Cracker Middle Distance Final. Happy to Minna to get another win, and the Men's race was so exciting it didn't really matter who won but a Norwegian made it a great atmosphere.

We had all planned to run the A1 4.8km course but when we got to the start they were short on maps so rather than wait we just ran 3.9km A2. 1min start intervals mixed in with the Finnish team. I had to concentrate at the start to make sure I wasn't caught by the Fincke and Kuuselo. I enjoyed the course but it was pretty unexciting coure setting. I practiced red lining most of the course which wasn't always the fastest, but not too slow either.

Riding back into Trondheim, with a bit of a loop from Granasen to start.
Enjoyed watching the WOC Long Distance Final. Of course I would prefer to be competing, but maybe next year...

WOC Rest day. I spoke to Chris Forne who told me the secret password for the NTNUI boat house so Kathryn and I headed off to try and go for a paddle. It worked out ok and we had two sea kayaks to play in for the afternoon.
First paddled out around Munkholmen, the island a few km's off shore. The wind started to pick up (it had been perfectly flat when we started) so we headed back into the harbour and up the river for a while. Had a short lunch stop and headed back to the boat house. Great way to see the town from a different perspective and fun to go paddling again.

Running 20:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)

morning pre-breakfast jog with Kathryn. Legs feel better than yesterday.
I start the Long Distance Qual at 4.40pm (12.40am AEST). An unusually late start, but good thing I much prefer running in the arvo than morning.
Unfortunately Shep isn't running today so I'm the only Aussie male.

Well the race just didn't go to script. I was mentally ready, navigated reasonably well only missing 3 in the circle. But my legs were pathetic. I honestly can't think of a day where I have run worse in my life. Don't really know what to put it down to but unfortunately it wasn't a good representation of my form or ability. Ah well maybe next time.
thanks to those people who gave their support.
Obviously not a good day for Kathryn either.
write more tomorrow.

Running 40:00 [3] 8.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Nike Air Span +6

morning pre-breakfast run with Kathryn. From the apartment, past the Dahls Brewery, and onto a walking/cycling track around the waterfront. Really nice track, but hillier than expected. Legs felt a bit tired from yesterday but Physio Victoria is doing a good job of looking after them.

Watch the Middle Distance Qual in the arvo. Very technical courses and the spread of times was larger than I expected. Shattered for Julian not making the final.

It was a long run down from the warm up and -12mjn pre start to the -3min start. You could hear the commentary getting louder so I prepared myself for a spectator friendly start. Finally we made it to the start and there was a short run to the start triangle where Hubmann, who started with me went straight ahead. It took a lot mental energy to ignore him and turn hard left run up the track and found the first control on a small side path. I heard my name called plenty of times so I expected there must be spectators throughout the course.
The 2nd leg had a bit of route choice and headed left rather than climbing I've over the hill. I stayed on the path too long and lost a bit of time by going back around the right of the building. I saw Hubmann again but was punching different controls so I again refocussed on my own course. The next 3 were fairly easy and I was starting to settle in. On the longer leg to 6 I started to relax a little and took a few deep breaths. 6-11 were short and complex thru some old buildings which involved a few legs thru open doorways which were tricky.
Despite it being an obvious feature of the old map, I failed to plan my excite thru the impassable fence but recovered before loosing much time. I felt tired running up the hill into the forest and was passed by Russian Tsvetkov. I left the track heading to 12 and just misjudged the distance- an obvious mistake of limited training at this scale. I watched the Russian punch a control but I tried to run past it and had a big stop before checking the control and finding it was mine.
13 was a short downhill leg and I saw the Russian leaving the control but I was too messy for the nest few that involved dangerous labyrinths of small trails. On retrospect I think I missed an easy alternative to 15 on the road to the left.
16 to 22 were quite straight forward and I just lacked the required running speed. I was relieved to get the last control and make it to the finish.

Running 25:00 [3] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

morning run with Kathryn from the new apartment down through the harbour, station and back again. The legs felt much better, probably benefiting from an easy day out of the forest yesterday.
Another cracker day in Trondheim.
