Paddling race (Kayak) 51:00 [2] **
spiked:1/3c

Back in the inflatable kayaks (which are very hard to paddle with any authority). We seemed to move through the water better, although maybe it was just hard to tell how slow we were going at night. A couple small bobbles looking for controls, but no real problems. Back into second.

Orienteering race (Woods) 3:44:00 [3] **
spiked:3/4c

Aerial photo at night. David took over navigation and did a fine job of it. Still in second, now behind on both points and time (we skipped a couple controls to get back on schedule).

Cycling race (Road) 1:49:00 [3] *
spiked:4/4c

Hit the last bike leg just as the sun was coming up. Race director removed two optional controls (why?) so we had to content ourselves with getting the easy controls. As before, all on dirt roads with reasonably fast surface.

Running race (Trail) 1:23:00 [2]

Last running section was supposed to be a "hard 2-hour run". Instead it was a fairly easy (albeit hilly) hike (vegetation too thick to run) that we finished fast enough that we could have gotten all the controls we skipped and had time to spare. Ended up finishing third because one of the teams behind us (LBC/High Gear) picked up more controls. Kinda sucked. Full report.

Running race (Road) 1:23:00 [3]

Extreme Heart Challenge Adventure Race (USARA Qualifier) with David, Jeff, and Carrie. First leg was a run to the river. We had to carry an inflatable kayak with us. Fourth at end of run, a couple minutes off the lead (Iowa Active).

Paddling race (Kayak) 1:32:00 [2] **
spiked:3/3c

Picked up another boat and paddled down the Missouri River. Caught Iowa Active at end of paddle.

Cycling race (Road) 50:00 [4] *
spiked:3/3c

Blasted the first bike section so we wouldn't be followed in the woods. All dirt roads, but pretty fast surface. Rode lead with the other three on the tow.

Orienteering race (Woods) 48:00 [2] **
spiked:4/4c

Good map, but the control locations were all pretty easy. David did most of the nav. Finished shortly before dark still in a dead heat with Iowa Active.

Cycling race (Road) 4:32:00 [3] *
spiked:7/9c

More dirt roads, all in the dark. Two badly misplaced controls and some serious problems with the map spoiled an otherwise good course. Not sure what place we were in at the end because many teams were skipping the optional controls.

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

Easy run to get loose for the 8-hour car trip to Sioux City.

Running (Road) 59:00 [2]

Heat finally broke. 8-minute pace with Jeff at lunchtime felt easy.

Cycling (Road) 2:10:00 [3]

Alton "Animal" ride. Actually, most of it is pretty mellow, but there were some big pushes in the mid section. Good sized group at the start, quickly went to five when the pace lifted. Includes 35 minutes of spinning on my own prior to the ride.

Running 39:00 [2]

Over to Y and back.

Swimming (Pool) 10:00 [2]

In a fit of optimism following yesterday's win, I registered for the Babler Beast. Sure I haven't swam in a year, but I'm sure I can get prepared in three weeks. At least it's a short swim.
