A nice OLOU meet in Lapping park, although mine was a pretty crummy performance. It took me about 6 controls before I really got comfortable with the map. I made the dreaded, stupid, and rare "90-degree error" coming out of #2 and took some time to get over my confusion. I don't know how I missed control #5. On re-analyzing my route afterward, I must have passed right next to it (before punching it, about 8 minutes later). Right about as I was tuning into the map, I stepped on a long shard of broken glass that shot through my outsole and into my heel; ouch. I limped to control 6, but got more comfortable putting more weight on it as the rest of the course unfolded. I had a few moments of spot-on navigation, especially toward the end. It was a great day to be out, and it's nice to see OLOU bringing out the e-punch for a meet like this.

A pretty good effort on a great day, in a fantastic park. Brecksville Reservation is an excellent venue – tons of open woods, with deep complext re-entrant systems. I hope that more OCIN members will come up to this event next year.

The course design was great, thwarting any attempts to clear the course easily. I started with the intention of clearing the course, and my route required quite a few dog-legs to pick-up stray controls. Had I known that clearing the course wasn’t really possible (at least for me) I would have planned the trip differently, avoiding the slew of 40-point controls in the dead center of the map (4RB, 4BY, 4JK, & 4CO). I found these 40-point controls to be at least as difficult as any of the 80 or 90’s, and in they end, they just ended up wasting my time.

Control 8NV seemed particularly thoughtful to me. This was a high-scoring control, yet fairly close to the hashhouse, and close to a couple of obvious, easy attack points. By most criteria, this should have been a lower-scoring control. I suspect that the meet organizer (RJM) upped the point value on this control because of its “beauty” factor – an absolutely gorgeous section of this great park. Hopefully, beginners and 3-hour runners were enticed to this location; it was awesome.

There was one minor glitch with the map. Although it was generally quite good, in many places, distances seemed to be a bit off – some too short; others too long. This “warping” happened enough to me that I was able to clue into it and adjust for it. But it also convinced me that it was something with the map; not just me.

I decided to clear the 9 controls in the North part of the course first. This would give me an early opportunity to check back in at my car and change shoes, especially important because I was wearing a brand new pair. On the down side, the North-first strategy took me over a wide river twice, and I was determined not to get my feet wet early. By crossing the river at the bridges, I’m sure that I added extra distance to my route. But I was fresh, and at least I kept my feet dry.

My route:
2WY, 6SH, 9SB, 8SQ, 7FM, 6ZZ, 7DN, 2DS, 6GB
7ES, 4WO, 5UQ, 4XL, 6TV, 3CU, 8NV, 5PD, 3JN, 5TB, 6H8, 5UR, 2KS
9AU, 4RB, 4BY, 4JX (around 4 hours here, I decided to just pick up high-scoring controls and head back)
7PU, 8DG, 8AO, 7BX, 7HG, 7Z7, 7DJ, 3RZ

Made it back with only 38 seconds to spare! This was especially lucky because I neglected to check my watch at the start to figure its offset with the official time.

A great event; thanks RJM
