Lunacy triumphs over logic in this wacky competition which requires participants to complete two lengths of a 55m (60 yard) trench cut through a peat bog in the quickest possible time. Conventional swimming strokes are barred, snorkels and flippers are mandatory, wet suits optional but advisable. Competitors come from all over the British Isles and many from Europe, Australia and America, lending an international flavour to this soggy but scenic annual event among the mountains of mid-Wales. Competitions in mens, ladies and junior categories attract upwards of 150 entrants. In the month before the World Bog Snorkelling championship there are Bike Bog Snorkelling and Bog Triathlon events, held in the same bog.
