Cycling 1:36:00 [3] 19.0 mi (5:03 / mi)

Commute and excursion to library. Sore hamstrings from running yesterday. Note to self: ease into running more gradually next time I take a two week plus rest.

Tuesday Aug 30, 2005 #

Running 1:30:00 [3] 10.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Run to work through Rock Creek Park in approximately 90% humidity. Time to get back to running - don't want to slip further down the training time list (not that the rogaine this weekend won't pretty much take care of that).

Cycling 40:00 [3] 8.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Commute home, buying a pair of trail running shoes en route.

Monday Aug 29, 2005 #

Cycling 33:00 [3] 6.5 mi (5:05 / mi)

Commute in. Took Metro home by way of "Mephisto" at the Goethe Institute.

Saturday Aug 27, 2005 #

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Downtown then from the Vienna Metro out to Fountainhead. Having looked up the restaurant for afterwards in Mapquest, I had noticed that I could get off 123 just after crossing the Fairfax County Parkway and take Wolf Run Shoals Road most of the way to Fountainhead. Much nicer (and, for future less overcast days, shadier) than staying on 123.

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

After arriving at the park I went around both the courses to make sure my streamers were still there. One course I did with a couple of adventure racers looking for some navigational practice and pointers before Venture Quest. That was very low intensity with a lot of stopping so I won't log it. It also took a long time so I was in more of a hurry checking the other course. What's logged is running back to the parking lot from the finish of the course on the west side then around the other course back to where the assembled hard core types wanting to orienteer in the rain and low light were gathering. It's good that they were hard core since the rain and general overcast made the lighting an additional challenge on top of looking for streamers rather than bags even on the first course. With the later than planned starts on the second course, we were into dusk-O by the end.

Cycling 1:06:00 [3] 13.0 mi (5:05 / mi)

Commute. Late getting back after hanging around work doing a few map corrections and then drafting the courses for tomorrow in OCAD.

Thursday Aug 25, 2005 #

Cycling 1:40:00 [3] 20.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Commute plus trip to Kennedy Center where the box office is giving away free tickets for the Chinese National Acrobatic Troupe. Pity the performances are set for Highlander day but I think I've potentially overprogrammed myself with racing this September anyway so I'll make my Highlander debut another year.

Wednesday Aug 24, 2005 #

Cycling 1:16:00 [3] 14.5 mi (5:14 / mi)

Commute with grocery shopping and stop at library.

Core exercises 6:00 [4]

Various abdominal exercises while listening to some Dvorak.

Tuesday Aug 23, 2005 #

Cycling 1:06:00 [3] 13.0 mi (5:05 / mi)

Normal commute. Went to see Hubbard Street Dance of Chicago at Wolftrap in the evening, running into Dave and Heidi during the second intermission.

Monday Aug 22, 2005 #

Cycling 1:33:00 [3]

Home to new doctor's offices for drawing of blood to work to home. Was dragging on the first two legs what with having been on a water fast since midnight to prepare for giving the blood samples.

Sunday Aug 21, 2005 #

In-line Skating 1:00:00 [3]

After my parents' anniversary party, an evening jaunt up and down the paths alongside the Rideau Canal.

Saturday Aug 20, 2005 #

In-line Skating 50:00 [3]

In Ottawa, to and from my friend Andrew's new house for a visit with him, his wife of just over one month (missed the wedding due to COCs) and a couple other friends.

Thursday Aug 18, 2005 #

Cycling 33:00 [3] 6.5 mi (5:05 / mi)

Cycling home.

Core exercises 6:00 [4]

Taking it easy running but I may as well resume core strength work at the usual frequency.

Wednesday Aug 17, 2005 #

Cycling 33:00 [3] 6.5 mi (5:05 / mi)

Cycling to work. Took Metro to a course at the FAA in the afternoon and then to see "The Birds" outdoors at Strathmore.

Tuesday Aug 16, 2005 #

Cycling 1:06:00 [3] 13.0 mi (5:05 / mi)

Work commute and the beginning of a planned almost two weeks without running or orienteering, certainly without doing either intensely and probably without any intense cross-training. I think my body could use the rest given how little (slightly too little, I think) rest I've allowed myself since winter.

Saturday Aug 13, 2005 #

Orienteering 53:00 [4] 6.9 km (7:41 / km) +290m 6:21 / km
shoes: Silva K100

Anchor leg of the Canadian team in the Club Cup Relay, Japan's equivalent of Jukola. My last orienteering in Japan during which I apparently finally made the acquaintance of the or a Japanese equivalent of poison ivy.

Friday Aug 12, 2005 #

Orienteering 1:21:53 [4] 8.0 km (10:14 / km) +495m 7:49 / km
shoes: Surrey K100s

Long B Final - my worst first control of the time in Japan (saying a lot, none of it good), otherwise okay. The sole of my right shoe made a big move peeling from the toe - not quite catastrophic but very annoying and it cramped my running form trying to avoid losing it entirely by making sure my foot struck with the sole under the toe rather than flopped underneath itself.

Thursday Aug 11, 2005 #

Orienteering race 42:30 [4] 4.7 km (9:03 / km) +300m 6:51 / km
shoes: Silva K100

Middle B Final - 2 minute error on first control, attempt at a serious parallel error on 10 fortunately caught before the damage got too great.

Wednesday Aug 10, 2005 #

Orienteering race 21:14 [5] 2.1 km (10:07 / km) +150m 7:27 / km
shoes: Surrey K100s

Sprint Qualification - almost uniformly thick green, two significant parallel errors though not, by my estimate, big enough to have made the difference between qualifying and not.

Tuesday Aug 9, 2005 #

Orienteering 1:20:00 [1]

Sprint Model event. Mostly easy running and walking around getting a feel for the terrain.

Monday Aug 8, 2005 #

Orienteering race 1:18:59 [4] 7.8 km (10:08 / km) +500m 7:40 / km
shoes: Surrey K100s

Long Qualification - route choice on the longest leg not so good, otherwise fine though I was getting tired and and therefore sloppy on the last quarter of the course after the coaching zone.

Sunday Aug 7, 2005 #

Event: WOC 2005

Orienteering 23:32 [4] 2.9 km (8:07 / km) +220m 5:53 / km
shoes: Surrey K100s

Spectator race - not all that difficult, worst I did was nearly overrun a control just off the top of a ridgeline. Registered for M21 not realising there was an elite class above it. Perhaps just as well since this was just a warmup/race simulation before the long qualifier. Looks as though I would just barely have managed to win the ME class though, which is rather nice.

Friday Aug 5, 2005 #

Orienteering 1:20:00 [3]

Checked out all of the controls in the main model event. Hot and steep, as advertised.

Tuesday Aug 2, 2005 #

Cycling 1:06:00 [3] 13.0 mi (5:05 / mi)

Last work commute before heading to Japan.

Monday Aug 1, 2005 #

Cycling 33:00 [3] 6.5 mi (5:05 / mi)

Commute in. Took Metro home by way of Hitchcock's "Suspicion" at Screen on the Green.
