Race Evaluation

US Middle Course Championships: Red

Tundra/Desert

1. My route will be posted here.
2. Twisted the bad ankle slightly. Not a big problem. More of a rude stretch than an injury.
3.
4. Saw Dave Yee on this leg.
5. Passed Dave Yee on this leg.
6.
7. Twisted my ankle on this leg again. This time, it was a lot more painful. I slowed down for a couple minutes, then sped up at the end of this leg. The pain persisted until the end of the race, so that even if the tibial pain returned at some point, the ankle hurt a lot more so I don't remember much of the former. NOTE: The SI clock on Control 7 was about 1 minute 40 too fast, leading also to an increased time in the SI results for the next leg. This split is from my watch, and the next one is adjusted to equal the SI total for 6–8.
8. Confused parallel features

I ran to the one reentrant immeidately to the W of the control, the control was not there and someone was looking for it there. I had a hunch it would be to the E, but thought I'd be 100% proof and checked out two to the W first. As soon as I was sure where I was, based on the angle of the reentrant, I turned around and went back to the correct reentrant.

11. Bad distance judgement
Lacked confidence
+01:35
I had a suspicion this one woud be tough, so took it slowly and at all times knew where I was. As I got to the correct reentrant, I looked down and saw no control. I then thought I was passing the reentrant situation just to the E, so went along and dipped into the reentrant two to the W. Someone (Carl Moore?) was in it, just a couple meters short of the control. I went to the control; not mine. I remembered instantly the nice wandering time I had in this very area two years ago, in slightly less lit conditions, and knew I had passed the correct reentrant. I went back one, took the right fork, and there it was. I would not call the control's location exactly the upper part of the reentrant. More like a couple trees below the upper part, behind one of those two trees as viewed from the optimal approach direction.
12. Passed Carl Moore again. It was not easy.
