Running (Road) 33:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Columbia Switchbacks

Helped with registration for Flatlanders, then ran three laps with the leaders before heading back home to make breakfast for the girls.

Terrain (Grass) 58:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Columbia Switchbacks

After breakfast, Yaya and I went to the Bird Sanctuary and hiked the new trail. Also drove through Lone Elk, but the Bisons were all way back in the woods so we couldn't see them well. Got back to Flatlanders at around 3, so all the 6-hour folks had finished. Spelled some of the 12-hour lap counters. Yaya was enjoying herself and doing a credible job of helping with the lap counting, too, so we decided to stay until the end. I went back out and ran five more laps, chatting with some of the competitors. This time I ran in the grass beside the bike path. Feels like I should be able to run moderatly hard tomorrow. Biggest challenge will be getting up early enough to make the start (have to leave at 3AM).

Running (Road) 1:02:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: DS Trainers

Easy jog round the hood.
6 PM

Note

SLUG picnic for lunch and dinner at Harvest. Probably a 5000 calorie day. I guess I'll burn a good bit of it off on Monday.

Cycling (Road) 2:20:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Modest spin. Locked the front fork and the extra vibration didn't seem to be a problem. Rode off one curb and that hurt the shoulder a bit. It will still be while before I can ride a trail.

Terrain (Trail) 25:00 [2]
weight:165lbs (injured) shoes: Sabino TR

Warnup with Bill, plus a little more on my own.

Terrain race (Trail) 25:27 [4] 3.4 mi (7:29 / mi)
(injured) shoes: Sabino TR

Alpine Shop Trail Series. Two laps of Lone Wolf loop plus an out and back to the S/F. Bill got the hole shot! But, he paid for it on the climb - I passed him near the top. Ran reasonably well; it felt more like a race effort, though still not 100%. Not sure about place because there was a big storm coming in and I didn't feel like standing around in the rain to get a result I didn't care about. Something like 8th overall, 3rd M40, but I could be off by a place or two.

Running (Road) 42:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: DS Trainers

Easy jog round the hood. While there's still a lot of extra pain involved, the relationship between my actual effort and resulting pace is starting to look more familiar. The pain, however, is troublesome.

Not so much because I don't like it (though, I certainly don't) but because my recollection of earlier breaks was that by four weeks the pain was pretty mild. I wouldn't call what I'm feeling right now mild.

Some of this may be that, as capabilities increase, I'm doing more and so it's really less pain relative to the activity. Things as simple as lifting my coffee cup out of the car cupholder with my right hand weren't even possible last week. Now I do it without thinking about it. Unfortunately, equaly plausible is that I'm simply coming back too fast and jacking myself up in the process. I'm pretty good at telling the difference between pain that indicates effort, pain that indicates things are simply not right, and pain that indicates you're wrecking yourself. However, I've got so much invested in this marathon that I have to admit I might be confusing the last two.

Cycling (Road) 1:57:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Easy spin for the first hour, then a bit more pressure. Back on the SUV to smooth out the bumps. Shoulder felt fine.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Seems like a complete rest day is in order. Things still feel pretty broken inside, although they generally feel better when I'm moving around.
