Note
(rest day)

Increasingly stressed as Friday gets closer. Not a very restful rest day

11 AM

Run warm up/down 3:47 intensity: (7 @0) + (53 @1) + (2:47 @2) 0.44 mi (8:36 / mi) +8m 8:07 / mi
ahr:127 max:137

Orienteering 58:09 intensity: (12 @0) + (5:44 @1) + (20:51 @2) + (26:20 @3) + (5:02 @4) 5.09 mi (11:25 / mi) +338m 9:28 / mi

Eh, kinda disappointing performance. I wanted to be extremely clean, but was blemished by the second half. Ran on what was the last map which was apparently attempted to be converted to some other course, leading to chaos on the page.

A few unmapped trails sewed doubt into my mind as I approached 13, and I saw what looked like a second stream or perhaps the edge of a marsh, leading me to turn S as I thought I was along the stream N of 13. Turns out it was the trail S of 13 which I realized when the marsh became very noticeable. Hit 15 right: noticed the rocks it was at but didn't see the control so thought I was E at the other rocks; turns out it was just hidden.

Overall, excellent West Point prep. Also shoutout to the lady who said to her walking partners — with just a tinge of spite — “I always think it’s squirrels but then they run past” as I emerged from the woods.

4 PM

Orienteering 1:07:10 intensity: (14 @0) + (14:38 @1) + (39:16 @2) + (13:02 @3) 4.37 mi (15:22 / mi) +182m 13:37 / mi
ahr:135 max:162

Norwottuck with Julia. This map was...lacking in a few ways, and — to my discredit — so was the o-range.

Started out OK, unmapped trail took me to the hill S of 1. That was...not a two contour reentrant at 5, which is why I thought I was at the form line hill N of it. At 7 there was an unmapped trail W of it that led me to thinking I was on the trail S of it, and similar story for the back half of the map. W of 13 stretching all the way to 15 the whole expanse was completely deforested which is such a shame. I ended up walking the rest of the course after 13 just to disengage from what was becoming a quite frustrating experience and just enjoy being out in the woods.

I'm happy I chose to do that. I had a splendid few moments to reflect on the weekend. What a blessing this all is. And what stressful hell this week is going to be; decision day for grad schools is this Friday, and I am so incredibly uninformed at the moment. I'm certain it's going to devolve into a buzzer-beater email chain at some level. But, while I was finishing the course, I got to just enjoy it all.

Run warm up/down 4:35 intensity: (1:05 @1) + (3:30 @2) 0.48 mi (9:33 / mi) +5m 9:17 / mi

Orienteering 59:20 intensity: (2:59 @1) + (13:10 @2) + (32:44 @3) + (10:27 @4) 4.24 mi (14:00 / mi) +251m 11:49 / mi

Ran with Keegan, regular course with him starting 2 min behind. Heavy rain on the drive in, but we started dry until it starting raining heavily again around my control 16. Marshes were double their regular size, hence some goofy looking routes in their vicinity. GPS was quite slow under the rainclouds.

I apparently exited 4 quite poorly. Even when I relocated (correctly!) after seeing the boulder cluster SW of 4 on the line, I took another equally bad bearing which is just suspicious. Eventually gave up and looked at o-range for the distance, 120m? I figured I was on the wrong spur anyways. I initially thought it was dubious vegetation, but looking at my track it actually makes a lot of sense now.

I attacked 11 so well, it's a shame I gave up just a little too early (didn't see the rock at all). 14 there was an unmapped tower which I read as the tower S of the circle. I thought I took 20 well until I saw the rock wall; in retrospect I should've noticed the climb and turned SW to lose a contour rather than NE to gain 2.

Never saw Keegan out there, which I was nervous of after my hash of 5. He apparently had an quite the mare out there.

6 PM

Orienteering 32:14 intensity: (1 @1) + (8:18 @2) + (13:39 @3) + (10:16 @4) 2.71 mi (11:54 / mi) +186m 9:48 / mi
ahr:158 max:186

Nobscot Scout Reservation. Ran on a map without trails (QR shown with trails). Sluggish start, but once I got going it went really well. I avoided all buildings because most looked occupied.

Very happy with these short legs, I think it was valuable training in light of the areas of improvement I identified from the Flying Pig.

ahr:145 max:170

Orienteering 1:00:25 intensity: (5:32 @2) + (3:56 @3) + (20:24 @4) + (30:33 @5) 4.77 mi (12:40 / mi) +119m 11:45 / mi
ahr:183 max:201

Intervals with Keegan, did groups of 5 controls. I got him on the first two, he got me on the last two. It was a bad decision to cut so close to the marsh on the way to 13 when the trail E was so easily accessible. We both messed up 14 a little. I instantly lost out on the last stint with a bad choice to 16 to try to cut off some distance with the trail cut. It looked fine until I was actually down there. Otherwise I think it was the better route.

I was going to do a Night-O but Keegan had to do school or something and someone told me there was a murder there last month at night so I decided against it.

Run warm up/down 20:16 intensity: (9 @1) + (4:34 @2) + (7:09 @3) + (8:24 @4) 1.74 mi (11:39 / mi) +56m 10:35 / mi

Breaking up a long drive with a run in a beautiful national park right next to I-80. Ohio, why you got so many black squirrels?
