Reminder: WCOC NRE (A meet) and Training Camp, Sept. 22-23

We are hosting a one-day NRE on Saturday, Sept. 22, with training events, coordinated by Greg Ahlswede, on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, Sept. 23. Come for just the NRE, or just the training, or both.

PLEASE email me (Rick DeWitt, wrdewitt@snet.net) if you are planning on attending, even if you’re not sure you can make it.

More info below.

• Google maps link to meet site: https://goo.gl/maps/K7k6wGRn91D2

Pond Mountain is a gorgeous mature, mostly deciduous forest, with very little undergrowth (e.g. laurel) or invasive species. It is fast, rocky, and steep. This year marks our 30th year of using the map, with the original map dating from 1988 (Goodwin), with updates by multiple people since then (Dominie, Walker, Despard). The map was last used for the 2016 Senior Team Trials.

A few last minute notes on the NRE and training camp this weekend:

Parking: Parking will be in the field across from the assembly/finish area.

Camping: Camping will be in the mowed lawns around the house and barns in the assembly area. Find a relatively flat spot that won’t interfere with the activities, and call it home. Another option is to wait until the last finisher has come in, and pitch your tent in the flat grassy vehicle track that served as the run-in to the finish. Steve and Christine (who live in the house there) said to feel free to use the chairs and tables near the barn, make a fire in the fire pit, etc.

Walk to the start: About 800 meters along a good trail, with essentially no climb.

Awards: There is of course the extraordinary prestige factor, but in lieu of awards we will use the money we would have spent and donate it to the junior team.

Just got this note about a dinner possibility for Saturday evening, from Steve, the land manager for Pond Mountain:

“I also wanted to give you a heads-up about a turkey dinner in Kent on Saturday night from 4-8pm. It would be a great option for people camping out for the night or as a quick meal option after a day of orienteering. The food is phenomenal - prepared by a professional chef from Salt & Char in Saratoga Springs, NY. “

I believe this is the web page for the dinner:

Hey Greg, where do we meet for tomorrow’s morning training?

Gswede:
We'll be leaving from the barns at 9am. The start is at the pulloff on the northern end of Skiff Rd. Don't think many cars can park there.
