orienteering race 1:15:07 [4] *** 6.4 km (11:44 / km)
spiked:12/17c

Excellent day and excellent run early, but then got tired and lost concentration. Several loose controls, especially #7 where I undid all the good that I had done until that point. In retrospect, I think I probably ran too hard early, as I was clearly struggling with my conditioning well before the halfway point. Towards the end, I was chagrined to see Charlie DeWeese punching the penultimate control right after me. At first I hoped that he had chosen to run Green (he didn't). Then I hoped to outrun him to the finish (I couldn't). Finally I tried to take him out at the knees when I stumbled crossing the finish line a half-stride behind. Fortunately, I missed, but I think I did provide an impressive spectacle for Peter Goodwin and the Walkers, and thankfully without any signficant injury. Congrats to Charlie on an excellent race and to Peter for setting a very enjoyable course.

As an aside, I have now travelled to and from Kent by three different routes, and I have yet to find any of them acceptable. It is undeniably a long haul from Boston for a local event, but it was good training for events later this Spring, and it also allowed me to take full advantage of one of the few Sundays when I was not scheduled to work overnight.

Trail walk warm up/down (Dog walk) 30:00 [1] 1.4 mi (21:26 / mi)

Out with son and dogs. Good warm-up for run.

Road run 21:59 [5] 3.0 mi (7:20 / mi)

Was planning 6.8 mile loop, but co-opted by daughter for gardening, so shortened route to 3.0 loop. Weather perfect, so went out with plan to try for PR. Fell 10 seconds short, but not a bad effort given my limited training.

Trail run (Dog walk) 45:00 [2] 2.3 mi (19:34 / mi)

Short loop in Needham Town Forest, done as glorified jog in place to accommodate Sydney.

Thursday Apr 24, 2008 #

Road run 52:33 [3] 6.8 mi (7:44 / mi)

Extended Charles River run. Trying to build up endurance. Warm but not overly humid.

orienteering race 23:46 [4] *** 3.1 km (7:40 / km) +90m 6:42 / km
spiked:11/13c

CSU Sprint Series, Menotomy Rocks. Sobering experience after running cleanly to #4, then being caught by Ian Finlayson. Missed #10, in retrospect probably due to missing NS trail and hitting trail heading NNW, then making parallel error regarding knoll at top of rise. Solid effort, but still forced to walk hills twice, even in sprint.

orienteering race 1:02:26 [4] 6.85 km (9:07 / km)
spiked:8/11c

Local Meet on my home terrain. Nice to be able to compete rather than set courses for a change. Ran early to let me take daughter to riding lessons later on. Solid if not spectacular run. Legs 4-5 and 5-6 quite similar to legs I set (although in reverse for 5-6) in recent events.
