worrying about it at all. Our choice did get us back across the river and out of the water before a majority of the rain which was nice and got us upriver in daylight and before the current got really bad.

It was also fun racing with some new folks.

Trail Running race 3:21 [4] 0.4 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Trailster

Short run to the boats

TA race 3:49 [0]

Situating our gear for our chosen race order.

Paddling race (2p Canoe) 1:04:08 [4] 4.3 mi (4.0 mph)

Paddle to the southern orienteering course. We collected 3 CP on the northern orienteering course along the way. Only one required us to really get out and trek to it.

I paddled in the back with Mark for this leg. Mark did the Nav and punched the points.
4 PM

Orienteering race 1:25:11 [4] 4.4 mi (19:22 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Trailster

Southern Orienteering course.
Everything was pretty much as expected. We had to search a bit for one control that I took us a bit North to. We almost came back to it right away but then searched N first only to come back S again.
5 PM

Paddling race (2p Canoe) 1:45:55 [4] 7.0 mi (4.0 mph)

Paddle north all the way to the dam and then to TA. The current at the dam was pretty strong but not too bad.

Paddled with Michelle this time to try and even out the boat speed a bit.
7 PM

TA 17:04 [0]

Long TA to change out of wet clothes.

Mountain Biking race 2:20:19 [4] 16.0 mi (6.8 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Short bike ride to the southern end of this section. We had to avoid 2 hiking only trails which was a bit difficult at times. We missed a chance to take a trail instead of another route that had a short bushwhack. Distance was the same just some of it was shwacking through clear forest.

Eventually we made our way to some trails familiar to Michelle/Susan.
10 PM

TA race 9:55 [0]

Quick TA. Loaded our bikes on the truck and transitioned to the trek.

Orienteering race 4:30:55 [4] 11.5 mi (23:34 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SuperCross Black

The biggest portion of the race. We were basically trekking back to the boats and collecting several points along the way that we weren't able to reach by bike on the way down.

The 3rd point was a little misplotted but we stumbled across it as we were coming back to reattack.
The 4th point was really misplotted. We almost passed it as we attacked but I happened to catch it while I was confirming where we were.
The 5th point was even worse. We ended up spending 30 minutes searching for it confident that it wasn't where it was supposed to be so we moved on. I didn't have any doubts or hesitation.

The rest of the points were all pretty good. I took a poor bearing out of one creek but recovered. Another point was a bit off but we realized it and were cautious leaving it to make sure we were still on track.

We finished with 1.5 miles of road "running"

Skip's appointment was fast so he joined me for this run. A long run for him (and me). Not really any water. I adjusted the start location to have our best chance of water towards the end of the run. Would have been nice a bit earlier.

Ran pretty much all the trails. Kind of wish we squeezed in VA Pine at the end but we were low on water and pretty tired so I let it go.

Whole run was almost identical to this:

Raccongaine. I forgot how many briars there really are.
Weather started perfect.

I tried to leave 145 more efficiently but it was too thick and I should have just taken the trail I took in. (lost 3 min)

My bearing leaving 138 was as bad as it could be (basically split the two options) and I ended up shwacking through a bunch of green because I thought I was close to the trail. (lost 3 min)

I then had trouble attacking 139. My bearing wasn't great and the trail I was looking for was overgrown and it was thick. I end up checking out another unmapped evergreen boundary and found the S trail and reattacked just fine. (lost 3 min)

The rest of the race was pretty clean navigationally.

I could have maybe swapped 106/109 for an easier climb to 147.

Had a great bearing and pace count to 144. Terrain and veg wasn't as bad as I was expecting either. I got off bearing leaving 144 but then I embraced it because it got me to the trail quicker.

Almost mad a major mistake turning down the road back to 105 instead of the trail to 131. Caught it pretty quickly and was able to get back on track. (lost 3 min)

Major wind and rain hit as I approached 131 but cleared after 118. It was chilly but was a nice cool-off. It warmed for a bit after but then settled to a nice cool temp. I was mostly worried about crossing the clearing/creek with all the lightning. I got across as fast as I could.

Opted to drop the 4 northern controls. I knew I would be forced to drop a lot of controls near the finish if I didn't and I didn't have a good way to come straight back.

I took a pretty solid bearing from 136 to 134

Started towards 124 after 142 but realized it was not going to be efficient and could cost dropping some other controls so I bailed. Getting back to the road was still difficult so it probably was worth it to get it anyway.

Made another wrong turn onto the trail leaving 116. (lost 3 min)

I only found 2 mother controls

My distance was equivalent to two years ago so I think that was pretty good. Felt like I was pretty slow at the start. Didn't seem to slow down too much but a little in the last hour or so just before the very end.
