Cycling (Road) 1:16:00 [2]

Kate dropped me off at work so I could get my bike back home. Saw the cold front coming, but wasn't able to get out until just before it hit. Temp dropped 15 degrees in minutes and rather pleasant conditions quickly became a brutally cold headwind (which I wasn't dressed for). Adding injury to insult, a large cardboard box got picked up with the wind and smacked me right in the face, so I arrived home with a black eye in addition to frozen hands and feet. At least it wasn't raining.

Running (Road) 28:00 [2]

Back in St. Louis. Early evening jog round the hood.

Saturday Dec 29, 2007 #

Terrain (Mix) 2:04:00 [2]

In Champaign for the weekend hauling Baby-O around to various members of Kate's family. Off-road options are somewhat limited, so I ran from my Sister-in-law's through Parkland and then west on the RR tracks almost to Mahomet and then back. Pace could be charitiably described as relaxed.

Weather was unseasonably pleasant. I don't have too many fond memories of the winter climate in central Illinois.

Running (Road) 49:00 [2]

An all nighter at work had me none too motivated for running this morning; especially when I looked outside to see that it was 35 and raining - my least favorite conditions. However, by lunch things had improved to partly cloudy and a pleasant 42, so I hopped out for an easy jog down to the riverfront. Felt much better afterwards.

Normal training will resume shortly. The break has been good, but not as restful as I might have hoped because I've been working OT.

Orienteering (Woods) 39:00 [2] ***
9c

Warmup (27 min) and down.

I didn't want Monday's session to be the last time in the woods for the year - better to go out on a high note. Clearly, some HTFU training was in order so there was only one remedy: a PR attempt on the Emmennegger Test Loop.

Orienteering (Woods) 18:40 [5] *** 2.5 km (7:28 / km) +95m 6:16 / km

Bam!

Quite a year.

Tuesday Dec 25, 2007 #

Note

A rather loud Christmas morning (not too suprising with Baby-O being augmented by her 5 and 6-year-old cousins). In the afternoon, four dogs were added to the mix. About an hour of that was all we could take so we loaded up and headed back to St. Louis.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:27:00 [2] ***

Temps in the 20's, light wind, and only a touch of new snow made for some pretty ideal conditions. Went to Deer Grove (CAOC 1:10) to run an old blue course. Went without a warmup so I started slow, but my head never really got into it. I tried pushing the pace, backing off, taking safe routes, taking aggressive routes, and all through it my brain just refused to turn on. Hit 6K at just over an hour and decided that this just wasn't the day so I bailed straight back to the car. As pennance for such a lame effort, I went through about 1K of medium green, which is no small undertaking at Deer Grove. Ironically, that was probably the best running I did all day - maybe I should have done that for a warmup.

Terrain (Trail) 35:00 [2] *

Busse South to Busse North and back.

Sure, I could have done some terrain training yesterday when it was 50 degrees and calm, but instead I spent yesterday indoors with the girls (Baby-O and her two cousins) and went out today when it was 15 degrees with a 20-30mph wind. That wouldn't have been too bad except that the parking lots at Busse North were closed, so I had to run about a mile across open fields to get to the woods. Once in the woods, it wasn't so bad, although my gloves were woefully inadequate and I guess I need to start wearing a hat rather than headband in the winter because what little hair I have left on the top of my head doesn't do much to hold heat in.

Orienteering (Woods) 37:00 [3] *** 4.5 km (8:13 / km) +19m 8:03 / km
14c

Green course from the Big Blues Ramble at Busse Woods (CAOC 1:10). Wasn't trying to run for time, but I pushed a little just to generate some more heat. Despite the sun coming up, the temperature actually dropped during the run. Reasonably clean. I love this area; looking forward to the map with the LIDAR contours.

Orienteering (Woods) 28:00 [4] ***
23c

Followed with 12x200@55-70 (varied with vegetation - all were about threshold effort) with equal recovery in the terrain.

Friday Dec 21, 2007 #

Cycling (Road) 57:00 [2]

In to work. Not particularly motivated after another night of insufficient sleep, but it was either ride or run since Kate's picking me up and we're heading directly to Chicago. The ride in was actually fine. Cool and wet, but no big puddles and almost all the ice is gone. No suprise that traffic was quite light.

Thursday Dec 20, 2007 #

Note

Should have gone for a run, but the 14-hour days at work this week, coupled with not much sleep had me wanting to just veg out this evening.

Wednesday Dec 19, 2007 #

Skating (Ice) 12:00 [4]
weight:165lbs

Hot laps between the slow laps with Baby-O. She's getting a lot better. Her lap times tonight: 11 minutes, 9, 8, and finally 6. On the last one she went a ways without holding my hand.

Last G reading until the new year. Went nuts on the spread at work today and followed with an outstanding dinner capped with Bailey's, Brownies, Ice Cream and Hot Fudge. I'll worry about it in January.

Note

BTW, the Carol's Team blog is more or less back in business. You may still see a few hickups while we get the new servers sorted out, but hitting refresh almost always brings the page up.

Running (Road) 29:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.

Monday Dec 17, 2007 #

Running (Road) 32:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Almost classified this as "terrain" since much of it was on snow and ice, but it felt more like road running.

Sunday Dec 16, 2007 #

Orienteering (Woods) 44:00 [2] ***
14c

Control picking at Babler (1:15). Big mistake on the gear front: I wore my trail shoes rather than spikes - no traction at all. Navigated reasonably well, but was moving much slower than usual. As a result, I only got halfway through my planned course before having to bail to get back before dark.

Terrain (Trail) 19:00 [2] *

Back to car.

Saturday Dec 15, 2007 #

Terrain (Snow) 1:23:00 [2]

Over to CC golf course and a lap around the course. Felt like going further, so I went down Mosely to Ladue. David happened to pass me in his van and accused me of scoping the course for tonight.

Orienteering (Woods/Night) 19:58 [2] *
13c

David's Christmas Party O on a new and improved version of the map. Not too many takers this year as the weather had the party attendance down a bit. David got himself really trashed on egg nog, so Yvonne was my only competition. I wasn't as drunk as usual, but I had eaten way more than I should have and couldn't run fast at all. We met about 3 minutes in and she blasted away from me. I figured I was toast, but I think I got some lucky card draws and we ended up tied, so I won on time, having beat the cutoff by a comfortable 2 seconds. (I'm sure none of this makes any sense; but explaining the rules of the event is beyond the scope of this entry).

Orienteering (Woods) 53:00 [4] ***

5x500@2:45 through light green with equal recovery. Used the Castlewood (1:15) flood plain south of the river. As the hot legs had very few features, it was basically an excercise in trying to hold a bearing while moving at threshold pace. Intentionally stayed off the trails. Lots of things to step over and around, but the light green is pretty fast this time of year. Map. Actual splits for odd (hot) legs: 2:40, 2:51, 2:42, 3:02 (hung up in some thick stuff at the field boundary), 2:38. Time includes running to/from the car parked at Lone Elk via the Chubb.

Running (Road) 40:00 [2]

Same run as yesterday. Should be ready for some quality work tomorrow.

Wednesday Dec 12, 2007 #

Running (Road) 41:00 [2]
weight:164lbs

Easy jog round the hood. Legs are pretty much back (this is about my normal time for this loop), but another easy day or two is still a good idea.

Tuesday Dec 11, 2007 #

Running (Road) 42:00 [2]

Easy jog around midtown at lunch.

Monday Dec 10, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

A guilt-free rest day that just happened to coincide with the worst weather so far this year. Sweet.

Sunday Dec 9, 2007 #

Terrain (Grass) 6:00 [2]

Warmup. A bit stiff, but not too bad. For some reason, I always feel pretty good the day after PM. Tomorrow, on the other hand...

Orienteering race (Woods) 57:58 [3] *** 6.8 km (8:31 / km) +210m 7:23 / km
17c

SLOC Christmas Score-O at Greensfelder (1:15). Pretty rough on the nav - not because it was difficult, but because I simply wasn't focused on the map. I kept just running in the direction of the control and expecting it to jump up and down and wave at me. No big errors, but a lot of 30-60 second stuff which is pretty inexcusable at Greensfelder. Still a decent run and a much more fun way to loosen up after a race than a 30-minute shuffle on the road.

First, but David wasn't there. Apparently, Yvonne's party was just a warmup for him. Those who were at the St. Charles Running Club party later said he was so smashed by the end that he decided to sleep in his van in the bar parking lot. Seems like a 1-hour run in cold rain might be just the ticket for a hangover, but I guess he didn't see it that way.

Running (Road) 17:00 [2]

First warmup.

Terrain (Trail) 13:00 [2]

After a quick break to change into spikes, I ran some of the trails to get a feel for conditions. Not as bad as I had feared. Although not frozen, the greasy layer was quite thin, so the spikes had plenty of traction. Some patches of ice and snow.

Terrain race (Trail) 58:36 [5] 7.8 mi (7:31 / mi) +500m 6:16 / mi

Yup.

58:36

After 10 years of trying, the Pere Marquette hour has been busted. 12th overall (of 600); 1st 40+.

Since the Carol's Team site is still down (or, at least, not accepting updates) I'll publish the sappy emotional post here.

One my favorite training books is The Self-Coached Runner by Allan Lawrence and Mark Scheid. What I like about it so much is the way they augment the solid technical material with inspirational stuff like this (from Chapter 4):

For most of us, this stage [the separation of the effort and the perception of effort] will remain merely theoretical, and we will have to be content with relaxation and controlled release of energy. But, if you race enough and not too much, there will be a race or two in your career in which you will glimps something like the elite runner's dissociation, and you will be able to run faster than you have ever run over a given distance, and it will feel easy.

When it happens, remember as much of it as you can, because you will run that race in your mind's eye for the rest of your life.

Today was the day. And thanks, Allan and Mark, for reminding me to take in the view.

Orienteering (Woods/Night) 21:00 [1] **
27c

After lunch at the lodge (we couldn't go to Fast Eddies because we had Baby-O with us and, while very tall for her age, she can't yet pass for 21), I dropped Kate off at home and went over to Yvonne Deyo's 40th birthday party. The feature event was a score O in the woods around her house on a 1:720 map (not a typo - 1:720). I ran the first 10 seconds and decided that walking would be a lot more fun. As a result, the prize cache at the finish was somewhat depleted by the time I finished, but I did pick up a hot wheels car for Baby-O. She was pretty happy about that, but more happy about the fact that with the event over, it was time for pie.

Running (Road) 25:00 [2]
(rest day)

Easy jog on the bike path by Pere Marquette Lodge. Some sleet, but not unpleasant conditions. If it stays cold, an hour is possible tomorrow. If this changes to rain, I could be screwed.

Thursday Dec 6, 2007 #

Terrain (Grass) 37:00 [2]
weight:163lbs (rest day)

Easy lunchtime jog around SLU and Harris Stowe. Legs feel fine; ankle is improved to the point where I don't expect it to slow me down Saturday. The weather, on the other hand, may be a problem. Looks like the trails could be muddy.

Wednesday Dec 5, 2007 #

Cycling (Road) 56:00 [2]

In to work.

Cycling (Road) 1:05:00 [3]

Back home including 6x90s@threshold with equal rest in the 65. A brisk north wind made it pretty crazy cold even through the ambient temp was above freezing (barely). The good news is that my new gloves are in. I'll pick them up tomorrow.

Skating (Ice) 10:00 [4]

Took Baby-O skating, which basically involved holding her hand while she wobbled around the rink. Between each lap, she'd want to get off the ice and rest. Feeling that the intervals on the bike were a bit less than what I'd normally do for a final quality workout before a big race, I took the opportunity to skate some hot laps while she rested.

Tuesday Dec 4, 2007 #

Running (Road) 28:00 [2]
(rest day)

Easy jog round the hood.

Monday Dec 3, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Went for a walk at lunch. Not sore, but with PM this weekend, I need a full recovery right quick.

Sunday Dec 2, 2007 #

Terrain (Grass) 20:00 [2]

Warmup. Almost missed the start because the potty line was kinda long. Foot and ankle still hurting, but not slowing me down any.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:54:51 [4] *** 16.1 km (7:08 / km)
32c

Possum Trot XI. Not a particularly bad run, but less than hoped for. I wasn't able to stay with the leaders even for a few controls. Once in the main pack (roughly 4th-12th places) I shared the lead with Tom Carr, Justin Bakken, and a few others. Things stayed together until the late skips and then Tom and I found ourselves alone duking it out for 4th. It was no contest - I didn't have the legs to match Tom in the fields. One bright spot: moved up two more points closer to the top of the All Time Standings. Still a few years away (if ever) from the top spot, but moving the right direction.

Saturday Dec 1, 2007 #

Terrain (Mix) 25:00 [2]

Warmup. My left foot and ankle were complaining a lot more than I expected from last weekend's encounter with the barb wire fence. I loosened my shoe and got it to where I could run, but I didn't want to risk making things worse. I decided I'd just run today's event easy.

Orienteering (Woods) 35:40 [3] *** 4.7 km (7:35 / km)
13c

Pre-Possum at Woodridge (OK 1:10). Interesting course set some time ago by Kenny Walker Jr. Would have been fun to run it hard, but it was best I took it easy. Still boomed a control when I was planning some routes and lost track of how far I'd run along the edge of a field. A lot of running through high grass which was fun (might have been less so if I'd been really pushing).
