Orienteering race 1:08:31 [4] **** 8.48 km (8:05 / km)
spiked:23/27c

First O race in the forest for quite a while. This was a new area in Fontainebleau that they have just received permission to use. A very small area and mapped at 1:7500 and the predominant color was black. Very steep as well so lots of hill climbing practice as the course just went up and down the escarpment. Course was listed as 6.4km, but Garmin tells me I ran 8.5km with 164m of climb (sure felt hillier than that!).

Took a little while to get into it, especially the scale and trying to read very fine rock detail while running over rough terrain. Treated the race as a hard training run and that was effective - pretty tired by the end. Messed up a few controls by not really keeping track of where I was and getting a bit pushed around by the rocks. But overall very pleased with the run as I kept running strongly (if not quickly) and ran up most of the hills (a few were just too steep at the end). Some young gun did it in 47 mins which is kind of crazy. But I was happy enough with this first outing - leaves room for improvement :-). Next race is a 90 min night-O score event next Saturday which will be interesting.

Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Easy 15 min jog to warm up and then 5 min cool down at the end.

Swimming 30:00 [3] 1.2 km (25:00 / km)

Good swim while Freya had her lesson. Pool not too crowded so able to swim fairly hassle-free. Tired at the end ...

Cycling intervals (Indoor trainer) 30:00 [3]

A good session on the trainer, gradually increasing the time I spend on there. Did 6 x 1min H / 1min E. Listening to Bach preludes and fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier. Good for spinning a;one to ...

Running 59:24 [3] 11.6 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 19 (Sep 2013)

Didn't manage to get out before work, nor at lunchtime, so steeled myself for an evening run. Got out the headlamp and actually had a surprisingly pleasant run.

Running 49:40 [3] 9.7 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 19 (Sep 2013)

Tough run at lunchtime. Legs felt pretty sore from yesterday's exercise and the heavy meeting schedule of the morning left me feeling pretty whacked and uninclined to run. But got out there and put in a run despite all that. Guess that is why they call it training!

Running intervals 46:19 [3] 8.6 km (5:23 / km)
shoes: Asics Kayano 19 (Sep 2013)

Early morning run on a dark and misty/drizzly morning. Had to use the headlamp the whole way today. Attempted 5 x 3min H / 1 min E. Effort was there if not the speed. Finished up with a good 1 min burst near home.

Cycling (Indoor trainer) 20:00 [3]

Squeezed in a quick spin on the indoor trainer before dinner. Quite nice as the family came in and chatted about the day while I was spinning away. Going to have to get a fan for the room though as got pretty hot after just 10 minutes of spinning.
