Orienteering race 1:08:31 [4] **** 8.48 km (8:05 / km)
spiked:23/27c
First O race in the forest for quite a while. This was a new area in Fontainebleau that they have just received permission to use. A very small area and mapped at 1:7500 and the predominant color was black. Very steep as well so lots of hill climbing practice as the course just went up and down the escarpment. Course was listed as 6.4km, but Garmin tells me I ran 8.5km with 164m of climb (sure felt hillier than that!).
Took a little while to get into it, especially the scale and trying to read very fine rock detail while running over rough terrain. Treated the race as a hard training run and that was effective - pretty tired by the end. Messed up a few controls by not really keeping track of where I was and getting a bit pushed around by the rocks. But overall very pleased with the run as I kept running strongly (if not quickly) and ran up most of the hills (a few were just too steep at the end). Some young gun did it in 47 mins which is kind of crazy. But I was happy enough with this first outing - leaves room for improvement :-). Next race is a 90 min night-O score event next Saturday which will be interesting.
