Best run in a while. Never actually lost!

Arrived late at the start. Bus was interminably slow and took 10 mins longer than expected. Mystery GVOC runner told me I had been called. Had to go straight to the map line and started within 30 secs. Missed the control descriptions.

1. Looked on each side of the path and saw that green meant green, so decided to take the trail. Was halfway to the road when I realized that I was going 180 degrees from what I had thought, but actually no matter. Decided to use the trail and road to plan at least the first 10 controls. That went fine, but it meant that I was a bit slower than the others. Got the the trail junction and an easy pop up to the top of the spur.

2. Looked like 2-6 were all going to be going straight, so thought might as well concentrate on getting the first one right. Slow and steady into the big reentrant. Pulled a bit low by someone floundering around but quickly decided that they were dead wrong and went up the reentrant to the control.

3. Straight to the boulder with a bit of pace counting and watching out for the dark green as catching feature. 3rd on this leg.

4. Straight up the spur to the boulder with pace counting. 3rd on this leg.

5. Straight down the spur, making sure to pick the right one. Pace counting to avoid overshooting.

6. Straight again. Shocked at the sheer size and steepness of the hill. Doggedly stayed on bearing and hit the depression straight on. Mystery runner had caught me at the crest of the hill, but ditched her as she missed the depression. 2nd on this leg. Took the lead here and never lost it.

7. Went straight to the road and mystery runner was off to my right. Got to the road first. 1st on this leg.

Stopped at the water stop, refueled and had 3 cups of water. Very nice to have someone serving.

8. Very tentative due to road to the left looking like massive clearing, but still 3rd on this leg. Surprised.

9. Straight North to the road and round the roads to the trail and up the trail. Pace counting to the trail paid off because it was very hard to see.

10. First horror leg. Back up to the trail, headed for the trail junction then just ran straight downhill from the end of the bend. Popped out just to the side of the water stop and went straight from road bend to the saddle. Missed the control and circled back around the knoll to find the control and the mystery runner. Ouch! Surprised to be 2nd on this leg.

11. Second horror leg. Really torn on which trail to take. More risk but less climb or vv? Took the less risk and more climb. Climb killed me and was 6th on this leg.

12. Tuckered out and really took my time on 12 so that I didn't overshoot and lose contours. Got there just after Clare D, but she got away quite convincingly.

13. She went left around the swamp and I went right to have a better shot at finding the trail at the end of the cliff. Met Clare at the trail. Bumbled along iffy trail and aimed off across reentrant to spur and nailed 13. 1st on this leg.

14. Feeling pretty bad by now, but just wanted to get out of the green stuff. Headed for the daylight and punched through to a road on the edge of the field. Straight from there. 3rd on 14.

15. Pooped out and indecisive about the trail. 4th on this leg, but looked across the kettle and nailed down the routes to 16, 17 and 18, which paid off.

16. Straight and 2nd.

17. Straight and 2nd.

18. Straight and 2nd.

Finish. Pooped out and could only make 4th.

Mystery runner came in maybe 10 minutes later.

Finished ahead by almost 6 mins.

OMG. Green like I've never seen before!

1. Straight up the path to the water tower - looking at the map.

2. Weak route choice, lousy execution. Chose wrong path on the other side of the road, then too chicken to strike out across the green on the second big bend. Still #3.

3. Chose to go high at the beginning using the power line cut. Good move. #1.

4. Struck out through green to fight to the track. Very, very tough. Got to the track OK, but misread the control description and flailed around a good deal. Went back to the trail and tried again after reading description. Nailed it. Ugh. Cost at least 11min.

5. Having been on the eastern paths made very good time around to 5. Dropped into reentrant and spike. #1.

6. Crummy exit but eventually found a reasonable path out. Pooped out and running slow on the trails. Spike, but #6.

7. OMG. Salal hell. Ended up in salal over my head, got briars wrapped around my ankles, fell backwards down the hill. Lucky no damage, but slow to disentangle. Easy control. #8.

8. Felt good about exit up the reentrant as most efficient route to roads. Easy spike. #3.

9. Picked up the end of the trail and passed a couple of folks to spike. #1.

10. Chose the eastern switchback and contoured. Slow up the hill. Spike. #3.

11. Took the route along the campsite roads. Widely ridiculed for route choice, but #1.

12. Just too easy.

F. Punked. Made N for the download tent instead of NW to hidden F. Sprinted up the hill to screams and shouts only to realize they're all trying to get me to look at my map. Ugh.

Runner's course. If only on 4...

Straightforward sprint. Looked too early for the 'cave' on 5.

Scoped 9, 12, 13 and 14 on the way to 8. Scoped 10 and 11 on the way to 9. Figured out that 9 and 10 were on top, which stood me well. Lots of folks lost time doing 2 extra sets of stairs.

Fun.
