Running race (Road) 1:07:06 [4] 10.0 mi (6:43 / mi)

MO 10-Mile. Following the convention that if you bring he hardware, it must be a race.

Point of this one was to get in some M-pace training. I knew I'd wimp out on that the day after a hard race, so I signed up for this one to provide some motivation. Plan was to run 6:40's with the option of going for a place if the opportunity presented itself.

With yesterday's effort in the legs it felt a lot more like the middle miles of a marathon. No problem to hold the pace, but it requires some focus and will.

By mile 3 (in exactly 20 minutes), it was obvious that I was going to finish third. The leaders were in sight, but I didn't have the legs to hunt them down. No threats from behind. The middle section was surprisingly hilly and I lost about a minute against target pace. Got half of that back in the closing 2.5 miles. 6:43 is close enough; a good day.

Running race (Road) 30:38 [5] 5.1 mi (6:00 / mi)

Cat Country 5. Finally knocked out a good run in a short race. Conditions certainly helped (55F, dew point in the 40's). Course helped, too, except they measured the last mile long. Got to 3 in 18:13, pretty much as planned and then hammered 4 in 5:50 to set up a real shot at a sub 30. When I saw the 13-mile sign for the half (common finish) at 29:15, I figured I had it in the bag. Unfortunately, we ran another 100m to the track and then more than half a lap around the track to the finish, which is a whole lot further than .1 miles. No idea what the real measurement was (MapMyRun puts it at 5.23, but I'm sure it wasn't that bad). Splits amongst the leaders would indicate that the 13 sign was pretty much dead on, so I'm calling it 5.1. No big deal, but a sub-30 would have been pretty sweet.

Small, but very stout field due to the presence of the Run Well team. 8th overall, 6th dude, 3rd master.

Running race (Road) 40:16 [5] 10.0 km (4:02 / km)

JCC 10K. Course is billed as one of the toughest road 10K's in the area. Of course, no road course seems particularly slow when your frame of reference is the Alpine Shop Trail Series, but even factoring for that I'd say it's generally overbilled. Miles 2, 3, and 4 are all very gentle. If you don't do something idiotic on the opening climb, you should get 3/4 through the race in pretty good shape. That said, throw in a high dew point day and the hills at the end will destroy any good time you had going. Which is exactly what happened to me.

I had rather expected that, so I was training through this one, just wanting to get in a good, hard effort. I certainly succeeded at that and third overall / first master was a nice surprise.

Wholehearted Loop. Hot & humid, but I was in no hurry, so it was fine.
