Racoongaine 2016

Chilly forecast had us a little worried about what to wear so we packed everything. Ended up choosing long sleeves with rain jacket in case the snow turned to rain. Hat and gloves only lasted a few minutes and rain coat a little longer, but then I was chilly the rest of the race.

Planning felt a little frantic, but the south section was by far the highest point density so we went ccw to hit the higher points first. North section was our end game, but we kind of ran out of time to plan, and the north was low points and low density, so it wasn't the best plan. Made a rough route choice plan, and planned to skip a few points that just didn't seem worth the distance or climb. Knowing it was far from clearable made strategic skipping interesting. Did end up adding a40 pointer back in that we had originally planned to skip.

Syd was main navigator, but we did alternate occasionally and played off each other pretty well. I was able to stay engaged with the map a majority of the time, and this is the best teamwork we've put together so far.

Didn't get lost at all. We tended to choose the safe routes even if they were a little farther or more round about. Did have 2 or 3 where our plan was extremely inefficient, but we always got straight to the control. Vast improvement for us.

Found 3 of 4 mystery controls. These always provided us a little boost because it was almost a free 20 points.

Jogged almost all roads and some trails. Started to get really tired around 4 hours despite keeping up pretty good nutrition. Probably mostly a fitness thing, haven't done much this long in a good while. No knee pain! I expect it to be a little stiff tomorrow, but even with the hills it never bothered me during. I am super excited about that, I was quite nervous about how it would hold up.

Crossed 3 creeks. The first on a log which was precarious but successful. 2 at the end that we couldn't find a good log, so plunged in. Water was colddddd. Second was waste deep, glad it was right at he end because i would have been very cold. Probably had time for one last 10 pointer but I was beat.

Will post the tracks. For now:

103, 130, 144, 129, 118, MC, 128, 145, 120, 146, 124, 125, 138, 126, 137, 150, 121, 148, 133, 134, 135, 147, 136, MC, 114, 132, 131, 112, MC, 102.

990 points, so close to our goal of 1000. Beat our goal of 18 miles.

1/8 coed elite and 7/58 overall

Ate: 2 gu, 1 clif bar, 1 peanuts, 1 bagel sandwich. More gu next time. Drank just under 100oz water, no refill stops, and shared a Gatorade with syd.
Weather: 40, light snow
Wore: long sleeve, zip off pants, long gaiters. Should have chosen bike Jacket over rain coat. Compression socks plus sock liners. Taped ankle and it held up well.

First time out on my new bike! Loved it!

Matched pace from last June 25 on essentially the same ride. I feel pretty good about that considering its March and basically my first ride on a real bike.
