Note

Pulled GPS route to routegadget for sprint and score-O.

Orienteering race 12:57 [5] *** 1.4 km (9:15 / km) +80m 7:12 / km
spiked:10/11c

Sprint at Durand. Nice quick sprinty-sprint.

Of course a I pulled a Rob H and arrived in my boat shoes and realized the bag with my running shoes was by the door at the house...-) They're close to retirement anyway, so I decided I could use them, and while traction was limited, I think they did ok.

Good start. Minor hesitation at 2 as it wasn't directly visible as I closed in. (but it was there)

Little trouble with 8 as I was a bit left of the line and the terrain there looked a bit like a nose, and I didn't notice the flag until widening my search.

One best split on 10 as I took a good line from 9 to cut into the trail down, and then I climbed close past 1, and across the top and dropped right down into it.

Good fun.

Orienteering race 44:39 [5] ** 6.0 km (7:27 / km) +300m 5:57 / km
spiked:20/21c

Score-O at Durand. Still in the boat shoes.

Route: 5, 9, 11, 10, 1, 19, 3, 20, 23, 21, 18, 12, 17, 26, 25, 7, 8, 6, 2, 24, 4.

Missed: 22, 16, 13, 14, 15.

In planning I threw 13, 14, and 15 out - no time to get over there, and those hills are tough, and 13 looked non-easy.

I also thought that 10 and 11 would be run-difficult, but flatish to get to; 17 - 26 - 25 - 16 would make nice optional controls if I had time.

So - 5-9-lakeshore was all downhill. (ok, some mud-ish to deal with)

Out and back for 10 & 11. Slight reaction when the terrain going into 10 didn't match what I had first read, but then I saw that it was across a gulley.

And then 11, 19, 3, 20, 23, and 21 were all up the pond. Good counting and speed through there.

The original plan was to go back for 22 and 4 before heading down the road, but I figured they were just as out of the way at the end and left them.

18 - was not down the first (small) trail that I took off the road, but as I came out the trail it was on, I think it was ok. I'd agree that the other trail is perhaps distinct enough to add it. 12 was a bobble - I should have gone up the trail, but two people I was with ran out to the road, and I didn't get a good look at contours and thought it might avoid some climb.

So I ran over to the clearing and then scaled the steeper hill.

17 and 26 clean enough, and decided I did have time for 25 and it wasn't too far out of the way. Crossed the road clean to 7, and hit the trail. Decided that grade was good enough for me and took it all the way up - and by not going straight to 8, I could cross the road and gulley in a shallow spot and avoid some descent and climb.

Swept quickly through 8, 6, 2, and 24, and followed the herd back toward the finish.

Had time to grab 4 on the way by, but not 22. ended with 20 seconds to spare, so it was a good thought. (I could have traded 25 for 22, but then there would have been less option to add something back in if I had been faster)

Oh - see an error here - I came straight up to the finish across the pond - if I had run down the trail to 4, that might have been less-steep and faster. Oh well - I was mostly concerned with the time to climb that hill. I didn't want to get 4 but go over.

Nice 2+1 run this morning. Was about 8:10 for a mile a half mile in.

Morning Run (hills) 56:00 [4] 5.5 km (10:11 / km) +300m 8:00 / km
shoes: New Balance 479 - V4

Back to the Y for hills. Jog down to starting point. 10x ~4 minute loops up the apparently hill, back, and rest. Left my watch home, but pace count for the effort was consistent with last effort's times, and I just used that time here. Walk back to Y.
