Bush Orienteering (Oceania Long ) 1:05:14 [3] *** 7.0 km (9:19 / km) +255m 7:53 / km
spiked:11/14c

Classic long distance course at Transit Flat.
I love this area, was nice to be back! Wanted a good run to end what was a disappointing week of results so far, but alas....

Started well, drifted a little on 2, but adjusted to the scale well. Track to three was a good option, lost 20secs on 4. Biggest errors at 5 and 7, probably losing me 2-3mins in total in the mining area. Wide right and then track to 8 was okay I guess, but could've gone straighter for the first part of the leg. Left option to 9 was the best route I think, staying on edge of marsh, then cutting off the track and contouring on the flat just above the green for the lsat part of the leg. I was just slow on this leg, probably costing me time. Rest of the course was easy, just one big climb to 11.

At first I thought I must've picked bad route choices, but comparing with the others I actually picked reasonably good ones. So I really dont know how I ended up so far down today. THe only time losses were poor execution at 2, circle at 5 and 7, first part of 8 and in the circle at 8. But I don't think these would've contributed to being 14:59 behind the winner. REsigned to the fact that it must be down to fitness/running speed. Leaving me wondering how to take my training to the next level, because clearly despite having a high volume of training in the last few months, it was not effective/efficient.....

Note

So ends a really really enjoyable Oceania Carnival, great maps, awesome courses and arenas, and some really quality viewing of the World Cup! Organisers did an awesome job, tassie really knows how to put on a world class event! Shame about the results, but it has given me a wake up call and food for thought leading into 2015 season.

As for the future, probably not going to easter so just an easy month or two, building up my base fitness leading into xcountry season and schools champs in june/july. Then Aus Champs is the next big goal!

Easy cruise through Car Villa Reserve. Nice place, wish I could train here more often!

Bush Orienteering (Oceania Race 3) 25:41 [3] 3.7 km (6:56 / km)

Wow. Just wow. What a map!! I love tassie orienteering!

Kelvedon terrain quite reminiscent of warwick (sandy creek, charlie's paddock) but that view! Really fast terrain with areas of complex dolerite rock detail. Had a ball out there and results reflect that, winning majority of the splits and in the lead for a goodly part of the race. Hesitant to 9, small miss at 11 were only mistakes. Until #16. Completely missed it, ran straight from 15 to 17, thus turning what should've been a win into a mp. Wouldn't even have cost me too much time to stop and check as I ran straight past 16 to get to 17 anyway.

Really pissed off at this. no excuses for this kind of lazy orienteering. for this to happen I must have a) not read description b)not have planned ahead/had a plan c) lost map contact d)not taken a bearing leaving 15 e) not been vigilant whilst running f) just generally got cocky and distracted. This should never happen again. Shame it soured what was otherwise such a fun event!!

Bush Orienteering race (Oceania Middle) 46:23 [3] 4.78 km (9:43 / km)

Another fun event in pretty typical terrain. Finally feeling back to normal. Really hot by the time I was starting almost 3 hours after first starts.

Took the first control slowly, then made a stupid mistake on 2 that allowed ronners to catch me meaning I'd managed to drop two minutes in the space of about 250m! At least it forced me to really focus and push harder for the next few, no issues on 3 through to 8. Long contouring leg to 9 I made sure to maintain correct height, picked off attackpoints and nailed control, but the heat was getting to me and really affected my running speed. Picked up a big group through 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 until I broke away and got out the front by myself for the remainder of the course. Looking at splits picked up a lot of lost time from 12 onwards. Small miss at 16 and picked wrong route around the green to 17, was a little bit hesitant for the last three controls in the mining but no errors. Another disappointing finish in 8th, almost 10minutes down on winning time. Only one second behind 7th though.

Wonderful to finish off with a swim with pat sim asha and zoe though!

Running 30:00 [3] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Had a very lazy day as the girls were quite sick. Dad and I went for a leisurely run before tea and a swim in the beautiful south esk river!

Bush Orienteering race (Oceania Relay) 45:24 [3] *** 4.7 km (9:40 / km)
spiked:15/19c

Amazing location, hard not to be distracted by the views of Mt Barrow. Super fun map too, definitely the most enjoyable event of the carnival I reckon!

Went out in 4th after a flying run by pat and an average run by steve. Long leg to the first was pretty easy and got me into the groove, feeling better than the day before but not 100%. Errors in the cirlce at 3,4 and 7 cost me at least 3-4mins in total and was sloppy to 11, lucky to not lose my lead on aiden. But otherwise good, nailed #8 with a careful bearing, which most people struggled on. Not a perfect run, and wished my body was feeling up to pushing a bit harder, but did enough to bring us up to 2nd! Nice to get at least 1 podium finish this week!

Sprint Orienteering race (Oceania Sprint) 18:31 [3] *** 3.5 km (5:17 / km)
spiked:16/18c

Pretty typical uni map, with lots of walls/fencing to complicate route choice.
Still felt really out of it after contracting some stomach bug and feinting the day before...the heat didn't help, approaching 30 by the time I started.

Navigation was good, picked good route choices looking at the World of O analysis. MIssed the direct option to 3, instead went wide left, too hesitant to 10 as well. Biggest errors were at #12 when I didn't see the uncrossable fence (~20secs) and not reading description for 16, therefore picked a complex route choice to the top of the wall when it was actually at the bottom, which would've meant a much faster route choice anyway! Overall disappointed with the way my body let me down today, just faded way to quickly and couldn't keep up speed. Ended up a lowly 11th, 3:31 off the pace.
