I did that the first day of the 2003 Team Trials - have used a backup wrist lanyard on my SI ever since.

Hmmm... I suppose it must be cold enough in Ottawa you were wearing gloves, which would make it easier not to notice the SI card slipping off your finger. But I think the backup lanyard is a good idea even at comfortable temps for bare hands - I certainly doubt my ability to distinguish by feel whether the card came off or not every time my hand brushes against some vegetation.

i was soooooo close to losing my si card during the race as well!! although the band on mine had actually came undone so i don't think a wrist lanyard would've helped anyways. thankfully, i had my fist clenched tight enough that it didn't immediately fall off, and i noticed it before i loosened my grip. phew!!!

ya i was wearing gloves... I noticed i dropped it when i grabbed one of many saplings and couldnt feel the si on my finger anymore. not sure though if i lost it there or before that. I'll put a strap on my next si. Maybe i'll buy one of the faster ones off the net.
