Orienteering 39:13 [3]

Halloween O Adventure Race set by Chris and Veronica....Darryn and I and a girl named Jessica teamed up to give it a go....first O section was fun as we hit all the high spots in Lone Lake park....nice course that was not overset due to the limitation of the map...Darryn and I navigated together...backed each other up....we took some efficient route courses and moved on to the bikes....

transitions 6:15 [3]

transition to bikes...

Mt Bike 1:30:25 [3]

like many teams we left the transition area with a plan to go clockwise around the bike loop but after noticing what we did we were forced to go counter clockwise...no big deal really......we picked up all the points with very little mistakes...a few small bobbles and stop and check the map moments but we navigated well with few mistakes....

transitions 5:10 [3]

transition from bike to trek...

Orienteering 57:58 [3]

Orienteering by aerial photo in Purgatory Park....we over ran #2 because we messed up on the scale of the map and had to figure out what we had done....we relocated and after that we moved well through the course...

transitions 3:01 [3]

transition to bikes...

Mt Bike 32:02 [3]

weight:176.2lbs

actually "ski running"..... ran with poles over to east cedar trail and over to Brownie....did 9 hill bounds up brownie hill (:30 intervals) and then back....poling on every stride with a little compression on my strides makes for a good dry land workout......

Orienteering 3:15:16 [3]

Minnegoat: On the surface you might think that I had a really solid run....and looking at the final results I was close to or in front of some people that seemed to indicate It was one of my better O results ever........

....but only on the surface...there should be an asterisk on my time....because I navigated the last 24 controls with Jim M. and there is NO WAY I could have finished this course under 4 hours without the aid of following....I probably helped him 2 or 3 times to him helping me 15-20 times....

Without doubt, this was by far the hardest terrain and course I have ever done. and to be honest it was over my head. I was having trouble getting into the map...and when I tried going without my bi focal glasses I could not read the detail of the map...disappointing since I have never had problems in day light but the small circles and contours on this map are very difficult for me to see while moving. I decided early on to stick with Jim M. because I knew I would not have any chance of meeting the time limit navigating on my own (and Jim M was on fire...honestly making very few mistakes). I wanted to do the full course and get a good workout so I stuck close and navigated with him but defferred to him many times... The woods were nice and open but I had so many small hills and depression it was consistenly confusing making trying to keep up any speed difficult due to the careful reading the map requires. And if you missed.....disaster...relocating was a major ordeal...

I know I will be in the minority but I would rather run on a less complex map. One that allows more speed and less focus on navigating.....

Hike 10:45 [1]

Hike to Minnegoat start....

Roller Skiing 42:01 [3]

double polled for 22 minutes to the turnaround on the Greenway....skated back.....rollerskiing is boring me a bit this year but it is helping get my arms ready....

Run 15:23 [3]

ran right after roller skiing.....I've said it before but the worse transition is skate to run....the legs feel like bricks.....

Tuesday Oct 13, 2009 #

Note

my big goal of the fall is to get an official finish at the long course Minnegoat....I figure that will be plenty to shoot for running on a map I have never seen before that is supposed to be fairly technical....I think physically I will be able to handle it but the question mark will be navigation...big booms will stop me....hopefully, a few of us in the back help each other...should be an interesting event for me....

weight training 26:42 [3]

bands and dumbells...

3x20 curl, pull ups, stand tricepts, lay tricepts, mil press, chest pulls, lay flys, poles, stnd flys, not sure I remembered them all...

Orienteering 19:26 [3]

Thanks to Darryn for the OTNT....

looking to sharpen a bit with some map running before this weekend....

first of 3 mini score o "find the hilltop/depression circles" OTNT...did ok but still did not get into the map as much as I would have liked...

Orienteering 20:46 [3]

2nd OTNT section....half assed run in the dimming light...still was not in the map like I should be...

Orienteering 28:43 [3]

with the dark, a dim light, and the reading sport glasses fogging I am close to concluding that night O is not working for me...when the glasses where not fogged I still had trouble sighting the map with the bi focal and seeing contours....I basically jogged around and tried to find a few points before bringing it it...I could not see the terrain with the dim light, or line up the map in the dim light with the sport bifocal....but got some time in the forrest in which could not hurt.....

hopefully, the temps at the minnegoat will not fog my glasses and give me a good chance to finish under the time limit...would like to avg less than 20 min/k and get in under 5 hours for the Goat...with careful pacing (running on trail hiking off) and avoiding big booms this is a worthy goal for me....another would be to be under the winning time x 1.8...we will see....

actually ran the entire time with hiking poles doing ski imitation with a running stride...bounded up some hills...started on the Wirth golf course behind the chalet and made my way over to the mt bike trails while the cyclocross event was going on....using poles seems to take some pressure off my legs which is kinda nice....

weight:174.6lbs
