Running 41:11 [4] 5.53 mi (7:27 / mi)

Probably a stupid idea to do a workout on 3 hours of sleep the day after nationals. It was great to be back with the team! Felt so good except for the 1200. Ironically, I didn’t fall in Georgia but I tripped over my shoelace on a flat track

Orienteering 56:33 [4] 3.54 mi (15:58 / mi) +423ft 14:21 / mi

Third day of GNC. Had about 15 minutes of mistakes. Really wish I did better but it was an improvement from Saturday.

Analysis:

Start-1: Headed north on a rough bearing that I didn't really pay attention to. Took a risk on this control that worked out surprisingly well. I ran up the side of the shallow reentrant and found the control.

1-2: I executed this one weirdly. I ran to the northeast and crossed the two trails and the creek. I saw the rootstock north of where the creek ends and took a bearing to the control. Lost 1 minute due to hesitation.

2-3: Took a bearing which went well until I got pulled downhill. I panicked after I crossed the third creek and ran down it a bit, so I tried to stay on my bearing which I had just messed up by running down the creek, but I decided to ignore that fact. Then I got in the flat space which was really disorienting. Eventually I ended up in the ditches south of 4 and took a bearing to 3 using the rootstock and ditches as catching features. Lost 6 minutes.

3-4: Bearing which I immediately disregarded. I ended up in some ditches south of 4 and followed them up to 4. Lost 3 minutes.

4-5: Bearing with rootstock as a catching feature. Lost 45 seconds due to hesitation.

5-6: Ran towards the trail junction with the stream. I was further north than I thought, so I crossed the spur higher than I meant to. After crossing the next to streams, I followed one south to the marsh and found the rootstock. Lost 1 minute due to extra elevation and distance.

6-7: Ran over the spur and looked in the wrong ditch for a sec before I ran to the right ditch. Lost 2 minutes.

7-8: Handrailed the hill. I thought my control was in the ditch, but it was on a knoll that was actually a rootstock. Lost 30 seconds.

8-9: Ran to the trail junction and down to the creek and up the hill. I hesitated for a bit before running up the hill so I lost about 1 minute.

9-10: Sprinted down the hill and to the go control, but my air punch didn't work so I had to turn around and re punch the control

10-finish: fast
lost: 15:15

Warm up

Orienteering 1:20:34 [4] 5.2 mi (15:30 / mi) +600ft 13:58 / mi

Not good race with lots of disappointment. Hopefully I got the bad race out of my system. Gonna do lots of analysis later

Start-1: Took the trail to the reentrant and ended up on the wrong side of the rootstock and couldn't see the control bag. lost about 15 seconds.

1-2: Wasn't really looking at my map and got pulled down hill. I wandered around until I found the control. Lost 2 minutes

2-3: Handrailed the creek and found the hill.

3-4: Tried to handrail the hill but I thought I went too far and I ended up going in a circle. Lost 90 seconds.

4-5: Ran to the creek but I wasn't paying attention so I ran past the junction. There was an unmapped creek branch just south of my control that confused me a bit. Lost 3 minutes.

5-6: Handrailed the hill and ran up the reentrant.

6-7: Handrailed the big reentrant but got pulled downhill to the creek on the edge of the map. I quickly relocated and ran over the spur and up the reentrant. Lost 2 minutes

7-8: Handrailed the hill.

8-9: Ran across the reentrant and to the tip of the spur.

9-10: Ran up the reentrant over the spur, and crossed the creek. Next thing I know, I'm on a trail and I have no idea where I am. I ended up south of the start and it took me forever to relocate. I think it is interesting that I can relocate well in practice but not in races. I think the problem is I am usually much farther away from the control than I think during races but in practice, I'm not too far from the control. After relocating, I ran up the trail past one and crossed the road, went down the hill and crossed the creek. I could see the control from where I crossed the creek. Lost 25 minutes.

10-11: I wanted to play it safe after 10 so I ran southeast on the trail until I caught the reentrant and ran up it to the control.

11-12: Shot a bearing toward 12 and ran down the spur to the trail.

12-13: sprint

13-finish: speeeeed

Orienteering 19:00 [2] 1.0 mi (19:00 / mi) +170ft 16:22 / mi

Why do I always feel awful on the model course?

Orienteering 13:00 [3] 1.0 mi (13:00 / mi) +120ft 11:40 / mi

Warm up/walking to start
I’m kinda nervous

Orienteering 39:36 [4] 2.81 mi (14:06 / mi) +210ft 13:10 / mi

I was really nervous about running green after only running orange courses but the race wasn’t too hard navigationally. Accidentally went to 5 instead of 3 and ran past 10. Other than that, it was amazing. Was trying out the new shoes and they were great!

Analysis:
Start-1: Took the trail south through 2 intersections and looked for the marsh to the east. I couldn't really see the marsh, so I jumped off the trail at a somewhat random point which wasn't a great idea. Luckily, the light green north of the rootstock was very visible. Probably lost about 15 seconds.

1-2: Jumped back out to the narrow ride, which I remembered was very defined from last year's extreme o. I found the building at the end of the ride and took a bearing towards 2. The control ended up being more visible than I expected and I was more careful than I thought I needed to be, so I lost about 30 seconds.

2-3: Ran towards 5 because I thought it was 3 for some reason. I realized I was going to the wrong control when I hit the narrow ride southeast of 5. I then found the narrow ride south of the creek but I wasn't sure if I was actually on it so I moved much slower than I should have. I jumped off the ride when I got to the reentrant with ditches but I clearly didn't take a great bearing because I ended up close to 4. From there, I could see the control and I ran towards it. I expected the pit to be much deeper and I didn't look at my control code so I approached this one with more caution than needed. Time lost: 3 minutes

3-4: Crossed the creek and found the rootstock easily.

4-5: Handrail creek

5-6: I took a bearing and crossed the ditch south of the first creek which somewhat confused me because it had water in it. After I crossed the trail, I wasn't really sure where I was, but I went up the spur and saw someone punch the control on the other side of the earth bank. Time lost: 15 seconds

6-7: pink line. I was a little confused about the shape of the contours in the control circle so I lost about 15 seconds.

7-8: Handrailed the creek and ran up the ditch.

8-9: Ran up the reentrant and got a bit confused by the ditch that I couldn't see because of the pink line. lost about 30 seconds.

9-10: overshot the control because I wasn't precise with my bearing and I wasn't paying attention to contours. I found the marsh and ran up the reentrant to 10. Lost about 3 minutes

10-11: took a bearing and used the three knolls and the reentrant as catching features. I hesitated a bit because the spur looked bigger than I expected. Lost about 15 seconds.

11-12: handrail hill.

12-13: ran to the trail but I accidentally punched the control in the ditch. Then I punched the correct control. lost about 20 seconds

13-14: Didn't see the bridge on my map and ran up and down the creek trying to find a good place to cross. After crossing the creek, I got messed up by the scale and wasn't sure exactly where I was but found the control pretty easily. Lost about 90 seconds.

14-15: Ran to the trail but went way too slowly because I thought the control was farther off the trail than it actually was.

15-16: Sprint

16-finish: speed
lost: 9:50
